DAY 1 slides 4-17 (50 minutes) Background Knowledge Vocabulary access compare valid product(s) service(s) avoid reduce behavior personal risk

What are our Learning Goals for this Unit? They come from our Standards/Benchmarks All standards in HE 5.P, HE.5.C, HE.5.B can be addressed. Language Arts, Math, and Science Standards may also be reflected in unit. By end of unit student should be able to: Describe characteristics of valid health information, products and services. Examine when you would need help in making a health related decision. Who can you ask and why you should ask? Determine how behavior affects your personal health and identify examples from this unit. Identify human body parts and body systems specific to your growth and development. Determine how to avoid or reduce health risks and be responsible for health behaviors. Identify examples from this unit.

Pre-Test Discuss and record positive examples of things you do or can do to build these life skills. Be specific.

Puberty is the time when a young person s body begins maturing and changing to become like an adult s. At puberty, many changes begin. Puberty begins usually two years earlier for girls than for boys. For most girls, puberty begins between the ages of ten and twelve. It may, however, begin as early as age eight or as late as age seventeen. The changes may take place over several years. When these changes are complete, the person is physically mature.

Environment and Growth Growth does not depend only on hormones. How people grow depends also on their lifestyle, or how they live. People need good food, rest and exercise to be healthy. During puberty, your need for nutrition-rich food and rest increase. Because your body is changing so rapidly, it uses more energy than it ever has before. In order to be as strong and healthy as you can, you must eat healthful foods and get plenty of sleep. Choosing a healthful lifestyle is part of becoming a responsible person. Predict how lifestyle and health behaviors might affect puberty. (look at pictures)

VOCABULARY Word Sort Which words belong to females only, which ones belong to males only and which belong to both males and females? Match definitions & record. Gland: An organ that releases chemicals into the body is a gland. Pituitary Gland: This is a very important gland and is called the master gland since it controls so many body functions. Hormones: Hormones are chemicals that start, change or stop certain body processes. Human Growth Hormone (HGH): A hormone made by the pituitary gland necessary for normal growth. Ovaries (singular is Ovary) : Female sex glands. The ovaries produce estrogen and ova, also referred to as eggs or ovum one egg released each month. Testes: Male sex glands, responsible for the development of the primary and secondary sex characteristics. Estrogen: Estrogen are hormones and these hormones produce secondary sex characteristics and influence the menstrual cycle. Check for Understanding 0-1-2-3-4

ENDOCRINE SYSTEM/GLANDS Checking for Understanding Which gland produces eggs? Notice how glands are in many areas inside your body. Use QR code for more information.

Increase in height Voice becomes softer and fuller Growth of thicker and darker hair on the legs Growth of hair around the pubic area Growth in hair under the arms Increase in perspiration Hips become wider and rounder Increase in breast size Increase in size of the reproductive

Menstrual Cycle is a series of changes or 4 phases in the female body that includes: maturation of ovum/egg, release of egg(ovulation), uterine lining preparation and menstruation(shedding of lining). Menstruation is the time when blood from uterine lining is shed from contractions in the uterine walls(cramps) and exits through the vagina typically 3-7 days, light to heavy flow, all girls are different.

Menstruation is also referred to as a period. Blood is released from the vagina for a period of 3-7 days. A period flow may be light to heavy. Each menstrual cycle lasts about 28 days.

Summarize the Menstrual Cycle in 4 stages, use appropriate terminology.

Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) is a severe illness caused by toxins from the Staphylococcus bacteria. Symptoms of TSS are fever, vomiting, diarrhea, fainting, and a skin rash. Tell your parents right away if you have symptoms and have them call a doctor. Monitor and change tampons frequently to reduce your risks of TSS and read all inserts related to products used.

Using A BYOD device Investigate Bacteria. Draw conclusions from that investigation Predict What it is and Does What causes It Can It Be Treated or Cured. Examples of Bacteria Are

DAY 2 Human Growth and Development Review of Process and Deepening Knowledge (Slides 18-28) 30 minutes Teachers: With ENOUGH TIME you can combine Days 1 and 2 and Days 3 and 4 in the 5 th grade curriculum. Day 5(possibly Day 3) HIV/AIDS portion can be connected to a Science Unit. Remember extension, reflection and deepening understanding cannot be managed in a single period by any student.

