Cyprus has entered the era of robotic surgery, the most advanced surgical treatment option in the world today, applied for the last four years in our island, offering to Cypriot patients the opportunity to benefit from its really significant advantages. Da Vinci Changing the Experience of Surgery So far, 200 prostate cancer patients have undergone successful radical prostatectomies in Cyprus, while over 250 patients with urological disorders have been operated on using the method. The operations were carried out at the European Urological Centre of Cyprus at the Hippocrateon Private Hospital, by the specialized medical team which is headed by Surgeon Urologist - Andrologist Dr. Demetris Demetriou. The robotics method is applied through the high technology Da Vinci system and it constitutes the most recent revolutionary development in the laparoscopic and least traumatic surgery in the world. The most significant advantage of the method is that it maximizes the surgeons capabilities and renders the operations less painful and safer for the patients. It is almost bloodless and without a trauma, as the large surgical incisions are replaced by incisions of a few millimeters in the patient s body.

Also the duration of anaesthesia is shorter compared to the conventional methods, the loss of blood, complications, post operational pain and discomfort are reduced, while the treatment days are significantly reduced and the patients return to their usual routine is much quicker. The robotic surgical method changes the data for surgeons as well as for patients. Now surgeons can effect more complicated manipulations, which were not possible in the past, therefore, the operations become safer and more effective. Particularly in the radical prostatectomies robotic surgery is today the only method that almost wipes out the main complications of prostatectomies that were carried out by the traditional «open» method - the frequent appearance of erectional dysfunction and urine incontinence. The Da Vinci system has proved its benefits in many surgical fields such as: Cardiothoracic surgery: coronary bypass, mitral valve repair, pulmonary lobectomy for pulmonary cancer, thymectomy for myasthenia gravis Gastrointestinal surgery: bariatric surgery (gastric bypass), colectomies for colon/ rectal cancer, gastrectomy for gastric cancer, hepatectomy, cholecystectomy for gallbladder disease, splenectomy, distal pancreatectomy, Whipple procedure for pancreatic conditions, Heller myotomy for achalasia, gastric fundoplication for gastroesophageal reflux, esophagectomy for esophageal cancer Gynecology: myomectomy for uterine fibroids, treatment of endometriosis, reconnection of the fallopian tubes, sacrocolpopexy for uterine prolaps, hysterectomy for cervical or uterine cancer Urology: partial / radical nephrectomy for kidney cancer, pieloplasty for urinary obstruction, cystectomy for bladder cancer, prostatectomy for prostate cancer Other procedures: thyroidectomy for thyroid cancer, partial laringectomy for throat cancer This happens because it wipes out the probability of injury of the peripheral organs and the nerves that are responsible for the erectional function and the passing of urine.

Da Vinci System Τι είναι ο προστάτης The Da Vinci system is the latest revolutionary advancement in the field of laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgery worldwide. It maximizes surgeons capabilities while making surgical procedures less painful and safer for patients. The Da Vinci Surgical System comprises three components: a surgeon s console, a patient-side robotic cart with 4 arms manipulated by the surgeon (one to control the camera and three to manipulate instruments), and a high-definition 3D vision system. μεταξύ της ουροδόχου κύστης και της The Da Vinci system, improves comprehension of depth, offering to surgeons a three dimensional image. Also, it affords the possibility of magnification of the operational field for very accurate and detailed movements. In the robotic system smaller instruments are used than those in the laparoscopic surgery, and they have the possibility of turning through 360 degrees with the result of affording excellent plasticity, accuracy and stability of movements. ρήθρας. Also, it affords to the surgeon the possibility of approaching inapproachable up to now parts during the operation in absolute safety. The operation is realized through incisions of very few millimeters, which prevent large losses of blood and the injury to the body. The robot does not replace the surgeon. It serves as the surgeon s assistant subject to its total control and management.

Prostate Cancer Prostate cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the prostate. The prostate is a gland in the male reproductive system located just below the bladder and in front of the rectum. It is about the size of a walnut and surrounds the urethra (the tube that empties urine from the bladder). The prostate gland produces fluid that is one of the components of semen. Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin malignancy in men and is responsible for more deaths than any other cancer, except for lung cancer. However, microscopic evidence of (prostate) cancer is found at autopsy in many if not most men. Da Vinci Prostatectomy is a minimally invasive, robotic-assisted surgical procedure that removes the cancerous prostate gland and related structures. For most patients, the three main concerns about prostate cancer are: Getting rid of the cancer while maintaining both urinary and sexual (erectile) function. Da Vinci Prostatectomy offers patients many potential benefits over traditional open surgery in these areas including: Effective cancer control Improved and Early Return of Sexual Function Better Chance for Return of Urinary Continence Shorter hospital stay Less blood loss Less need for blood transfusion Lower risk of complications Lower risk of wound infection Fewer days with catheter Less pain Faster recovery and return to normal activities
