We are excited to aouce that we have several searches o the way to add faculty ad istructors to our program. We appreciate the support of our alumi ad commuity parters who help our faculty ad staff to ope a world of learig, discovery ad service to our remarkable studets. Thak you! School of Social Work Updates Educatio Abroad: Drs. Iraida V. Carrio ad Maisha Joshi, alog with 17 studets, participated i A Comparative Study of Socio-Cultural Cotext of People s Health i Barceloa ad Alicate. ASWB Pass Rate: The USF School of Social Work first-time pass rate for cadidates for social work licesure takig the Cliical Associatio of Social Work Boards (ASWB) examiatios cotiues to be higher tha the atioal average first time pass rate. Global Pathways: The BSW Program was accepted as part of the iaugural cohort of udergraduate degree programs pursuig the Global Pathway desigatio. The Global Pathway desigatio will provide curricular ad co-curricular opportuities for BSW studets to lear ad practice global competecies ad eable studets to make progress toward a Global Citize Award. Studet Scholarship Fud: The School of Social Work established a ew Social Work Studet Scholarship fud ad raised more tha $14,000 durig the 40th Aiversary School of Social Work breakfast celebratio. A special thak you to our alumi, commuity parters, faculty, staff ad studets that helped make this possible. Emeritus: Dr. Mario Becker, Professor, was awarded Emeritus Status. She retired i August 2017. Dr. Alicia Stiso-Medoza was amed Associate Director of the School of Social Work. Dr. Stiso-Medoza also serves as the MSW Program Chair.

They preseted o the beefits of the service-learig coectio betwee a social work udergraduate course ad the traiig studets experieced by voluteerig at the USF BRIDGE (Buildig Relatioships ad Iitiatives Dedicated to Gaiig Equality) Healthcare Cliic. The service-learig aspect of this course provided studets with a authetic coectio of theory to practice ad icreased their uderstadig ad isight by participatig o a multidiscipliary team with studets from medicie, public health, physical therapy ad pharmacy. The Social Work Society, guided by Faculty Advisor Lori Rogovi, MSW, ACSW, orgaized several evets this year icludig a Valetie s Day Bake Sale, Body Image ad Acceptace Educatioal Sessio ad a Uderwear Drive to beefit Digity U Wear i Jacksoville, FL. Uder the guidace ad directio of faculty advisor, Dr. Chris Simmos, our studets completed 975 voluteer hours, saw 160 patiets ad provided over 150 commuity resources through the o-campus studet-ru free cliic, BRIDGE. The studets received 72 hours of supervisio from LCSW faculty at the cliic. Shawa Machado, a recet graduate of the MSW Program at USF Sarasota-Maatee, was the recipiet of the Natioal Associatio of Social Workers Social Work Studet of the Year Award for the state of Florida. Ae Bjoerke, a recet MSW graduate, worked with Dr. Aliso Salloum o a study titled Complicated grief, depressio, posttraumatic growth ad hope amog bereaved youth, which was accepted for publicatio i OMEGA: Joural of Death ad Dyig. Ae was also a co-author o a poster presetatio related to this study preseted at the Society for Social Work ad Research i New Orleas, LA. Lori Rogovi, MSW, ACSW, led a ethusiastic group of eighty BSW ad MSW studets i a 2-day service learig experiece i Tallahassee for the 2017 Legislative Educatio ad Advocacy Day coordiated by the Florida Chapter of the Natioal Associatio of Social Workers. Hudreds of social work studets ad faculty members across Florida participated i this advocacy opportuity to educate elected officials o issues importat to social workers ad the cliets they serve. Amada Molé, a recet MSW graduate, preseted at the USF 9th Aual Research Symposium. Her poster presetatio, The Effect Cythia Horwitz, a recet MSW graduate, preseted her research o Ifat Metal Health (IMH) Uitig Grat at the USF Health Research Day ad USF Graduate Research Day. The Ifat Metal Health (IMH) Uitig Grat is a comprehesive effort to improve metal health for childre ages 0-3 i Hillsborough Couty by stregtheig ad expadig the IMH system of care through icreased iteragecy collaboratio, improved services, ad more effective referrals. Alumi Cythia Caales, MSW, was selected to preset at the Natioal Ceter for Creative Agig 2016 The Creative Age: Global Perspectives o Creativity ad Agig Coferece. Cythia completed her field placemet with the Alzheimer s Associatio- Florida Gulf Coast Chapter. Durig her time there, she worked o the Timeless Tues project (www.timelesstues.org). This project seeks to implemet the therapeutic power of music i the treatmet of people with demetia. After a aoymous geerous doatio of MPS players Cythia ad her colleagues were able to give MP3 players that are loaded with culturally appropriate music to families ad Nursig Homes throughout the couties served by the Alzheimer s Associatio-Florida Gulf Coast Chapter. SPOTLIGHTS Quicy Clowe, MSW, was selected from hudreds of applicats to serve i the Peace Corps Youth i Developmet Program i Thailad. As part of her service, Quicy is tasked with workig with youth (ages 11-15) withi a rural remote commuity i Thailad. Quicy is workig to empower the youth i the commuity to become healthy egaged adults through promotio of educatio, leadership ad coectios with the adult commuity. Faculty Nicole McCutcha, MSW, received a Social Work Rural ad Uderserved Iter-professioal Postgraduate Fellowship. She worked for the past year at the Joit Ambulatory Care Ceter i Pesacola (which is a commuity-based outpatiet cliic withi the Gulf Coast