Become a Mentor Change a life Volunteer at: www.youngglasgowtalent.org

Having a Mentor Glasgow has over half of Scotland s most deprived postcodes, with two thirds of the city s young people living in those areas. The outlook can be bleak for young people living in deprivation. For care experienced young people, it s even darker. More than 80% leave school at 16 or before. They re four times more likely to be unemployed than their peers. Only a tiny minority move on to higher education Unless they have a mentor. Every day we hear another amazing story. A young person staying on to get more from school, another getting exam results they deserve, another a job, place at college or university. We recruit, train and match inspired volunteer mentors with care experienced and disadvantaged young people in Glasgow secondary schools, with fantastic outcomes. OF MENTORED 79% YOUNG PEOPLE CHOOSE TO RETURN TO SCHOOL COMPARED TO 27% OF NON-MENTORED AND A NATIONAL AVERAGE OF 15% Here s what our young people say... I OPENED THE RESULTS AND I THOUGHT THAT CAN T BE RIGHT BUT IT WAS! IF IT WASN T FOR MY DAD AND MY MENTOR, I WOULDN T HAVE BEEN CONFIDENT IN MYSELF ENOUGH TO TRY MY HARDEST. THEY BELIEVED IN ME WHEN NO ONE ELSE DID. GAVE ME CONFIDENCE I NEVER THOUGHT I WOULD HAVE. MY MENTOR HELPED ME STRIVE FOR MY BEST AND TO STICK IN AT SCHOOL.

Being a Mentor Our volunteer mentors come from every walk of life, age group and type of organisation. Over 40% are male helping young people who lack a male role model. There are as many under 35 years of age as over 65 with the majority at the peak of their careers. Every profession and job is represented. The only qualification required is being able to put a young person first. Here s what our mentors say... YOU CAN T UNDERESTIMATE JUST HOW IMPORTANT IT IS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE TO HAVE SOMEONE THERE FOR THEM, SOMEONE THEY CAN DEPEND ON, WHO LISTENS. IT S AN HOUR OF YOUR TIME, IT WILL BE THE BEST HOUR OF YOUR WEEK! WHEN YOU BUILD A GOOD, SOLID, TRUSTING RELATIONSHIP, YOU LL SEE YOUR YOUNG PERSON BLOSSOM AND A BRIGHTER FUTURE OPEN UP FOR THEM AND BELIEVE ME, THERE S NO BETTER FEELING!

Tom & Alfie s Story I m Tom. For the last few years I ve been mentoring a young man in a school in the East End of Glasgow. It took a little time to build a great relationship with my mentee, but he is an astonishing young man. Together we refocused his attention on the education he d need to get a job in engineering - his chosen career. I m very proud to say he s now at college with a Network Rail scholarship and a big step closer. Alfie has had challenges, but I know from other mentors how desperate things can get for their young people. Some have faced homelessness, extremely difficult home situations and close to giving up on school and themselves. Their mentors really make a huge difference. I m Alfie. Tom was my mentor. He s a guy that actually talks with you and helps you a lot, and he is a good person. With a mentor, you get help, a chance to talk with someone who is on a similar pathway to you. We re lucky to have this opportunity! THIS EXTRA SUPPORT IS SO IMPORTANT AND ALLOWS YOUNG PEOPLE TO SEE THAT A REALLY POSITIVE FUTURE CAN BE PLANNED AND ACHIEVED. JUST KNOWING THAT YOU HAVE SOMEONE WHO CARES ABOUT YOUR FUTURE CAN MAKE SUCH A DIFFERENCE.

Impact Our impact on attainment, achievement and post-school destinations has been transformational. 81% OF YGT LEAVERS WENT ONTO EMPLOYMENT, FURTHER & HIGHER EDUCATION COMPARED TO A 57% NATIONAL FIGURE Here s what the schools say... I CAN T RECOMMEND THE MCR PATHWAYS PROGRAMME HIGHLY ENOUGH. THE MENTORS HAVE PLAYED AN INVALUABLE ROLE IN SUPPORTING OUR YOUNG PEOPLE AND PUPILS ARE ACTIVELY SEEKING OUT OPPORTUNITIES TO BE MENTORED. MCR PATHWAYS IS AN ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC PROGRAMME. IT IS VALUABLE AND WORTHWHILE AND DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE. THE SCHOOL IS A BUZZ WITH ACTIVITY AND NEW FACES AND THE PUPILS RELISH THE EXPERIENCES. We Need You Join our community of committed volunteer mentors who donate an hour a week during school hours. Putting a young person first is the only qualification you need, we will provide all the training and support. Or can your organisation help? Become a Partner who encourages and supports staff to become mentors. Pioneering Partners go further and engage directly with the young people to provide tasters, experiences and opportunities. When I met my mentee she was very unsure of herself. It has been good to see her grow in confidence. It is really rewarding seeing someone change in just a few months. Knowing that you are giving back without expecting something in return is one of the best feelings you can have. Mentor, Springburn Academy P.O.
