Set Aside Prayer God, please set aside everything I think I know about myself, the Steps, the Big Book, Sobriety, and You. Please help me to have an open mind so I may have a new experience and discover the truth. For The Newcomers 1. Your primary obligation is to be here every week. If you do not have transportation, your sponsor will help you make the necessary arrangements. 2. We realize some of you are in no condition to read the Big Book at this time. Therefore, we will read the appropriate parts of the Big Book to you. For those of you who have brought Big Books and are able to follow along, please do so. We will announce each passage by page number and paragraph before we read it. If you are unable to read the book, please participate by listening. Keep in mind that, if you do what we ask you to do, which is to take the Steps as described in the Big Book, you will recover from alcoholism. 3. Although a written inventory is part of the Fourth Step, that doesn t mean you have to do the writing. The person who is sponsoring you through these sessions can write it for you. For The Sponsors 1. Your time commitment to the newcomer is four to five weeks. After that, both you and the newcomer will be expected to sponsor other people through the sessions. 2. During the next month, call or visit the newcomer frequently to see how he or she is doing and to offer encouragement and moral support. 3. Make sure you and the newcomer attend all the sessions together. 4. Write the inventory based on what the newcomer tells you. Remember, the newcomer may not be able to complete the inventory without your assistance. 5. Share your guidance with the newcomer. 6. Answer any questions the newcomer may have about the AA program or the AA way of life. Page 1

Questions on beliefs in AA Label each with either True or False 1. If we are planning to stop drinking, all we have to do is not drink one day at a time. 2. Once I take the steps, I will have a partnership with my higher power. 3. Once I fully understand God, I will be free from my alcoholism. 4. The big book is the only book I need to read. 5. It is not necessary to do step 4 more than once. 6. We can win the confidence of another alcoholic by relating to their experiences. 7. Our purpose in sobriety is to get back into the mainstream of life. 8. There are many different ways you can work this program. 9. Our sobriety is our greatest possession. 10. The authors of the Big Book encourage us to drink. 11. Our main focus needs to be on the alcoholic, not on their family. 12. It takes a long time to recover from alcoholism. 13. The steps are not required they are suggested. 14. Going to meetings and not drinking is vital to our recovery. 15. Our common suffering is what holds us together. Page 2

Considerations for Step One Refer 4th edition, pages XXV to 52 Answer these questions giving your own experiences. Did I have an abnormal reaction to alcohol? Did I crave alcohol when I put alcohol in my body? Am I restless irritable & discontent, unless I can again experience the sense of ease & comfort which comes at once when taking a few drinks? Am I willing to consider that unless I experience an entire psychic change there is very little hope of recovery? Did I come in here to stop drinking or stop suffering? Can I take or leave alcohol alone? Was sufficient reason enough for me to stop or moderate keep me sober? Have I lost the power of choice in drink? Is my so called will power practically non-existent? Am I unable at certain times to bring into my consciousness with sufficient force the memory of suffering & humiliation of even a week or month ago? Am I without defence against the first drink? Can I choose to not drink? Am I having trouble with personal relationships? Can I control my feelings? Am I a prey to misery & depression? Am I having trouble making a living? Am I full of fear? Am I unhappy? Do I feel I can t seem to be of real help to other people? Can I stop drinking on the basis of self-knowledge? Sit with me myself & I and really consider: Am I willing to concede to my innermost self that I have no power and I need a new manager? Read pages 44 71 (steps 2, 3 & 4) to prepare for next week. Week 2 Page 3

Considerations for Step Two Refer pages 44 53 Answer these questions giving your own experiences. Am I clear on what a real Alcoholic is? Am I clear on what a non-alcoholic is? Am I willing to believe that I am suffering from an illness that only a spiritual experience will conquer? Do I have the power to conquer my alcoholism? Do I have the power to not drink? Did I become an alcoholic? Was I crushed by a self-imposed crisis? Do I now believe or am I willing to believe that there is a power greater than myself? What is my choice God is either everything or nothing Considerations for Step Three Refer pages 54 63 Am I willing to ask God to take it away for good? Have I made the decision that I want what the authors in the book have? Am I willing to go to any length to have a spiritual experience? Do I believe that I am an alcoholic? Do I believe that I can t manage my own life? Do I believe that no human power could relieve me of my alcoholism? Do I believe that God could and would if sought? Am I convinced I am an alcoholic? Am I convinced that I can t manage my own life? Am I convinced that no human power could relieve me of my alcoholism? Am I convinced that God could and would if sought? Am I willing to consider that selfishness and self-centeredness is the root of my troubles? Am I willing to consider that my troubles are of my own making? Am I willing to make a decision to turn my will and my life over to the care of God as I understand him? Do I want to be happy, joyous and free? Page 4 Week 3

Moral Inventory Guide Read pages 64 to 72 and: 1. Give examples on each item and 2. state who was affected. Self-Pity - feeling sorry for yourself Self-Justification - to give excuses Self-Importance - exaggerated opinion of self Self-Condemnation - self criticism Criticizing - the act of making judgments on others Negative Thinking - negative thoughts Vulgar Immoral Thinking - crude thoughts, sadistic, homicidal etc. Insincerity - deceptive or hypocritical Procrastination - to put off doing something Dishonesty - to falsely portray myself or to deceive Impatience - to be impatient Hate - strong feeling of dis like or ill will Envy/Jealousy - to desire what belongs to another Laziness - unwilling to work or exert oneself Lying - to lie Gossip - to repeat idle talk or rumours that cause harm Selfishness - more concern for self than for others Sexual misbehaviour harmful relationships Control Anger Others that apply to you Examples Week 4 Character Defect Self Pity Gossip Self-Justification Example in my life Felt so sorry for myself I attempted suicide, never had a fair go, born ugly Talked about my brother to my mother Made excuses for why I drank, always blaming others Page 5 Who was affected (name the people) Brother Mick, mum, James, Allan Mick, mum, Joe, My husband & children, Paul at work

