Barnardos Barnardo s is managing a team of 4 FTE Family Intervention Workers as part of the SIDAS service. Currently we have just completed recruitment for a Team Manager and Family Intervention Worker The Barnardo s team will focus on supporting families where there are children that have been affected by domestic abuse The Barnardo s team will make an assessment of what outcomes the children and parents/carers need and this will determine the package of flexible support they receive. The Barnardo s programme will put the child voice at the centre of our response Barnardo s staff will work alongside parents/carers to help them understand how children are affected by the trauma of experiencing domestic abuse helping them to understand what their child s behaviour is communicating. Barnardo s staff will always work creatively to engage adults and children giving them creative and therapeutic tools to express how they are feeling and positive activities they can do together The Barnardo s team will look at all the systems around the child and seek to increase understanding of the child s situation and how they can be supported for example by visiting the child s school, attending multi-agency conferences On occasion children may require more specialist support and can be referred to the Barnardo s Mandala Therapy & Play Service for specialist one to one or groupwork support depending on the availability of funding Barnardo s will also oversee the delivery of the training programmes for Victims (Overcoming Abuse) and Perpetrators (Lifeline) and have a core focus on children.

SIDAS mission We have a once in lifetime opportunity to build a service that will keep children at the centre of our response to supporting families in Somerset affected by domestic abuse. Far too often children s voices get lost or ignored, their behaviour misunderstood. Barnardo s knows this has been a great source of frustration for many front line professionals. We are at the beginning of a journey that will get effective support to the hundreds of children each year in Somerset that need it, that will change their lives, address their problems at root cause, give them the tools to cope and recover, and help them to enjoy and achieve. Fundamentally it will also break future cycles of abuse.

Public Health Lead Knightstone has employed a Public Health Lead to work in the Somerset and Mendip areas with GP s in their surgeries. The Public Health Lead will also manage the work of 2 IDVA s based in Yeovil and Taunton Hospitals and eventually with a Worked linked specifically with Paramedics. At present individual victims are seeing medical professionals (A & E and GP s) on average 15 times before a referral is made to IDVA Services. 85% of victims had been in contact with an average of 5 professionals before they got help from an IDVA (or other specialist). 35% of people coming through A & E are victims of domestic abuse, only 6% of these are being seen and forwarded on for support. Are Medical Staff aware of the process of referral? Are Staff confident in spotting signs and asking victims about abuse? Are Staff (reception staff, nurses) aware of the signs? Are their polices and procedures already in place?

Work with GP s and Surgery Staff Set up GP Champions and Single Points of Contact for victims (and perpetrators). Train GP Staff and Surgery Staff to spot the signs, ask the right questions, refer into the MARAC or to IDVA s if necessary. Attend their Team Meetings and training days. Explain about their ability to share relevant information. Be available to offer support if necessary joint working. Make sure Surgeries have correct and up to date information available stickers on doors etc. Make sure the question isn t: I only have a 10 minutes appointment slot, I don t have the time, but What will happen to my patient if I don t do something.

Work within A & E 1 IDVA at Yeovil A & E and 1 IDVA at Musgrove Park A & E. Yeovil IDVA currently working within A & E, Maternity and Emergency Medicine Unit. Doing relevant training with Staff on spotting signs and signposting. Linking in with existing Lead Staff on the MARAC and DASH. Working and offering IDVA support and onward referrals to individuals who come into the hospitals and are showing signs of abuse. Working and offering ongoing referrals with perpetrators. Offering Support to staff and acting as a link between Hospitals and SIDAS Team. New post to help support Paramedic / Ambulance Service being recruited.

Young Persons Violence Advisors For the first time there is now a Young Persons Violence Advisor (YPVA) role within SIDAS specifically to support 13-19 years olds across the county. 16-24 year olds are identified as age group likely to experience abuse in relationships Abuse within teenage relationships can be as high risk as within adult relationships YPVA s will provide support for young people on both sides of controlling relationships as well as those displaying violent behaviours towards family members after witnessing DV within family units. Provide education around identification of Child Sexual Exploitation and support for young people who are victims. Practical safety planning and referral to MARAC for high risk clients Raised awareness of how to identify relationship abuse in young people and CSE through training for agencies.
