Course Information Course Overview The Diabetes Center for Children at The Children s Hospital of Philadelphia is offering this course to school, homecare and case management nurses who have a child with diabetes in their care. This course is designed to provide a solid foundation in current diabetes management to nurses caring for school-aged children with diabetes. The skills necessary for selfmanagement of diabetes will be reviewed, in keeping with the family-management model of the Diabetes Center for Children. Topics for review will include treatment of type 1 and type 2 diabetes, blood glucose monitoring, meal planning and carbohydrate counting. Special emphasis will be given to the emerging epidemic of type 2 diabetes in youth and its causes and treatments. Treatment of hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia and ketonuria, management of psychological and family issues, meeting the needs of the child, and diabetes in the school setting will be discussed. General Information The conference will be held on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2014, on the first floor of the Leonard and Madlyn Abramson Pediatric Research Center at The Children s Hospital of Philadelphia. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. The $100 registration fee includes breakfast, breaks, lunch, syllabus materials and parking. Course Objectives Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to: 1. Describe acceptable diabetes control in the school-aged child. 2. Identify the tools necessary for successful diabetes management. 3. Identify the signs of hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia and ketonuria. 4. Calculate the carbohydrate content in foods. 5. Describe ways of enlisting under-involved parents in the plan for their child s diabetes care. 6. Locate community resources for families with psychosocial problems affecting diabetes control. 7. Identify treatment strategies for children with type 2 diabetes. Nursing Accreditation This activity has been submitted to the PA State Nurses Association for approval to award contact hours. PA State Nurses Association is accredited as an approver of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation.
