The path to holistic health...
Ayur means life and Veda means science
What is Ayurveda? Ayurveda is the medicine that has stood the test of time, with the aim of preserving health and eliminating disease from the root. The World Health Organization acknowledges Ayurveda as the oldest (5000 years) scientific and holistic health care system. We are living in a modern era in which our five senses are bombarded from many directions. This can result in a disruption to the natural rhythm of life. Ayurveda is that which brings us back to the rhythm of nature, recognizing that the science of life is embedded in nature s elements - earth, water, fire, air and space - and that the elements are part of our very existence. In times of global warming and environmental disruption, mankind is questioning the relationship between having a healthy earth and having a healthy mind and body. Ayurveda insists that within nature s balance lie all the remedies for good health. Sri Sri Ayurveda offers the best of Ayurveda to the world.
Ayurveda & breath, meditation and yoga Although breathing, meditation, yoga and Ayurveda are treated as separate entities, they share the same fundamental principles, originating as a part of the greater system of Vedic Science that was passed on from the ancient rishis of the Himalayas. Sri Sri Ayurveda uniquely applies all four disciplines. Each discipline is based upon the principles of trigunas (Satva, Rajas and Tamas) and the panchamahabuthas (earth, air, fire, water, space) and encompasses an understanding of how the body works (Dosha-Dhatu-Mala/Constitution-tissue-waste material theory). All share the common understanding of a healthy body being dependent on a healthy and balanced mind. Both yoga and Ayurveda advocate the regular practice of pranayama and meditation, as well as the use of herbs, purification procedures, food and chanting of mantras for physical and mental health. In Ayurveda the purification procedures are known as Panchakarma.
ether Vata air Prakriti (constitution) is our unique nature Our natural constitution, the qualities we were born with, is called Prakriti. In Ayurveda, there are no generalized criteria for health. Health is individual and each and every person is unique. Ayurveda works with the individual qualities of the person. Therefore, the Ayurveda physician will focus on the person, rather than on the particular disease. Our constitution is formed from the subtle qualities of the five elements that form three dosha s : Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Vata is a combination of the subtle elements of air and space, Pitta is formed by fire and water and Kapha by earth and water. Every constitution consists of the three dosha s, but in different an proportions. These proportions are set at the time of conception, thus determining the constitution. If a person is able to keep the dosha s in these proportions, he will be healthy. Changes is these proportion are the root cause of disease. Therefore, Ayurveda says that becoming healthy is nothing but bringing imbalance in de dosha s back to balance.

Characteristics: warmth, lightness and moisture. A Pitta person is energetic, dynamic, intelligent, orderly and efficient. Physical characteristics: normal to sensitive, reddish skin, feels usually warm, can have burning complaints. Since there is relatively less earth, air and ether, the fire can easily become dominant. They mostly have an average and graceful build. Digestion is strong and fast (fire element). When unbalanced: carries a lot of heat, prone to high blood pressure by too much activity and anger, eczema and other skin complaints. Kapha is responsible for structure and lubrication. Panchakarma is the health anchor of Ayurveda Sri Sri Ayurveda offers a way to get back to the nature through Panchakarma therapy, which is aligned with your unique personal needs. It encapsulates five basic types of purification therapies, designed for the internal cleansing of the body in order to bring the doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) into balance. The importance of Panchakarma in Ayurveda is due to its effective set of preventive, curative and highly relaxing therapies. It is also known for its beneficial effects on overall health, wellness and self-healing. Before the actual operation of purification begins, there is a need to prepare the body in prescribed methods to encourage the release of toxins. The two procedures are Snehana and Swedana. In Snehana (Abhyanga), oil is applied to the entire body with a particular type of massage which helps the toxins to move towards the gastro-intestinal tract. Oil massage also makes the superficial and deep tissues soft and supple, thus helping to remove stress and to nourish the nervous system. Snehana is given daily for three to seven days, as indicated by the Ayurveda physician. Swedana is sudation or sweating and is given every day immediately following the Snehana. An herbal concoction may be added to the steam to further loosen the toxins from the individual. Swedana liquefies the toxins and increases the movement of toxins into the gastro-intestinal tract.

Main purification measures of Panchakarma Vamana: emesis therapy When there is congestion in the lungs causing repeated attacks of bronchitis, colds, cough or asthma, the Ayurvedic treatment is therapeutic vomiting Vamana - to eliminate the Kapha which is causing the excess mucus. Virechana: purgation therapy When excess bile, Pitta, is secreted and accumulated in the gall bladder, liver and small intestine, it tends to result in rashes, skin inflammation, acne, chronic attacks of fever, vomiting, nausea and jaundice. It relieves constipation, distention, chronic fever, cold, sexual disorders, kidney stones, heart pain, backache, sciatica and other pains in the joints. Many other Vata disorders such as arthritis, rheumatism, gout, muscle spasms and headaches may also be treated with Basti.
