FUNDRAISING: GETTING STARTED When you registered for Climb for Cancer, you were automatically sent a link to your very own personal fundraising page. This page will help you on your fundraising journey. STEP 1: The first step (excuse the pun) is to personalise your page. Upload an image of yourself, your team or family members and share your story. Why are you climbing for cancer and raising funds? Are you trying to get fit and this is your ultimate training test? Or is completing the Climb for Cancer stair climb simply something to tick off your bucket list? Share your personal story and journey with your family and friends. Often people will donate more to an event or charity they feel they have a connection with. Here are some useful tools to help you personalise your page. Login to your fundraising page using the details sent to you in your confirmation email. The first thing you will see is My Dashboard. This section provides an overview of all of the ways in which you can personalise your page. You can edit your page, tell your friends about the climb and view your sponsors. STEP 2: Spread the word. Share your fundraising page via Facebook, Twitter or Email. Start with family and friends. These people will know you the best and want to see you succeed so hit them up! Then ask around to your colleagues, clients and suppliers. Sending a few emails and putting up a few posters in the office can go a long way toward helping you reach your goal! Remember all you have to do is Ask! STEP 3: Share your updates and thank your supporters. Update your page often so people know how you are going. Include information on your Climb for Cancer journey, from any training you might be doing, to your fundraising activities and motivations. Make sure you send a big THANK YOU to your supporters and let them know just how much you appreciate their support. Everyone likes to be thanked, and it might just encourage them to donate a second time! 4 Climb for Cancer Handbook 2014
HINTS AND TIPS FOR FUNDRAISERS Promote yourself don t be shy! Shout from the rooftops and let everyone you know what you are doing! Tell your family, friends, colleagues, the milkman even. The Climb for Cancer stair climb is a big challenge and a huge achievement! Why not steal the show and speak at the end of your next staff meeting? Put yourself out there! Contact your neighbours, sports clubs, gym, local shops, former colleagues, old school friends, your hairdresser and business contacts. You can always rely on the kind donations of strangers and acquaintances, so start handing out flyers! SHOUT IT FROM THE ROOFTOPS Change your email signature Consider changing your email signature at work or at home to promote your Climb for Cancer efforts. Don t forget to include a link to your fundraising page. Use social media! Post & tweet! Use your Facebook and Twitter accounts to spread the word! Post weekly updates on your Facebook page and celebrate when you hit a milestone with your training or fundraising. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, utilise them all! Get your company on board Get your company behind your fundraising efforts and ask if they are willing to include something about you on the company website, intranet or in the company newsletter. It s also worth finding out if your company has a donation-matching scheme, where they will match the amount of money an employee raises. This is a great way for companies to participate in charitable events and fundraising. Hold a fundraising event Raffle yourself you can sell tickets for $10 or $20 and offer your services to friends for example you could do housework, mow lawns or tackle a pile of ironing. Never underestimate the power of the sausage sizzle! Bake stalls are always a winner on the weekends. Contact your local shopping centre, mall, or community centre for permission to set up. Garage sales: a great way to clear your house of unwanted items. Morning tea: Set up a morning tea, lunch or afternoon tea at work in exchange for a contribution towards your fundraising goal. Finally ask again! People often need reminding. If you ve asked them once and they haven t donated ask again. They may have simply forgotten and won t begrudge a friendly reminder. THANK YOU FOR JOINING THE FIGHT AGAINST CANCER It s a frightening fact: 1 in 2 Queenslanders will be affected by cancer in their lifetime. Investment in research is the only way we are going to change this statistic. With your help, we can raise $190 000 to fund six important cancer research projects at Mater. CANCER AFFECTS LEE NICOL Bowel cancer patient, age 51 LAYLA HOOPER Ovarian cancer patient, age 19 A cure for cancer would mean an end to the worry for me and many others who have the disease. It would be nice to lead a normal teenage life. You never know when this disease will strike you and how it will turn your normal world upside down. The only way we can combat this disease is through research which is why we need organisations and everyday people to donate so that generations to come will have more advanced medical treatment. MARK FORBES Prostate cancer patient, age 44 ALL OF US I was told at a prostate cancer conference that it can cost up to two billion dollars to get a cancer medication from the research phase onto the shelf, so it means that every dollar donated really counts. 6 Climb for Cancer Handbook 2014