3 minute 15 second Video Overview of Reproductive Systems You Must Have Discovery Education Opened on your Computer (Must be logged in) through Angel In Order For this Link to Open Directly. PLEASE STOP VIDEO PRIOR TO SECTION ON FERTILIZATION http://app.discoveryeducation.com/player/view/assetguid/5 A18E463-9661-4622-8EB7- C4413404D02A

OVARIES: A gland that produces estrogen and ova. Ova are female reproductive cells. Ova also are called eggs. An ovum is one egg.

FALLOPIAN TUBES: Four-inch-long tubes through which ova move to the uterus. A female has two Fallopian tubes-one near each ovary.

UTERUS: An organ that supports a fertilized ovum during pregnancy. The uterus is muscular and stretches when a baby is growing inside. Uterine Wall is shed during menstruation.

CERVIX: The lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. During childbirth, the baby passes through the cervix then through the vagina.

VAGINA: A tube that connects the uterus to the outside of the body. The vagina is very muscular. It stretches when a mother gives birth.

Checking for Understanding: (write numbers up on board on slide 0-4 have students hold up their fingers for number they believe is correct structure use labeled diagram on table for group work.) What structure allows a baby to grow and develop inside a women s body? What structure could help keep bacteria from entering the uterus? What structure created the eggs or ova you were born with?

Ovulation Each month a mature egg is released from one ovary, the egg (ovum) travels down the Fallopian Tube. If sperm is present, fertilization may occur. If the ovum (egg) is not fertilized, the nutrient rich lining breaks away from the uterus and menstruation occurs.

Fertilization is the joining of an ovum and a sperm to make a single cell.

APPLY CONCEPT Compare another example of how 2 things joined together can make something else. (science experiment?) Example: Red dye and blue dye combined makes purple dye, an egg in boiling water makes it go from liquid to solid or chocolate in heat can go from solid to liquid, or plant pollination model.

DAY 3 DEEPENING KNOWLEDGE and CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING (30-40 minutes) Teachers could rotate 4 stations(slides 30-33), have all students do all 4 rotations or modify and do 2 extension activities where Group A does 1 and moves to 2 and Group B does 3 and moves to 4, etc.

Synthesize Process - use 5 structures to track process from point egg is released(beginning) all the way through menstruation (end of process). Use numbers 1-5 to track the order.

Let s Build Higher Order Thinking Skills!!!! In your group develop a level 3 and level 4 higher order thinking question that you and your teacher can answer using power point information, background knowledge, or collaborative research. Example: Differentiate between menstruation and menstrual cycle. Your teacher will have a question box for you if you feel you want to privately ask a question. Please remember to use accurate and appropriate terminology.

Florida Standards/Cross-Curricular Activities Perform at least one of the following standards-based or cross-curricular activities: Science Experiments- (science lessons/experimentspollination, gas to liquid, liquid to solid, etc.) Mathematics - Pie Chart of Menstrual Cycle- 4 phases (28 days of average cycle) also technology is using digital pie graphs. Media - Magazine Advertisements for hygiene products propaganda versus valid information. ELL - Close Reading-Triad language arts (changes in body article/section from book, science pieces changes from liquid to gas to solid, science/math cycles stages of a butterfly) etc. PE/Science/Math Body Composition-BMI calculate a sample BMI, using graphs, reports to answer questions, etc.

