INTRODUCTION Anaemia is a condition in which an inadequate number of red blood cells or an inadequate amount of hemoglobin impairs blood oxygen transport resulting in reduced physical and mental capacity. Hemoglobin is the red-pigmented protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen to the brain, muscular system, immune system, and other parts of the body. Iron, folic acid, and other vitamins and minerals (micronutrients) are required for the formation of hemoglobin. Nutrition deficiencies are the most common causes for anaemia and iron deficiency anaemia is a major contributor to the global burden of disease. In 2012, the World Health Assembly Resolution 65.6 endorsed Comprehensive implementation plan on maternal, infant and young child nutrition1, which specified six global nutrition targets for 2025. This policy brief covers the second target: a 50% reduction of anaemia in women of reproductive age. The purpose of this policy brief is to increase attention to, investment in, and action for a set of cost effective interventions and policies that can help Member States and their partners in reducing the rates of anaemia among women of reproductive age. Anaemia impairs health and well-being in women and increases the risk of maternal and neonatal adverse outcomes. Anaemia affects half a billion women of reproductive age worldwide. In 2011, 29% (496 million) of non-pregnant women and 38% (32.4 million) of pregnant women aged 15-49 years were anaemic. The prevalence of anaemia was highest in south Asia and central and west Africa. Population group Prevalence of anaemia Percent Population affected Number (millions) Pregnant women 41.8 56 Non-pregnant women 30.2 468 Total population 72 524 SOLUTION It is estimated that more than 40% of pregnant women worldwide are anaemic. At least half of this anaemia burden is assumed to be due to iron deficiency. Pregnant women require additional iron and folic acid to meet their own nutritional needs as well as those of the developing fetus. Deficiencies in iron and folic acid during pregnancy can potentially negatively impact the health of the mother, her pregnancy, as well as fetal development. Evidence has shown that the use of iron and folic acid supplements is associated with a reduced risk of iron deficiency and anaemia in pregnant women.
WHO recommendations Daily oral iron and folic acid supplementation with 30 mg to 60 mg of elemental iron* and 400 µg (0.4 mg) folic acid** is recommended for pregnant women to prevent maternal anaemia, puerperal sepsis, low birth weight, and preterm birth.*** *The equivalent of 60 mg of elemental iron is 300 mg ferrous sulfate heptahydrate, 180 mg ferrous fumarate or 500 mg of ferrous gluconate. ** Folic acid should be commenced as early as possible (ideally before conception) to prevent neural tube defects. *** This recommendation supercedes the previous recommendation found within the WHO guideline Daily iron and folic acid supplementation in pregnant women (2012). My HealthWorks is a culmination of 25 years of research with the objective of giving Holistic Health a strong scientific foundation so that Lifestyle Disorders can be reversed in a duplicatable manner. My HealthWorks has developed a 10gm Sachet which contains Vitamins, Minerals, Ferrous Ascorbate, Iron Folic, Protein, Carbohydrates along with Mustard Greens and Amla (Indian Gooseberry). Mustard Greens has the highest source of naturally occurring Iron. Amla has one of the highest source of Vitamin C. Both these herbals results in achieving a high degree of bioavailability of Iron and Vitamin C. This formulation is unique since it has naturally occurring herbals which complement the Vitamins and Minerals. This formulation would decrease the Gastritis which normally afflicts most of the Iron Supplements in the market. The health benefits of Indian Gooseberry, also known as Amla, can be partially attributed to its high vitamin C content. Amla enhances food absorption, balances stomach acids, fortifies the liver, nourishes the brain and mental functioning, and supports the heart. It also strengthens the lungs, regulates elimination of free radicals, enhances fertility, helps the urinary system, improves skin quality, and promotes healthier hair. This fruit acts as a body coolant, flushes out toxins, increases vitality, aids in vision care, improves muscle tone, and acts as an antioxidant. The mustard greens nutrition profile is packed with fiber, vitamins, minerals and protective phytonutrients, yet because of their slimming calorie count, their nutrition-to-calorie ratio makes them one of the most nutrient-dense and beneficial foods on the planet. These leafy greens are brimming with plant based substances that may help protect you from heart disease, diabetes and even cancer. Like almost all leafy green vegetables, mustard greens contain antioxidants that protect your body from free radical damage. They re also a great source of fiber, which helps to regulate your digestive tract and lower high cholesterol levels.
