Anaesthetic Procedure Packs Ensuring maximum barrier precautions vygon@vygon.co.uk www.vygon.co.uk
Anaesthetic Procedure Packs Ensuring maximum barrier precautions It has been estimated that infections associated with care in hospitals affect 9% of patients in NHS hospitals each year. They cost the NHS approximately 1 billion and contribute to the deaths of approximately 5,000 patients. As such hospital acquired infection has become a major current concern and there have been a number of recent proposals and (1, 2) initiatives to reduce its incidence. The Association of Anaesthetists, aware of this current concern, established a working party in conjunction with the Hospital Infection Society and the Medical Devices Agency, to provide advice on infection control in anaesthesia practice. (3) It was found that carrying out procedures in an operating theatre does not pose a lower risk of infection than other hospital locations and the risk of infection, depends on the procedure and on the level of barrier protection, rather than the surrounding environment. (3,4,5) As such the Association of Anaesthetists recommend that when central neural spaces are penetrated full aseptic precautions are required for example:- Insertion of central venous catheters Spinal, epidural and caudal procedures (3) In line with these recommendations, Vygon has worked to develop a range of basic and customised procedure packs to provide maximum barrier precautions, therefore reducing the risk of infection to the patient. SPINAL Code: 0199.30 NPC: FYV030 Considering the nature of this intricate procedure, the contents have been chosen to minimise difficulties, whilst providing all the essential components needed to perform a spinal procedure. As the pressure on the syringe can be high during the delivery of the intrathecal injection down the fine bore spinal needle, a 3ml luer lock syringe is included in this set to avoid risk of disconnection. The set also contains a drape with an offset aperture. The drape measures 80 x 70cm, which makes it suitable for application when the patient is in either the sitting or lateral position and provides total barrier protection throughout the procedure.
