Working together for families when they need it the most Your guide to the Together for Families Programme Elena Heatherwick/Save the Children Magda Rakita/Save the Children

Thanks a million Helping good causes and supporting great work in our community is at the heart of what we do at wilko, helping to cement our place within the local communities we serve, enabling hard-working families to be the best they can be. Over the last 10 years, wilko has worked with more than 60 national and local charities and raised an incredible 10m through lots of fundraising activities across our stores, head office and distribution centres. We ve raised this fantastic amount of money for so many great causes because of the passion and enthusiasm of our team members and customers to help charities that are close to their hearts. The journey so far has been immense, and now from 2018 we re harnessing all this enthusiasm into one national charity programme that supports a smaller selection of charity partners for a longer period of time, so we can have a much bigger impact! We re really pleased with how this programme has developed and we re looking forward to working with the new charity partners over the coming years and helping them make a great impact on the people they all support. Nick Wilkinson Family Charity Ambassador Together for Families Programme Over the next three years, starting in March 2018, we ve joined forces with three charity partners to create one programme designed to support families when they need it the most. All the charities tackle a key social issue that our customers are often faced with in everyday family life. The funding goes towards helping families in the UK now, when they need it the most. We know life can be tough at times. Whether it s a diagnosis in the family that s potentially life threatening, or really struggling to make ends meet meaning children don t get off to the best start in life, we hope that through this programme we can raise enough money to make a real difference. We re working together to provide people living with dementia with the support they need, where they need it the most Did you know? Dementia is the leading cause of death in the UK. Every three minutes someone develops dementia, by 2020 that ll be over one million people. support parents to boost their children s learning and give them the best start in life Did you know? More than 250,000 children in England started school behind their peers in 2015 because of problems at home or financial difficulty. Disadvantaged from day one, these children struggle to make up for lost time. fund specialist nurses across the UK to ensure that no young person faces cancer alone Did you know? Every single day in the UK, seven young people aged 13-24 are given the news that they have cancer. 2 3

Our aim is to make a real difference We re aiming to raise If we reach these targets, we could For Alzheimer s Society Fully fund 45 dementia support workers per year. That s an incredible 79,284 hours of support for people living with dementia and their families across the UK Plus 133,200 hours of support through their helpline over the next three years that s an incredible 555k per year, per charity For Save the Children Fully fund essential household items and early learning resources for 11,500 disadvantaged children Work with 125,000 families and get parents involved with learning and development Raise awareness of the importance of learning with 10.5 million people Working together for families when they need it the most For Teenage Cancer Trust Fully fund all their specialist nurses across the UK for an incredible 300 days. That s 55,500 hours of specialist nursing care, making sure young people receive the best possible support If you d like to make a donation today, you can by going to virginmoneygiving.com/togetherforfamilies To achieve our goals, the programme will have an active fundraising plan that all team members and customers can get involved with. All money raised will be split equally between the three charity partners*. Getting the message out We ll also be raising awareness of the work the charities do and the support they offer to families via our marketing channels, so that they get their messages heard. * Each charity will have the option to host individual charity fundraising and awareness raising events each year 4 and all the proceeds from this event shall go to the charity hosting the event. 5

Dementia is the leading cause of death in the UK and the only one we cannot prevent, cure or even slow down. With nearly 44% of people affected, nearly half of wilko team members will have a connection to dementia in some way. Dementia is devastating and it isn t just about memory loss. It is not a natural part of ageing but caused by diseases of the brain such as Alzheimer s disease. For someone with the condition, as well as their family and friends, dementia means the plans you made, and the future you thought you had, will not be so. A lack of support means that it s increasingly likely that these people will feel lonely or even depressed. We believe it s time for people with dementia to have a new deal. In our new strategy, The New Deal on Dementia we make these promises: We will be available to every person who receives a diagnosis, who needs us. We want everyone affected by dementia to know, whatever you are going through, wherever you are, whoever you are, you can turn to us for support, help and advice. We will change the conversation on dementia. We will bring dementia rights into the mainstream and make sure people with dementia are treated as equal members of society. We want everyone to know that, in your community, by campaigning, giving your time or your money, you can join us to make change happen. We will lead dementia research, building connections between researchers, funders and policymakers nationally and internationally. We will fund research that will: find the answers that help us understand dementia better; prevent or slow its development; and find a cure. At the same time, we will use research to better support everyone living with dementia today. We get to help people to start living well with dementia. This is why I love being a Dementia Support Worker. Alzheimer s Society operates in England, Wales and Northern Ireland Registered charity no. 296645 I am now able to offer practical and emotional support to those living with dementia and their families. You can see on the faces of some of the service users how valuable the support is to them; they re smiling. Or they will tell you how much better things are at home and thank you for your help Hayley, Dementia Support Worker The money that wilko raises means that people living with dementia get the support they need, where they need it Please note that 10% of the funds we donate to Alzheimer s Society throughout our partnership will go to Alzheimer s Scotland (Scottish Charity Regulator, no. SC022315) 6 7

