It is worth mentioning that our academic year starts in February and ends in December. Chapter activities since last report (June 2009) New Chapter Officers were elected (April 2010). New members were added to our chapter! Nowadays we are 49 members. The number of undergraduate student members has increased. We had monthly meetings between the Executive Committee and other members that collaborate in order to discuss the Chapter activities. We had regular "pizza meetings" with the aim of organizing chapter activities as well as increasing participation of current members (pictures provided below [a]). We had academic meetings and lectures on optics and photonics for students, followed by coffee, snacks and cookies (see pictures below [b]). We organized a three-day activity program for graduate and undergraduate students, young researchers and professors from the whole country (26-28 May 2010). We had 87 attendants to the meeting that took place in Tandil. The first day was spent on two lectures on lasers given by experienced researchers: Dr. H.F Ranea Sandoval and Dr. M. Larotonda. The next day we attended several short lectures related to optics and photonics and its applications to

medical diagnosis. In the evening, the students made oral and poster presentations. The poster session was followed by picada, empanadas y vino ( cold meat and cheese, small meat pies and red wine ). On the last day, experienced researchers from local laboratories promoted their activities in optics. SPIE benefits, activities and career development opportunities were spread in this meeting (EEOF 2010) with optics and photonics students from the whole country (see pictures below). As a result, many people were interested in participating in the chapter activities and are willing to help organizing the next meeting. Even though organizing this event was really hard, it has strengthened the relationship between the chapter members. We think that this meeting was useful to strengthen the bonds between people working in optics, photonics and related areas, particularly students. Students from different parts of the country (and research centers) shared their own experiences during this activity. They shared both academic and non-academic activities. On the one hand, there were lectures, and oral and poster presentations related to their current research. On the other hand, some of them traveled together, shared accommodation in the Campus, meals, and fun. The overall response was very good. The participants were excited about the activities and suggested to repeat the experience in 2011 in Tucumán. We changed our web-site (http://www.optica.df.uba.ar/jofa/jofauba/) In 2009 Mauro Cuevas received an Officer Travel Grant to attend Optics&Photonics2009. In 2010 Ana Luna received an Officer Travel Grant to attend Optics&Photonics2010. Future Chapter Activities: We will continue working to incorporate new members to our chapter and to organize meetings to spread SPIE activities, benefits and career development opportunities. We are going to organize a conference in collaboration with the CIOP UNLP SPIE Student Chapter (EEOF 2011). The meeting will take place in San Miguel de Tucumán - Prov. Tucumán (17-20 May, 2011). We think this is a way of promoting optics and photonics around the country. Some of the lectures and lecturers at the conference will be: Introduction to Metrology. Joaquín Valdes (INTI) - Argentina. Atomic Clocks. Vanderley Bagnato (IFSC-USP) - Brazil. Optical Frequency Combs. Steven Cundiff (JILA-NIST) USA. We and the CIOP UNLP SPIE student chapter are applying for a SPIE Collaborative Conference Grant in order to support part of this event. More Pizza Meetings are going to be organized for the UBA-SPIE Student Chapter members. However, students from other universities will also be invited. We will continue organizing lectures for students throughout the year. We will try to maintain certain periodicity.
