PORTAGE LAKES KIWANIS February 5 th, 2014 THE COMMUNICATOR District Euchre Tournament INSIDE THIS ISSUE: District Euchre Tournament 1 Presidents Day Dinner 2 Acme Receipts 3 Kiwanis Family Birthday s, Anniversaries Club & Personal 3 Dates to Remember 3 Key Clubs 3 What can you do to help? 4 Special points of interest: Back in October at the District 20 meeting hosted by Downtown Akron Kiwanis Club the decision was made to hold a Euchre Tournament. All monies collected would be donated to Kiwanis International Project Eliminate Fund. With the holidays right around the corner the decision was made to hold this in February of 2014. The tournament would be held at the Portage Lakes Kiwanis Civic Center. And all clubs involved would try to secure baskets for the Silent Auction as well as individuals to participate in the Euchre Tournament. Tickets were sold at $ 30.00 per couple and $ 15.00 per individual. Individuals not worry we would find you a partner all you had to do was get yourself to the event. Last Saturday night February 1 st, 2014, There was a gathering of individual District 20 Kiwanis groups at the Civic Center on Portage Lakes Dr. It is estimated that there were approximately 32 people in attendance from several different Kiwanis Clubs. Kent, Stow, Barberton, Medina, Downtown Akron and Portage Lakes and joined together for a fun evening of cards, food, a Silent Auction and 50/50 raffle. The Silent Auction Items went quickly and the 50/50 raffle was won by our own Sue Harding. Each group was assigned a Kerri Gleisinger for the deserts number from 1 t0 16 and 8 round and cup cakes. tables were set up around the room. If you and your partner were assigned an even number We are looking forward to you would get up after each hosting another Euchre game an move on to the next Tournament sometime in the table. All couples kept score, near future and hope that more and noted whether they won or clubs and their members will lost the game prior to leaving to attend. go to the next table. Each groups score totals whether they won or lost the game were tallied on a board at the side of the room until the end of the evening. It didn t matter whether you won or lost the match it was your total score at the end of the evening that determined the winner of the night. We would like to Thank all who helped make this evening a success from Stow members to District members and our own Vicki Kepnes and Al Grzeschik for supplying the appetizers and drinks for the evening. And Portage Lakes Kiwanis Member WHAT S HAPPENING WITH OUR KEY CLUBS Upcoming events Valentines Candy Magic City Kiwanis It is almost Valentines Day and Magic City Kiwanis is selling Valentines Chocolates for $ 15.00 small and $ 25.00 for the large hearts. page 2 The Communicator cont d Acme Receipts For several years now we have collected Acme receipts from wherever we can. Starting on or around September 21 st through February 5 th each year on the bottom of your Acme receipt you will notice a section for community cash back During the above mentioned times when this section shows a dollar amount Portage Lakes Kiwanis collects the receipts, provides a total amount and once $ 1,500.00 in community cash back dollars has been received they are sent in and Portage Lakes Kiwanis receives a certain portion of that money. Kiwanis in return filters this money through community events or donations back into the Portage Lakes Community. As yesterday February 5 th, 2014 was the last day for the Community Cash Back Program we are asking that every receipt you or a neighbor or friend might have be turned into Vicki Kepnes so she can finalize her totals and send everything in. Remember to check all your receipts even dated back to September or October they can still be turned in. Thank you everyone for helping with this project and a Thanks to Vicki for running the project. Presidents Dinner In just a few short weeks we will be hosting the President s Dinner this dinner is put on by Portage Lakes Kiwanis to show support for our fellow Non Profit Organizations in the Portage Lakes Area. This will be the 4 th year for this event. To date we have approximately 38 people attending. We are in the process of finalizing the dinner reservations so if you would like to attend please contact the Civic Center to place your reservation. President s Day Dinner February 19 th, 2014 6:30 pm Civic Center 725 Portage Lakes Dr. The evening will consist of Dinner cost $ 10.00 each. Fellowship and a time to hear a brief summary of some of the local organizations and what they do. After the meeting should you have any questions or just want more information on a specific organization there will be a time where you can talk to the President s and find out more about them. Possibly commit to an organization that may be searching for volunteer s. It s a terrific way to learn more about your community and the things going on within that community. Bring a friend, a cousin or other family member and join us for a few hours. If interested please contact the Civic Center to place your reservation for the evening. KIWANIS FAMILY Please keep the following members and their families in your thoughts and prayers as they go through some trying times over the next several months: Scott Shookman - Scott s surgery was on Tuesday and all went well. As of this evening he was in recovery and had a terrific attitude. Scott will spend approximately 10 14 days in the hospital before being sent home. Prior to his surgery he spent some time in Florida with family, until daughter Sarah went to Russia to cover the Olympics and was still running 3 miles per day as well as doing 100 pushups a day. Yesterday he was up walking 3 times and today will be moved to a regular room. When he returns home he will be in the wonderful care of his wife and daughter. Our prayers for a speed recovery are with you and the family Scott. Judy Hunter - Judy had Chemo treatment on Tuesday but it is reported by husband Larry Hunter that other than being a little tired Judy was doing well and felling pretty will also. Judy our thoughts and prayers are with you also. Bob Denglier - We have not had any recent updates on Bob but we pray that all is going well for himself and wife Helga. Keeping you in our daily prayers.