Save the Children Fund is a registered company limited by guarantee (Company No. 178159) Registered Charity No. 213890 (England & Wales) and SC039570 (Scotland) Save the Children WHO WE ARE We support parents across the UK, so they can give their children the best start in life. Being a parent is hard and for families going through tough times, it s even harder. Many parents work long hours for not enough, or struggle to pay the bills or put food on the table. They simply can t afford the things all young children need. Books and toys. The space to play. Even a hot meal or a bed. For children, growing up like this has a huge impact on their lives. It holds them back at school and later in life. Together, we can give every child the bright future they deserve. HOW WILL YOUR FUNDRAISING SUPPORT US? We re transforming the support our children get from birth through to the start of primary school. We re working in communities across the UK to help struggling parents access the basics they need at home that most of us take for granted. We re also helping busy mums and dads boost their children s early learning at home building their confidence, and showing them how to make learning easy and fun for their children. THAT LITTLE BIT OF HOPE AND HELP Magda Rakita/Save the Children ON AVERAGE, CHILDREN FROM THE POOREST 20% OF THE POPULATION ARE ALREADY 17 MONTHS BEHIND IN THEIR EARLY LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT BY THE AGE OF THREE Magda Rakita/Save the Children 8 Save the Children provided Kelly and her two children with toys, beds, and a buggy things she just couldn t afford on her own. Elena Heatherwick/Save the Children It was such a big relief off my shoulders, with having two kids and struggling just having that little bit of hope and help. If it wasn t for Save the Children, I don t know what we would have done. It opened a window for us; I thought I would have nothing for the baby. Robert Ormerod/Save the Children 9

MY TEENAGE CANCER TRUST NURSE HAS BEEN MY ROCK YOUNG PEOPLE SHOULDN T FACE CANCER ALONE. TOGETHER, WE CAN MAKE SURE THEY DON T. We do it by helping young people and their families deal with the many ways that cancer can affect your body, your mind and your life. We do it in partnership with the NHS and by bringing young people together so they can support each other. And we do it from the moment cancer is diagnosed until long after treatment is over. What that means day-to-day varies a lot, from giving straightforward answers about treatment or relationships, to delivering specialist nursing care. It can be helping young people with cancer deal with their worries together, explaining complex medical language, or helping young people talk to their employers about what s going on. BUT WHATEVER WE DO, WE RE HERE TO MAKE SURE YOUNG PEOPLE ALWAYS HAVE SOMEONE TO TURN TO. We have 28 specialist cancer units within NHS hospitals across the UK. They bring young people together in a space that feels more like a home from home than a hospital ward. Over 80 of our nurses and youth support workers provide expert care to young people 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. However, currently, for every young person we support, there s another we can t. We want every young person with cancer to have access to a specialist nurse, so we re expanding our team to fund new specialist nursing teams in local communities to be there when families need them most. With the support from wilko, the Together for Families Programme could fund expert nursing care so that young people receive the best possible care and support. Lorraine, my Teenage Cancer Trust nurse, has been my rock this whole time. She always knew exactly what I needed to hear. The support she gave was adapted to me not only as a young person but as a mother as well. From helping me to get an ipad so that I could FaceTime my very young daughter when I was in isolation, to exploring childcare options for me to fit in with my appointments, she was brilliant. It s so reassuring to know that she is still there for me and my family today.
