Indian Red Cross Society Gujarat State Branch Thalassemia & Sickle Cell Prevention Programme th School going students of standard 8 of covering Districts Ahmedabad, Anand, Jamnagar, Kutch, Rajkot, Vadodara, Bhavnagar Government of Gujarat Health Department 842 Out of 15,000 Students of Prevented Students under Thalassemia Prevention Programme

Indian Red Cross is one the leading organization in Gujarat in proving Humanitarian and Health Service. Thalassemia Programme is one of the major project among other various Health programmes that have been implemented by the State Branch. As per estimate there are more than 10000 Thalassemia children in Gujarat and each year nearly 1000 Thalassemia children are being added in it. Thalassemia Major is one of the diseases which is incurable having no Medicine. This disease is genetically driven for children from their parents, if both of them are Thalassemia Minor. Thalassemia Major Children hardly live for 10 to 15 Years and they require frequent Blood transfusion. Since there is no Medicine or treatment available to save the affected persons, it is found very significant to prevent it from inheriting this disease from their parents by avoiding marriages between two Thalassemia Minors. Indian Red Cross Society has started Thalassemia Prevention Programme from Sept 2004 in which various Universities, Schools and Colleges of Gujarat have been covered. Till date we have screened more than 10 lac students where in we found 4% to 5% Thalassemia Minor. To make Thalassemia Prevention Programme more successful we get the support from Government of Gujarat as well as from Private Sectors.

The Department of Health and Family Welfare of Central Govt. has issued guidelines to control Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Anemia. Thalassemia and Sickle are genetic diseases. In India thousands of children are born with the said diseases. As a result, the ratio of the death of such children had increased. The source to control the disease is to advice & ensure that two Thalassemia Minor do not marry. Since if such thing occurs there is a possibility of the birth of Thalassemia Major Child. Taking in to consideration of the above facts, the Govt. of Gujarat Health Department th has decided to screen all the school going students of standard 8 for which the screening work is allotted to Gujarat Red Cross. The Additional Director (Health),Gandhinagar has also issued a letter to all Dist. Education Officers to issue necessary instructions to the Principals of the schools under their control to co-operate the Gujarat Red Cross teams when they visit for the screening work. Accordingly the inauguration function was arranged at Sadhu Vasvani School, situated at Sardarnagar on 24/11/2016 where in following dignitaries remained present. 1. Dr. Prakash Parmar - General Secretary, IRCS, GSB 2. Dr. Anil Khatri - Member of Managing Committee- IRCS- GSB. 3. Special Invite Nirmalaben Wadhwani- M.D. Hon. Minister women & Child Welfare- Govt. of Gujarat. 4. Guest of Honor - Shri Navnitbhai Mehta DEO-Ahmedabad. 5. Principal & Staff of the school. Dr. Prakash Parmar- General Secretary; Gujarat Red Cross had given a brief about Thalassemia. More over the Special Invitee & Guest of Honor of the function have also delivered the speech where in they have appreciated Red Cross other humanity activities including Thalassemia. To make programme more successful and great awareness in the society, broachers & various literatures regarding Thalassemia & Sickle Cell have been distributed to the local medias, Principals of the schools, DEO, DDO and reputed social workers. The counseling was also done before the Thalassemia prevention programme started in presence of the above dignitaries. Over & above a movie of Thalassemia was also shown to the students. The team of IRCS has collected 183 blood samples of the students on the inauguration day. The Gujarat Red Cross has carried out the above Screening in Vadodara, Bhavnagar, Kutch, Rajkot, Anand and Jamnagar and over all collected a total of 15152 blood samples of the students. During the screening period, the Principals of the schools & their staff as well as reputed august of the above Dist. have given full support to the Red Cross Team & made the programme successful for which Gujarat Red Cross have no words remained to convey the thanks.
