Make Time for Tea The Official Tea Partner for Make Time for Tea Fundraising Guide

TEA FACTS: Legend has it that Earl Grey tea was created for the 2nd Earl Grey as a reward for saving a Chinese mandarin s son 2

I m delighted to spearhead the charity s Make Time for Tea campaign for Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month in March. Getting involved with Make Time for Tea is great fun! It is the perfect opportunity to get together with friends, family or colleagues, enjoy some tea and cake and raise much-needed funds for and awareness of ovarian cancer. Ovarian cancer is the sixth most common cancer amongst women in the UK with around 7,400 women diagnosed each year and sadly 11 women die every day The Eve Appeal is determined to change these shocking statistics, and needs your help. So whether your tea party (or bake sale they count too!) is big or small, your support can help to make a difference to the women of the future. Put the kettle on, dust off the cake mixers, hang up the bunting and Make Time for Tea! Lorraine x 3

What You Should Know about Ovarian Cancer Ovarian cancer is the sixth most common cancer amongst women in the UK, with around 7,400 women diagnosed each year. That s 20 mothers, daughters, sisters, wives or partners every day. We know that early diagnosis is key to saving women s lives. If ovarian cancer symptoms are caught and the cancer is diagnosed at an early stage, the outcome is more positive. 90% of women with ovarian cancer will survive their disease for five years or more if diagnosed at the earliest stage, compared with less than 5% if diagnosed at the latest stage. 1 We want to ensure that both women and men understand the key signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer and feel confident talking to friends, family and especially their GP. There are three main ovarian cancer symptoms, they are: Increased abdominal size and persistent bloating (not just bloating that comes and goes) Persistent pelvic and abdominal pain Difficulty eating and feeling full quickly, or feeling nauseous If you regularly experience any of these symptoms it is important to see your GP. It may not be anything serious, but it is important to get checked out. If you have any questions, feel free to contact our Ask Eve service and talk to a nurse specialist by calling our Freephone number 0808 802 0019 or by emailing nurse@eveappeal.org.uk 1. Our Research into Gynae Cancers The research we fund aims to develop effective methods of risk prediction, early detection and screening for gynaecological cancers. The world-leading research that we fund is ambitious and challenging. Our projects include: PROMISE The Predicting Risk of Ovarian Malignancy, Improved Screening and Early detection (PROMISE) feasibility study aims to evaluate the possibility of offering all women the opportunity to find out their risk of developing ovarian cancer. The study will evaluate the use of early detection and preventative options for women identified to be at increased risk. It is hoped that this approach will improve outcomes or prevent women from developing ovarian cancer. FORECEE A 4-year European-wide research programme that aims to develop a screening process to prevent four female cancers (breast, ovarian, cervical and womb) and save significantly more women s lives. The ambition is that by 2020 we will have developed a single risk model; one test for four cancers. By supporting our Make Time for Tea campaign you will help to ensure that we can continue funding our groundbreaking research programmes and other work. To find out more about the research that we fund please visit www.eveappeal.org.uk/research TEA FACTS: If you believe that dreams have meanings, you ll be pleased to know that dreaming about tea is thought to be a sign of satisfaction 5

My Story I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2002 and was told by the consultant that the best option for me would be a full hysterectomy followed by a six month course of chemotherapy to remove any more signs of the cancer. I went home feeling numb. My family feared the worst and I felt so guilty about all the pain and anguish I was putting each of them through. My mum was my rock, she came with me to all my chemo sessions, and she was there when I was so sick that everything was a tremendous struggle. She was there for every blood test and every appointment with the consultant and she was there when I started to lose my hair due to chemo telling me we would get through this. In 2003, we were told that my treatment had worked and I began to rebuild my life. But things took a turn for the worse when my mum was diagnosed with ovarian cancer that same year after experiencing a bloated stomach for some time. I knew that she would have to go through with chemo like I did, I feared the unknown and it felt so much worse knowing that she would have to go through everything I had. After battling cancer for nearly 3 years and thinking she had beaten it in 2006, it came back again later that year and in February 2007 she passed away. By supporting Make Time for Tea I can help to raise much needed funds and awareness of ovarian cancer, because early diagnosis can save lives. I look forward to holding my tea party but I couldn t do this without the wonderful support of my friends and family who help with the baking as well as providing our raffle prizes. Since 2012 we have raised 1,765! Thank you so much for your support and I wish you all the best of luck with your tea party, it is such a great opportunity to get involved! All the best, Theresa 7

A Word from our Partner: Whittard of Chelsea We fully believe that a conversation over a cup of tea can have the power to change lives which is why we re thrilled to be partnering for a second year with The Eve Appeal, and supporting their hugely valuable work funding research into gynaecological cancers. Last year our customers and staff helped to raise over 10,000 for The Eve Appeal. This year we re hoping to raise 16,000 by hosting Make Time for Tea parties in our stores up and down the country, by encouraging donations from customers, through charity sales in our head office and through sales of our caddies. We re pleased to say that for every Tea Discoveries English Rose caddy sold between March and May, we ll continue to donate 2 to The Eve Appeal. And it doesn t end there: the proceeds from every fundraising activity we run in 2018, from bake sales to till donations, will go directly to The Eve Appeal. We also want to thank you for all your support for The Eve Appeal so we re giving you 15% off when you visit us in store or online (you ll find your voucher in this pack). Why not join us at one of our Make Time for Tea parties, or pick out some pretty tableware to host your own? 8

Then award prizes to the top scorers. Tea Tasting Ask your guests for a suggested donation of 3 or 4 to guess what teas they are sipping the person with the most correct guesses wins a prize! A Whittard voucher is included in your pack should you like to use it to purchase the tea for this game.
