Anaesthetic Procedure Packs Ensuring maximum barrier precautions vygon@vygon.co.uk www.vygon.co.uk

Anaesthetic Procedure Packs Ensuring maximum barrier precautions It has been estimated that infections associated with care in hospitals affect 9% of patients in NHS hospitals each year. They cost the NHS approximately 1 billion and contribute to the deaths of approximately 5,000 patients. As such hospital acquired infection has become a major current concern and there have been a number of recent proposals and (1, 2) initiatives to reduce its incidence. The Association of Anaesthetists, aware of this current concern, established a working party in conjunction with the Hospital Infection Society and the Medical Devices Agency, to provide advice on infection control in anaesthesia practice. (3) It was found that carrying out procedures in an operating theatre does not pose a lower risk of infection than other hospital locations and the risk of infection, depends on the procedure and on the level of barrier protection, rather than the surrounding environment. (3,4,5) As such the Association of Anaesthetists recommend that when central neural spaces are penetrated full aseptic precautions are required for example:- Insertion of central venous catheters Spinal, epidural and caudal procedures (3) In line with these recommendations, Vygon has worked to develop a range of basic and customised procedure packs to provide maximum barrier precautions, therefore reducing the risk of infection to the patient. CONTENTS Basic Set 3 Spinal Procedure Pack 5 Customised Procedure Packs 7

BASIC SET Code: 0199.20 NPC: FYV029 The general, rather than the specific content of the Basic Set makes this pack suitable for departments and units that perform a variety of procedures. Busy Medical and Surgical Directorates may use this set for lumbar puncture, CVC and arterial line placement. In the operating theatre environment it is used for procedures such as Epidural catheter placement and Spinal injections. Outer Wrap 75 x 90cm Large sterile field protects against accidental contamination during the assembly of components and accessories. Hand Towel For hand drying before gowning and applying gloves. Contents Tray Contents tray serves as a receptacle for carrying sharps and clinical waste for safe disposal. Gallipot with 4 Ball Swabs Add prep solution directly to gallipot containing ball swabs. Gallipot may be taken to patient to avoid Prep Forceps Use to lift and hold ball swabs during skin prepping. Large Ball Swabs x 2 Use to remove excess skin prep solutions and blood 18g 5µm Filter Needle Use to draw up and filter solutions prior to injection. Aperture Drape 80 x 70cm Use to drape operative area and maintain total barrier protection during the invasive procedure. Syringes & Hypo Needle 2.5, 5, and 10ml Luer Slip Syringe with 21g (1 1/2 ) and 25g (5/8 ) Hypo Needles. Use together to create skin wheal and infiltrate local anaesthetic. SPINAL Code: 0199.30 NPC: FYV030 Considering the nature of this intricate procedure, the contents have been chosen to minimise difficulties, whilst providing all the essential components needed to perform a spinal procedure. As the pressure on the syringe can be high during the delivery of the intrathecal injection down the fine bore spinal needle, a 3ml luer lock syringe is included in this set to avoid risk of disconnection. The set also contains a drape with an offset aperture. The drape measures 80 x 70cm, which makes it suitable for application when the patient is in either the sitting or lateral position and provides total barrier protection throughout the procedure. Outer Wrap 75 x 90cm Large sterile field protects against accidental contamination during the assembly of components and accessories. For hand drying before gowning and applying gloves. Contents Tray Contents tray serves as a receptacle for carrying sharps and clinical waste for safe disposal. Aperture Drape 80 x 70cm Whitacre Spinal Needle (25g x 90mm) Use to drape operative area and maintain total barrier protection during the invasive procedure. For delivery of intrathecal anaesthetic solution. Steel introducer with conical shaped hub for smooth introduction of the Spinal needle. Pencil point needle minimises the risk of post-spinal headache. 3ml Syringe Luer Lock To prevent disconnection of the syringe. Gallipot with 4 Ball Swabs Add prep solution directly to gallipot containing ball swabs. Gallipot may be taken to patient to avoid Prep Forcep Use to lift and hold ball swabs during skin prepping. Large Ball Swabs x 2 Use to remove excess skin prep solutions and blood 18g 5µm Filter Needle Use to draw up and filter solutions prior to injection. Syringes & Hypo Needles 2.5, 5, and 10ml Luer Slip Syringe with 21g (1 1/2 ) and 25g (5/8 ) Hypo Needles. SAVING TIME AND MONEY With the ever increasing demand to improve the efficiency of hospitals and utilise available time, custom packs help by reducing the stock items required for the procedure, thereby decreasing waste, ordering costs and packaging. This in turn allows skilled clinicians the time for hands on care to patients by reducing set up time. REDUCING THE RISK OF INFECTION The components available in Vygon s customised procedure packs have been specifically selected for their high quality and in the case of sterile drapes to provide maximum barrier protection hence helping to reduce the risk of infection to the patient. OUR COMMITMENT TO YOU The receipt of your initial order is only the start of the process. Your custom pack will be tracked and monitored throughout its journey to you by a dedicated sales support person. This ensures on time delivery and consistent supply throughout its life. In addition, on receipt of your initial order a welcome pack will be delivered including contact details and posters of your new pack. A sales executive is also always on hand to provide any additional training, help and advice needed to ensure your pack is a success.
