getting started getting started Where At home or work, a local venue; pub, school or a shop. Getting permission If you re holding your bake sale on private property then make sure you get permission from the owner. When Set a date and make sure it doesn t clash with meetings at work or any events. What time of day? Afternoon tea time, lunchtime or a morning break at work. Think about when people are getting peckish, or when they want an afternoon drink. Theme your bake Halloween Spooky treats & pumpkin pie Christmas Mince pies, gingerbread men & eggnog Easter Easter nests, hot cross buns & cream egg brownie Or theme your bake around an event, TV show or movie marathon Wimbledon London Fashion Week X Factor Strictly Come Dancing Toy Story Lord of the Rings Keeping clean in the kitchen Check out the Food Standards Agency s tips for staying hygienic and safe in the kitchen; www.food.gov.uk 3

every penny counts why every penny counts Ovarian Cancer Action receives no government support and therefore relies entirely on donations and grants. Every penny donated makes a big difference to our work. Here is an example of what your donations could fund: 7 could buy the nutrients we need to grow the cancer cells needed for our research 25 could support a scientist to use a powerful microscope to compare what a cancer cell looks like before and after chemotherapy helping us to explore how to make chemotherapy treatment more effective. 50 could buy a chemical that stops cancer cells growing helping us to create new drugs to prevent women dying from ovarian cancer. 100 could support scientists to study what causes cancer cells to die helping us identify potential treatments for the future. 1,000 could examine a patient s DNA enabling us to identify genetic mutations associated with ovarian cancer and understand why ovarian cancer happens. 4

handy hints handy tips 1 2 Get 3 Buy 4 Offer 5 Don t It may sound obvious but buy your ingredients in bulk especially if you re planning on a big bake, or hosting a few smaller ones. your friends or family involved they can help you to make a few more cupcakes or cookies. a few paper bags or boxes then your guests can take a couple of cakes away with them! your guests drinks as well as cakes, this can drum up some extra cash. price your cakes, if your guests don t know how much they are, quite often people pay a bit more. Otherwise another idea is to charge an entrance fee charge per head and then your guests can eat as many cakes as they desire. 6 The 7 8 power of social media. Let people know about your event through Facebook and Twitter, as well as word of mouth and posters. If it s a big bake we could even post about it on our Facebook/Twitter/ Flickr. Do any of your friends have allergies? Bake some treats specifically for them, and label your baked goods on the day, so they know what they can and can t eat. Take photographs on the day, we d love to hear and see how your bake event went, and again we can even shout about it on Facebook/Twitter. 5

presentation and finishing touches presentation and finishing touches How to make your cakes look as delicious as they taste! You can buy a decorating kit quite cheaply to get the swirls on your cupcake just right, otherwise you can create a smooth finish with a pallet knife. Try adding some food colouring to your icing, or buy some sprinkles, sweets or chop up some fruit to decorate the top. Buy some eye catching cupcake cases, perhaps theme your event with one colour. We ve supplied you with some bunting to decorate the room, and cake labels, as well as this you could use some table clothes for your surfaces. If you or your friends have cake stands, then they always look lovely. However you can buy large silver platters quite cheaply or you could line wicker baskets with napkins or doilies. If you don t have enough crockery and cutlery, then you could pick up some paper plates, and plastic spoons and forks that you can recycle after use. One of our fundraisers held a Strawberry Tea Party in memory of her sister. This is a wonderful example of how to set out some beautiful cakes! 6

recipe inspiration recipe inspiration There are so many possibilities when it comes to baking, that it s hard to know where to start! fundraising in memory fundraising in memory I cannot stress how moving my family and I found our visit to the Research Centre where we saw my Mother s name and our dedication to her. Gwyneth Strong, Patron Fundraising in Memory Many events are held in memory of a friend or a family member. If you are fundraising in memory of a loved one then we would like to make you aware of our Ovarian Cancer Action Tribute Wall. The Tribute Wall sits at the heart of the Ovarian Cancer Action Research Centre which is based at the Hammersmith Hospital. It is an inspiration to our scientists. Tribute Funds A good way to keep track of the funds you have raised is by setting up a Tribute Fund. This is an online space that can be visited by friends and family who can then continue to leave messages and make donations. It is a lasting way to celebrate the courage and strength of women affected by ovarian cancer. Once a fund holder has raised 1000 in memory of a loved one, we invite them to have their loved one s name inscribed on the Tribute Wall, along with a personal message. If you are fundraising in memory and are interested in having a name displayed on the Tribute Wall, please do contact us and we will keep a record of everything that is raised in their name, whether it is donated by you, or by others. If you would like to set up a Tribute Fund, please visit the following page: http://ovariancanceraction. tributefunds.com/ Alternatively, to discuss this further please contact Amelia on 020 7380 1733 or email Amelia@ovarian.org.uk 10