PERSONAL HYGIENE Day 4 slides 35-47 (30 minutes) Teachers: Days 4 & 5 can be combined in the 5 th grade girls curriculum. (min 60 minutes) Extension, reflection and deepening understanding cannot be managed in 1-60 minute period by any student. Final Check for Understanding of Standards/Benchmarks Slides 45-47(20 minutes)

Oil glands in the skin, develop quite rapidly during puberty as well as certain sweat glands. The oil glands begin producing much more oil than they did before puberty. The tubes leading from the glands may get clogged with dirt, bacteria and oil, causing infection or pimples. (ACNE) You should wash your face/body with a gentle cleanser after sleeping or sweating if you do not have ability to shower. Oil and Sweat Don t Mix

ACNE. Acne is a skin disorder in which pores are clogged with oil and germs. Acne is common in both boys and girls, but usually worse in boys. A doctor cannot cure acne but can provide special treatments to keep it under control. When the oil glands in your skin make too much sebum (oily substance), the oil ducts get clogged with oil and mix with germs on the skin. Wash your face every morning with gentle cleanser. Do not touch your face; your hands have dirt and oil on them that can clog pores. Use makeup products sparingly and clean makeup brushes often. What to do

Perspiration by itself has no odor. Perspiration that reacts with bacteria on the skin causes odor.

The sweat glands, especially those in the armpits and in the pubic area, become more active during adolescence. Hot weather, exercise or excitement often cause more perspiration. Remember, perspiration by itself has no odor but reacts with bacteria on the skin. This can produce an unpleasant odor. You can control odor by taking a daily bath or shower and by using underarm deodorant.

Remember: Bathe or shower everyday. Washing with soap and water removes perspiration, dirt and bacteria. And: Ask your parents or guardians about deodorant (gets rid of unpleasant odors) and antiperspirant (stops perspiration).

Hair grows around the pubic area. It can be brown, blonde, red or black. It can be curly or straight. It grows to a certain length and then stops growing. It grows under the armpits and on the legs. Hair gets thicker and darker on girl s legs.

Types of Razors and Razor Information

Breast Bud: is a hard lump that forms behind the nipple. The nipple is the spot in the center of the breast. Bra: is an undergarment that holds the breasts close to the chest. A bra is worn for support, comfort and modesty. Breast Exam: As you mature, it is good practice to learn how to perform breast self-exams to know your breast tissue at a normal stage in order to better check for breast cancer.

Clasps in the front or back and may or may not have detachable shoulder straps. Clasps in the front to make it easier to put on.

Have regular checkups. Accept your body and its changes. Be confident and proud. Be kind to self and others during these physical and mental changes. DON T BE A BULLY!!! Use positive comments or don t comment at all. Don t participate in gossip and drama. Do not share a razor, even if you have permission to shave. Bathe/shower each day. Avoid picking or squeezing acne. Change pads, liners and tampons often. Tell your parents/guardians if you have symptoms of TSS. Limit caffeine, take warm baths, and exercise to lessen cramps. Choose responsible actions if you have mood swings. Keep a calendar of your menstrual period. Avoid/reduce your risk behaviors. Make good choices.

Analyze some of your Health Behaviors. What are some healthy habits and life skills you can put into action that will help reduce your health risks?

Post Test Critique your previous examples. How can you build these life skills now? Be specific, use examples from unit.

Demonstrate Understanding of Learning Goals Answer the following Standards/Benchmarks Questions: Provide 1-2 good examples using complete sentences that demonstrate understanding at a level 3 or higher. Make observations on how you access valid health information, products and services. (4 points) Distinguish when you would need help in making a health related decision, who can you ask and why you should ask? (4 points) Hypothesize how your behavior affects your personal health. Use example from this unit. (4 points) Predict how you can/will be responsible for your personal health behaviors, specifically to your growth and development. (4 points) Summarize 4 things you can do to avoid or reduce your health risks. (4 points)

DAY 5 HIV /AIDS (30 minutes Minimum)

HIV/AIDS VIDEO (HIV and AIDS: STAYING SAFE - 15 minute video) Remember to have Discovery Education(through ANGEL is fine) open on computer for link to work. HIV ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES Select 1 of the 5 activities at the end and then have students complete organizer (20-30 minutes) Resources also found in SHAREPOINT

Summarize The 4 ways of contracting/preventing HIV/AIDS Compare Video to What You knew about HIV/AIDS before, What You Know Now and What you Still Need To Know More About. I knew before I know now Need to know more about
