News from Alan Campbell MP February 2017 A message from Alan 2017 has got off to a busy start with lots of activity and events taking place around the constituency. Despite the uncertainty that comes with the Brexit negotiations families and businesses are getting on with their lives. Community News Thanks to everyone who invites me along to see the good work they re doing around the constituency. If there s anything you d like me to see or anything you need advice or support with please don t hesitate to get in touch. Best wishes I was pleased to welcome representatives from local veteran support charity Forward Assist and Salute Brewery to the House of Commons recently after helping to get their beer on sale in parliament. Salute Brewery, based on the Fish Quay and the first of it s kind in the world, offers realistic work experience and employment opportunities to veteran s who can struggle to reintegrate after leaving the services. Whitley Bay Jobcentre set to close I ve been campaigning to save Whitley Bay Jobcentre in light of the government s plan to close 78 Jobcentre across the country including Whitley Bay. It's reckless for the Government to close so many Jobcentres at a time when it is more important than ever to provide support for people looking for work. Claimants from places like Whitley Bay will be forced to travel further to sign on and in many cases will incur increased travel costs which the DWP will not reimburse. Living on benefits, these are costs they cannot and should not have to afford whilst also risking harsh sanctions if people are unable to keep appointments. I m always concerned when services and amenities are taken out of the town. Whitley Bay Jobcentre is also a relatively new building which also raises questions about the cost-effectiveness of the move. Alan pictured outside Whitley Bay Jobcentre with Whitley Bay Cllrs Margaret Hall, John O Shea and Sandra Graham.

New Post Office for Monkseaton Campaigning for better buses I was pleased to go along to the new Post Office in Monkseaton. Based on Cauldwell Lane, it replaces the former site in West Monkseaton and provides extended opening hours for local customers. No Phone Zone Project www.nophonezone.co.uk I joined campaigners from the Tyne and Wear Public Transport Users Group to lobby against Clause 21 of the Bus Service Bill which seeks to ban councils setting up local bus companies. North Tyneside Disability Forum s Variety Show I met with a constituent, Dr Martin Lee, who has been highlighting the issue of young people s phone usage at night, and the possible link with sleep and mental health problems. For further information visit his website. It was a pleasure to go along to the North Tyneside Disability Forum s Annual Variety Show. Thanks to Sue Adams and all the staff and volunteers who work so hard all year round.

Curry Life Awards Fisherman s Heritage Project I recently popped in to Shikara restaurant in Whitley Bay to congratulate them on receiving an award in the recent Curry Life Awards. It s always great to see a local business get national recognition. Congratulations to the North Shields Fisherman s Heritage Project who have raised a massive 32,000 since launching in July. The project is looking to raise 75k for a memorial to local fishermen on the quay. Saturday for Syria Boost for local Credit Union I went along to an event at the Exchange in North Shields which was organised to raise money for the people of Aleppo. It was a fantastic day for a worthy cause. Well done to the organisers and all those who gave their time and donated prizes. I was pleased to be asked to nominate NE First, a local Credit Union for a funding award from Lloyds Bank. I m delighted that NE First has now been awarded 50,000 - enabling it to lend more to its members.

Holocaust Memorial Day Police Officer Safety I signed the Book of Commitment in the House of Commons on Holocaust Memorial Day. We must never forget. I went along to a briefing in Parliament organised by Holly Lynch MP on Police Office safety to campaign for greater availability of spitguards. Contact a Family Awards Whitley Bay Panto! I went along to first ever Contact a Family Awards in Parliament to meet a young constituent, shortlisted for an award. Contact a Family is a charity for families with disabled children. Well done Eva! I enjoyed my visit to the Whitley Bay Pantomime Society s performance of Jack and the Beanstalk. It was the Society s 53rd Annual performance - well done to all those involved!

Record Fun Run! I want to congratulate and thank everyone involved in this year's record breaking run, with almost 900 runners taking part. It was a beautiful morning at the coast and for a very good cause. A special thanks to North Shields Poly Athletics Club who do a great job organising the event. Tynemouth Outdoor Pool Alan pictured with the first woman home, in 18 minutes 40 seconds Coast Road Improvement I recently went on a site visit with Highways England to see work progressing on the A19/ A1058 Coast Road Junction Improvement Scheme. I know that there have been concerns about journey times throughout the roadworks and I sought assurances that the project is on time. The work is due for completion in March 2019 and although the work is inconvenient now when it s finished it will cut down considerably on journey times within the borough. Here s a link to a video of how it will look. h t t p s : / / w w w. y o u t u b e. c o m / w a t c h? v=x1cxmhnkzrs The Friends of Tynemouth Outdoor Pool, the charity set up to drive forward the inspirational and ambitious redevelopment of the derelict outdoor pool site in Tynemouth one of the UK s biggest community regeneration projects has announced that it will launch an exciting Community Share Offer early in 2017. The Community Share Offer will be designed to give the local and wider community more ownership of the project and more control over the outdoor pool s future, while also helping to fund the capital costs of the development. Phase 1 is anticipated to cost 2million in funding. I am joining the Friends in urging the community and anyone else who might be interested in purchasing Community Shares to register their interest at the Friends website at; htt ps://www.ty nemout hout doorpool.c om/ communityshares/ CONTACT ALAN 99 Howard Street, North Shields NE30 1NA www.alancampbellmp.co.uk campbellal@parliament.uk 0191 2571927
