We are fortunate to live in an area with a stable economy, one that includes some of the wealthiest counties in the country. Yet today, many of our neighbors remain in desperate need of services, with many more just one paycheck away from financial disaster. At United Way of the National Capital Area, we believe that by building stronger, healthier, more financially stable individuals and families, together we create a better life for everyone. There are plenty of reasons for all of us to give back to our communities. But another reason to do good is that it feels good. Joining hands to help your neighbors makes you a part of something bigger than yourself. It makes you an important part of a living thriving community. A community we all share.

Join hands with us along with our more than 730 member nonprofit organizations in dedicating your time and resources to support the common good. No matter the differences in our backgrounds, our perspectives or our politics, we can work together to make our community a better place. That s what it means to

Community Impact. United Way NCA is committed to creating real change measurable improvements to the day-to-day lives of tens of thousands of people in need. By focusing our efforts and those of our member nonprofit organizations on the three key building blocks crucial for creating a better life, we provide you with the most effective available means for taking positive action. What Is The New United Way NCA? United Way NCA has been serving communities within the national capital area for more than 35 years. That makes us among the most established charitable institutions in the region. But we are not sitting still. As the area changes, we are committed to being a dynamic organization, convening and collaborating throughout the region to make the greatest possible impact on our communities. Where others might see difficulties, we see an opportunity to serve. Even as more and more communities in our area find 2 JOIN HANDS TO LIVE UNITED / www.unitedwaynca.org

For The Good of All: In the past five years United Way of the National Capital Area distributed $142 million to advance the common good in the greater Washington area. Last year, 228 grants totaling $1.65 million were awarded to programs focused on helping children and youth succeed, improving health and wellness as well as strengthening and supporting families throughout the Washington metropolitan area. themselves divided by geography, economy and income we act as a unifying force capable of bringing these divergent groups together in support of the common good. At United Way NCA, we truly believe we can accomplish our mission of helping all our neighbors to have better lives. For the most disadvantaged among us, that means providing basic needs with a focus on the three building blocks of a quality life education, financial stability and good health. For those of us more fortunate, we offer the opportunity to help improve the well-being of all. Discover how good it feels to do good. That s the power of Living United. united way of the national capital area 3

Teaching Learning Problem: Research shows low-income students lose about two months of achievement in reading during the summer, while their middle-class counterparts actually make gains. Solution: To help ensure low-income students don t lag behind their counterparts, United Way NCA distributed more than 10,000 backpacks filled with books to low-income children and resources for their parents, including tips on how to make reading more interesting and fun to keep kids reading all summer long. 4 JOIN HANDS TO LIVE UNITED / www.unitedwaynca.org

Education Every year, more than 1 million students drop out of high school that s 6,000 every day. Today, only one in four fourth graders is proficient in reading. Students who lag behind in reading by fourth grade are more likely than their peers to drop out of high school, to be unemployed or underemployed and to end up on welfare or in prison. The solution? Supportive communities. Effective schools. Strong families. Literacy for all. Time and again, studies identify these as the keys to individual success through education. We believe that every child can learn, regardless of his or her circumstances, and that United Way NCA can provide the most efficient vehicle for helping to make that happen. Effective education is not defined by a single moment in time. United Way NCA views education from literacy preparedness through work and life readiness as the cornerstone of individual and community success. Our education strategy aims to ensure that: All children are ready for kindergarten; Each child is able to read at grade-level by grade 4; All students transition successfully into and out of middle school; Students graduate high school prepared for success in work and/or post-secondary education. By working with our member nonprofit organizations, United Way NCA will support best practices that promote strategies for success. Together, we will help put our children well on the road to lifelong achievement and a strong community for all. united way of the national capital area 5

working caring Problem: Nearly 12,000 people in the Washington metropolitan area are homeless. The primary cause of homelessness is lack of affordable housing. Solution: We provided financial support for initiatives that helped residents file nearly 9,784 tax returns, with the Earned Income Tax Credit Program (EITC), securing more than $5,485,594 million in EITC refunds and more than $14,130,020 in federal refunds. 6 JOIN HANDS TO LIVE UNITED / www.unitedwaynca.org

Financial Stability Without the ability to provide for one s household, to pay the rent or to plan for the future, a family may well find it impossible to achieve any sense of security, let alone to take the steps necessary to create a better life. Unfortunately, many families in our area live paycheck to paycheck, and slip further and further into debt, leaving them ever more vulnerable to financial crisis. That s why United Way NCA works to eliminate homelessness and increase the number of financially stable individuals and families by: Providing support to help residents find and maintain safe, affordable housing; Connecting the mentally and physically disabled, as well as victims of domestic violence with relocation supports and services; Promoting opportunities for occupational training and development; Connecting working families and individuals with targeted financial education on budgeting, spending, credit and tax preparation. united way of the national capital area 7

healing stronger Problem: More than 10 percent of adults in the Washington metropolitan area lack health insurance. Solution: United Way NCA has partnered with FamilyWize to provide area residents with discount prescription cards. Many United Way NCA member nonprofit organizations have joined in this effort and have already saved area residents nearly $2.5 million in prescription costs. 8 JOIN HANDS TO LIVE UNITED / www.unitedwaynca.org

Health Research shows that fit and active children have higher selfesteem and fewer health problems. Healthy adults are more productive and lead longer, fuller lives. Our goal at United Way NCA is to increase the numbers of healthy children, young people and adults in our community. Working hand-in-hand with member nonprofit organizations who run programs, deliver services and share our mission of improving lives, we focus on: Improving access to health care including health screenings and affordable medications within underserved communities; Promoting greater awareness and availability within neighborhoods, schools and workplaces of proper nutrition and healthy physical activities. Learn more about our Fun, Fly & Fit after-school program by visiting, www.unitedwaynca.org; Providing safe and productive alternatives to violence and risk-taking behavior for people within our communities. united way of the national capital area 9

Helping Nourishing Basic Needs Crisis, hunger and homelessness can happen anytime to virtually anyone. At United Way NCA, connecting people in need with local resources and assistance when they need them is a critical part of our mission. United Way NCA s 2-1-1 initiative is a powerful tool available to individuals and families for addressing needs in real time. A free, easy-to-remember non-emergency telephone number connects people to vital health services and human resources that can improve lives. The 2-1-1 call specialists are waiting 24 hours a day, seven days a week to provide information about the full range of available community services. Problem: The poverty rate in the Washington metropolitan area is 21 percent. Solution: In the past year, 2-1-1 has answered approximately 632,000 calls from residents of the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia seeking services including health care, basic needs, utility assistance, mortgage foreclosure prevention and much more. 10 JOIN HANDS TO LIVE UNITED / www.unitedwaynca.org

Joining Regions We Serve To accomplish our mission, United Way NCA depends on the passion and commitment of caring individuals throughout the community. As we set goals and take action, we rely heavily on the support of Regional Councils in each of the eight communities we serve. Alexandria Arlington District of Columbia Fairfax/Falls Church Loudoun Montgomery Prince George s Prince William Because Regional Council members are active members of their community, they are able to provide United Way NCA with crucial insight into the unique needs of their regions. With this in mind, a representative from each of the Regional Councils sits on the United Way NCA Board of Directors, ensuring that each jurisdiction is powerfully represented in our leadership. united way of the national capital area 11