Veteras Health Care System); she provided couselig 3 days a week, atteded semiars oe day a week, ad was egaged i research oe day a week. Larry Cooper, LCSW, was amed Social Worker of the Year by the Natioal Associatio of Social Workers Tampa Bay Uit. Larry also has served as a Adjuct Faculty member this past year. Larry was recetly promoted to Chief of Prevetio ad Itervetio Services at The Childre s Home, Ic. Field Kathy Fabbri ad George Paulose were amed USF Field Istructors of the Year. Kathy Fabbri works at Success for Kids ad Families. George Paulose works at Hillsborough Couty Departmet of Agig Services. Dr. Iraida V. Carrio ad the Hispaic Services Coucil Commuity-Uiversity LEER (which meas to read i Spaish) Collaborative Project, is a ewly-fuded project i CBCS by the Sociological Foudatio Iitiative. It bega this summer i the North Tampa ad Wimauma commuities. Prior to school edig, the team carefully purchased culturally-relevat, ageappropriate biligual books for childre ad their parets. Throughout the summer, commuity paret leaders egaged childre ad parets i a discussio regardig the previous week s book while also reviewig vocabulary words ad itroducig the upcomig book for the week. Dr. Guitele Rahill provided metorig support to Haiti-based social service orgaizatio OREZON (Orgaizatio for the Reovatio ad Educatio of the Cite Soleil Zoe) with the outcome that they received a $8000.00 grat from Geohazards Iteratioal (GHI). She advised, traied ad served as cosultat both to GHI ad OREZON persoel. As part of this effort, she taught OREZON how to revise their resumes ito biosketches ad icluded i their biosketches their cotributios to her previous work. These efforts stregtheed their applicatio ad they were able to obtai the grat. Dr. Guitele Rahill worked with OREZON admiistrators post-award to prepare their deliverables. Lori Rogovi was elected Vice-Presidet ad Teri Simpso was re-elected to serve as Secretary of the Florida Field Educatio Cosortium. Alicia Stiso-Medoza, Ph.D., LCSW, was awarded the Natioal Associatio of Social Workers Tampa Bay Uit Educator of the Year Award. Dr. Rahill did a presetatio at Tampa Geeral Hospital etitled, Picuriste (Ijectioist) Practice amog Haitia Immigrats: Implicatio for Research ad Itervetio. Professor Lori Rogovi was selected by the Natioal Associatio of Baccalaureate Social Work Program Directors (BPD) to serve o its Field Committee. Dr. Maisha Joshi ad her Graduate Assistat Amy Brow were ivited by the Itimate Parter Violece Coordiator for the Veteras Affairs Medical Ceter i Loma Lida, CA to provide feedback o a pilot project (Itimate Parter Violece Outreach website) that the VA Ceter is developig. They reached out to Dr. Maisha Joshi ad Amy Brow as a result of readig their publicatio Itimate Parter Violece Amog Female Service Members ad Veteras: Iformatio ad Resources Available Through Military ad No-Military Websites. Lori Rogovi, MSW, ACSW, was selected to participate i the USF Service-Learig Boot Camp i May. The program was a itesive iteractive class focusig o the philosophy, goals, ad best practices of service learig, alog with the experiece of developig a service-learig syllabus i the participats respective programs. Dr. Chris Simmos was a ad hoc reviewer for the Cliical Supervisor ad Families I Society. The School of Social Work Faculty ad Staff sposored a Self-Care Week to provide studets various opportuities to take a break ad istill the importace of self-care ito their practice. Dr. Guitele Rahill traveled to Haiti to cotiue layig the foudatio for OREZON members to establish a cliic that will be a site for medicatio disbursemet. The cliic will avail access to HIV medicatios ad medicatios to treat opportuistic ifectios for Cité Soleil residets who are HIV reactive ad who live i a resourcecostraied but high HIV prevalece area. A big part of that effort was parterig with logstadig parters at OREZON (Joh Wesley Placide ad Paul Phycie) ad with ew parters at USAID ad Chemoics, to coduct a traiig that permitted 10 members of OREZON to obtai their huma subjects protectio certificates from Family Health Iteratioal. The latter traiig was coducted by Prof. Jea Deis Lys of the Uiversité d Etat d Haiti, who is a S.H.A.R.E. Haiti Scholar. Dr. Maisha Joshi was awarded the Global Citizeship Fellowship for Sprig 2017 to covert the udergraduate level - Itroductio to Social Work course ito a Global Citizeship Project certified course. Recet MSW graduate, JJ Beggs, worked with Dr. Simmos ad Iovative Educatio to covert SOW 6931 Cogitive Behavior Therapy to a olie format. Dr. Rahill ad Dr. Joshi are ow the proud recipiets of the first pilot grat fuded by the CBCS HIV RIG Special Fudig Opportuity. The proposal targets female victims of oparter sexual violece i Haiti s Cité Soleil, who are at high risk for HIV. Buildig o log-term egagemet with parters at OREZON, they will assess the feasibility ad acceptability of adaptig a evidece-based itervetio for HIV called RESPECT, pairig it with OraQuick, a RAPID HIV test. Amog the primary objectives are to ehace victims awareess of risk, offer a RAPID HIV test to scree for atibodies, ad provide risk reductio couselig i order to reduce the risk of School of Social Work Social Work News Fall 2017 5

If successful, Dr. Joshi ad Dr. Rahill will produce a Haitia Kreyól draft of RESPECT that will avail HIV prevetio ad testig ad risk reductio couselig to a at-risk populatio with limited HIV testig resources, ad who live i a eighborhood that is disproportioately impacted by o-parter sexual violece, i a coutry with a high HIV prevalece.
