Activant Acclaim Using smit and p21adm AIX suite: course 3 of 3
Objectives Use smit p21 Including specific menus and their operation Access p21adm
SMIT An acronym for System Management Interface Tools IBM menu driven interface Makes running commands easier
SMIT Any user can use SMIT Only the root user has the authority to make configuration changes All users that use SMIT will have two files created for them smit.log smit.script
Using SMIT - Commands F1 F2 F3 F4 Displays help on the topic Refreshes the screen Cancels the current command Displays the list of possible values [Esc] [5] Erases contents of current field
Using SMIT - Commands F6 F7 F8 F9 F10 Displays the command that will be run Edits the contents of the current field Shows the fast path of the current menu Forks a new shell Exits smit all the way to the shell prompt [Enter] Runs the command
Using SMIT When in a SMIT menu, the following characters may appear: * + #
Using SMIT * Signifies that the field is required to have a value entered If present, * will appear on the left side of the screen
Using SMIT + Signifies that there is a pop-up menu available If present, + will be on the right side of the screen
Using SMIT # Signifies that the field requires a numeric value If present, # will be on the right side of the screen
Using SMIT This is the main menu of SMIT:
SMIT p21 Prophet 21 created SMIT menus called smit p21 smit p21 interface assists in making configuration changes in relation to p21 easier
SMIT p21 This is the main menu of smit p21:
Smit p21 Backup/Restore AIX Files Used to back up AIX system Should be performed once each week Cannot be performed with users on the system Minimum of three tapes in rotation To check last AIX back up date #ls -l.p21aixrest Be sure to verify that the back up was completed successfully!
Smit p21 Systems Used by p21 to create/delete multiple systems for use on one RISC box Systems are generally multiple companies or play systems
Smit p21 Port Manager Used to setup port and user mappings for the Prophet 21 application Port mappings Used when a terminal is connected directly to the system User mappings Used when the terminal is not real to the system, such as a network PC or facetterm user
Smit p21 Port Manager
Smit p21
Smit p21
Smit p21 Port number type Real is used for direct serial connection when mapping a TTY Effective is used for network, or virtual terminal connection when mapping a user
Smit p21 Device type determines the terminal or printer driver to be assigned to the TTY to properly control the device Default device type is 92 Interpreted by the kernel to indicate there is no device type set The system will use the TERM environment variable in smit tty
Smit p21 Default System Specifies the system to which the user will be defaulted in Prophet 21 application software
Smit p21 Member Systems Indicate to which systems (Companies) the user will be allowed access from this particular TTY
Smit p21 Enable Job Specifies whether the TTY will have JOB displayed on the terminal Typically set to yes Set to no when the TTY is a dedicated Prophet 21 printer
Smit p21 Tee Restrictions Set to yes to restrict the TTY from certain Prophet application software modules
Smit p21 Auto Boot Specifies whether the TTY will automatically boot to JOB or allow one to login to AIX Yes boots to JOB No boots to AIX login
Smit p21 Modem Indicates that a dial up modem is attached to the TTY Commonly used for EDI, ON-SITE
Smit p21 Port Description Informational field used to help administrator keep track of their ports and users Keep current at all times!
Smit p21 Creating network users Network users need to be mapped effectively to be able to access p21 databases Must be logged in as root to make the mappings
Smit p21
Smit p21
Smit p21
Smit p21 Insert AIX username P21 port number Change to effective
Smit tty Smit tty is used to set terminal type variables #smit tty
Smit tty
P21adm Created to to make some aspects of AIX easier to manage Only the root user will have all the system options Regular users will get two options Print/Show List of TTYs Print/show Information on an AIX Command
P21adm This is the main menu of p21adm:
P21adm Reset a TTY Good for fixing port lockups It runs three commands pdisable tty x clocal -flow -flush /dev/tty x penable tty x
P21adm
P21adm TTY Editor Allows you to quickly configure ports Does features included in smit tty smit p21
P21adm
P21adm
P21adm Print Queue Administrator Several functions for administering AIX print queues Lists all queued jobs Brings a print queue UP Brings a print queue DOWN Clears all jobs out of a print queue
P21adm
P21adm
P21adm Add/Edit User List Create new users as well as editing existing users Allows mapping to effective port Ability to set up a user to autoboot to Facetterm
P21adm
P21adm After typing l to list the following screen appears:
P21adm Print/Show System HOGS View all processes on the system that are considered a hog A process that takes up more then.5 % of the CPU usage Very useful in finding out why the system is running slow Just because a process appears on the list, not mean that it is a problem! does
P21adm This is a sample output:
P21adm Print/Show TTYs Permits viewing of attributes of one or all TTYs Very useful in port troubleshooting Uses the lstty command to show all TTYs
P21adm
P21adm
P21adm Print/Show System Configuration Provides a snapshot of your system Included in the report: Hard Drives Total/Free space Volume group assigned Tape Drives Ports SCSI mapping/description Output from lstty command
P21adm Print/Show System Configuration AIX Printers SCSI Mapping/description Prophet 21 Logical Volumes Listed by volume group AIX File Systems Listed by volume group Licenses Prophet 21 AIX
P21adm Print/Show System Configuration Software Installed Third Party packages Progress Facetterm IQ Corvu Vsifax
P21adm Print/Show Information on an AIX Command Shows the manual pages for an AIX command Uses the AIX man command
P21adm Print/Show Information on an AIX Command
