Founded in 1967, the Crohn s and Colitis Foundation is the leading national, non-profit, volunteerdriven organization fighting Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Today, the organization has grown to 41 local chapters, including the Michigan Chapter. More than 80 cents of every dollar donated to the Crohn s and Colitis Foundation Michigan Chapter goes directly towards research, support and education. Local donors have enabled many groundbreaking treatments, improved the quality of care for patients with these conditions, and brought the light of hope to countless lives in Michigan and Northwest Ohio. What are Inflammatory Bowel Diseases? Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) includes Crohn s disease and ulcerative colitis. These painful, unpredictable diseases attack the digestive system. Crohn s disease may attack anywhere along the digestive tract, while ulcerative colitis inflames only the large intestine (colon). Symptoms may include severe abdominal pain, joint pain, inhibited growth and bleeding. 1.6 million Americans are impacted by Crohn s disease and ulcerative colitis, with 80,000 of those diagnosed being children under the age of 18. Over 30,000 individuals are diagnosed each year. Most develop IBD between the ages of 15 and 35. There are many others who go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed for years. The Impact of Giving: Each year, another 30,000 patients learn they have Crohn s disease or ulcerative colitis. Research: In 2016 the Crohn s & Colitis Foundation invested over $298 million to support vital research to find a cure nationally, including $2.2 million for eight grants in the state of Michigan. Patient Services: Camp Oasis provides a safe place where kids can be just kids rather than a kid with IBD. This is a lowcost residential summer camp, for over 1,220 pediatric IBD patients. On average, it costs $1,300 per child to attend a week of camp. In 2016, 130 kids attended Camp Oasis in Michigan. Education: In 2016, the Crohn s and Colitis Foundation Michigan s local Chapter Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC) has assisted in guiding and facilitating patient education updates throughout the state which affect over 1,000 IBD patients and their families. Mission: To cure Crohn s disease and ulcerative colitis and to improve the quality of life of 1.6 million children and adults affected by these diseases, including an estimated 50,000 Michigan families affected by these diseases. 2
