Lesson 1 Nutrition and Your Health What Is Nutrition? Nutrients The substances in food that promote normal growth, maintenance, and repair in your body are called nutrients. Nutrition Nutrition is the study of how our bodies use the food we eat to keep us healthy.

Lesson 1 Nutrition and Your Health How Your Body Uses Food Digestion is the process in which food is broken down into a form your body can use. Your body can make some nutrients. But most nutrients come from the foods you eat.

Lesson 2 The Nutrients You Need The Six Essential Nutrients The nutrients that you get from food are called the essential nutrients. The six classes of essential nutrients are: 1. carbohydrates 2. fats 3. proteins 4. vitamins 5. minerals 6. water

Lesson 2 The Nutrients You Need Carbohydrates A carbohydrate is a chemical composed of one or more simple sugars. Carbohydrates can be sugars or starches. Sugars are found in foods such as fruit, honey, table sugar, candy, and desserts. Starches are found in foods such as rice, pasta, and bread.

Lesson 2 The Nutrients You Need Proteins Proteins are nutrients that supply the body with energy for building, maintaining, and repairing tissues and cells. Proteins help the body break down and use nutrients for energy. Proteins are also the building blocks for muscles.

Lesson 2 The Nutrients You Need Fats Fats are nutrients that store energy and store some vitamins. Fats are used for many things in the body, including helping your body produce hormones.