Resentments 1. List people, institutions, or principles with whom you were angry. 2. Why do you resent that person, institution or principle? 3. What was your part? (a) How did you treat that person or institution? (b) Have you ever done what they did to you? (c) What do you do to keep the resentment alive? Week 5 4. Underlying fears: (a) What do you fear you will not receive? (b) What are you afraid will or will not happen? (c) What do you fear they will do? Example Who & Why How I treat them Have I done what they do How I keep resentment alive Fears mother abandoned me twice, treated me as less than my siblings, racist, judgemental, critical, selfopinionated withold love by not contacting her regularly, make sarcastic comments, lash out / react to her comments I abondoned the father of my child, think I m better than others, find fault all the time with everything reruns in my head, justifying my behaviour towards her, talk about her to anyone who ll listen, I m alone, unloved, unloveable, not good enough Fears Just list fears together. You may find some of them in the last part of the resentment list. Read pages 72 84. (Steps 5 9) in preparation for next week. Page 6

Considerations Step Five: pages 59 75 Am I delighted? Can I look the world in the eye? Can I be alone at perfect peace & ease? Have my fears fallen from me? Have I begun to feel the nearness of my creator? Do I feel strongly that the drink problem has disappeared? Do I feel I am on the broad highway walking hand in hand with the spirit of the universe? Have I omitted anything? Have I admitted I have no power over alcohol? Have I admitted that I need a new manager? Have I come to believe that a power greater than me can restore me to sanity? Have I made that decision to turn my will & life over to the care of God as I understand him? Have I made a searching & fearless moral inventory of myself? Have I admitted to myself, God & another person the exact nature of my wrongs? Is my work solid so far? Are the stones properly in place? Have I skimped on the foundation? Have I tried to make mortar without sand? Step Six: page 76 Am I now ready to let God remove everything that is objectionable? Can he now take them all every one? Step Seven prayer: page 76, paragraph 2 Week 6 Page 7

Steps Eight and Nine pages 76 83 How free do I want to be? Homework: Begin making amends & Step 11 meditation. Check with your sponsor as to whether your amends would cause more harm. Meditate after you pray; write down all the guidance on paper. Test the guidance against the 4 absolutes on the next page. Read pages 84 103. (Steps 10 12) Making Amends gain consent first. Face-to-Face Amends (always recommended if you can gain consent) Gain consent: I have some amends to make to you, are you open to hearing them? If the person is not, politely leave it there. If contacting them by phone: Ask if they would like to receive the amends in person, on the phone, or in writing. Name the wrong: I was wrong when I. Say: I am truly sorry. You did not deserve to be treated that way. Ask: What can I do to right these wrongs? Be willing to follow through on the requests. Exceptions would be to place yourself in danger or go against your values (theft, sex, dishonesty, deceit). Ask about other harms: Is there anything else I ve done that has caused you harm? Amends Letter Dear, I m writing this letter to make amends for the harm I caused you. I was wrong when I. I am truly sorry. You did not deserve to be treated this way. Please let me know what I can do to right these wrongs with you. Also let me know if there are other ways I have harmed you. Sincerely, Your Name, Phone number and Mailing address Page 8

Meditation If I am not receiving thoughts when I listen, the fault is not God s. Usually it is because there is something I will not do: Something wrong in my life I will not face and make right A habit or indulgence I will not give up A person I will not forgive A wrong relationship in my life I will not give up An amend I m refusing to make Resistive to following God s guidance Page 10

11 th Step Meditation Write down all thoughts received during meditation. Test them with the 4 Absolutes. 4 Absolutes Honesty Purity Loving Unselfishness Examples: 1. Give them a piece of my mind - Is it honest, pure, loving, unselfish? * No 2. Be patient with others today - Is it honest, pure, loving, unselfish? * Yes 3. I need to avoid that person - Is it honest, pure, loving, unselfish? * No 4. Be kind to others today - Is it honest, pure, loving, unselfish? * Yes 5. Accept others as they are * Yes - Is it honest, pure, loving, unselfish? As you can see, numbers 2, 4 & 5 are honest, pure, loving, and unselfish. This indicates they are guidance from God and the others are from Self. Page 11

Considerations Step Ten: How am I going to know if I am in fit spiritual condition? Have I ceased fighting anything or anyone even alcohol? Has sanity returned? Am I seldom interested in liquor? Do I recoil from alcohol as from a hot flame? Do I react sanely and normally? Does this happen automatically? Do I have a new attitude towards liquor is it without effort on my part? Have I been placed in a position of neutrality safe and protected? Has the problem been removed? Am I willing to do the disciplines required to be kept in fit spiritual condition? Step Eleven Was I resentful selfish dishonest or afraid today? Do I owe an apology? Have I kept something to myself that should be discussed with someone at once? Was I kind and loving towards all today? What could I have done better? Was I thinking of myself most of the time today? Was I thinking what I could do for others or what I could pack into the stream of life? Have I asked for forgiveness and what corrective measures need to be taken? Step Twelve: Do I want to quit for good and am I willing to go to any lengths to do so? What would happen to AA if everyone did AA in sobriety the way you re doing it today? Do I have a foundation stone of my recovery? Am I working with others and am I helping others? Page 12 Week 7
