4 First aid measures (...) Ingestion Inhalation General - Do not induce vomiting - Rinse mouth with water (do not swallow) - Remove patient to fresh air - Keep warm and at rest Notes to Physicians - Early symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, increased salivation, watery eyes, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, cold sweat, headache, dizziness, disturbed hearing and vision, agitation, high blood pressure, confusion and weakness. Late symptoms of overdose include fainting, drop in blood pressure, difficult breathing, weak, rapid or irregular pulse, lethargy, convulsions and coma. Death may occur from paralysis of respiratory muscles. Treatment should be symptomatic and supportive, in particular the respiratory system and cardiovascular systems. Ventilation & inotropic support may be necessary in the short term until the nicotine is absorbed. Nicotine is usually metabolised 1-2 hours. Gastric lavage if ingestion <4 hours. If > 4 hours, use cathartic, e.g. Magnesium Sulphate. Diazepam to control convulsions. 5 Fire-fighting measures - In case of fire use water, carbon dioxide or dry agent (S43) - May form explosive dust/air mixtures - Substance evolves toxic fumes, wear self-contained breathing apparatus 6 Accidental release measures Personal Precautions - Avoid raising dust Environmental Precautions - Use appropriate containment to avoid environmental contamination (S57) - Do not allow to enter public sewers and watercourses - If contamination of drainage systems or water courses is unavoidable, immediately inform appropriate authorities Clean Up Actions - Avoid raising dust - Sweep or shovel-up spillage and remove to a safe place - Place in appropriate container for disposal 7 Handling and storage Handling - Do not allow dust to accumulate on surfaces and equipment - When using do not eat, drink or smoke (S20/21) - Avoid contact with skin and eyes (S24/25) - Do not breathe dust (S22) - Keep away from food, drink and animal feedingstuffs (S13) - Wash hands thoroughly after using this substance Revision: 10/09/2008 2
