A flu patient often feels sick for a week or more before getting better. Many people get yearly flu shots to stay healthy. Not that long ago, the flu was a dangerous disease. In fact, the flu killed more people in one year than the Black Plague did in the 1300s. There are many different kinds of flu. The Spanish Flu was one very deadly strain. In 1918 and 1919, the Spanish Flu killed more than 20 million people around the world. Many were between the ages of 20 and 40. The flu struck first in Spain. War helped to spread the disease. Soldiers carried it across Europe during World War I. The Spanish Flu began with a high fever, coughing, and sneezing. Then victims became very weak. Their lungs filled with fluid. They could not breathe. Many victims died within three days. During World War I, the Spanish Flu killed more than 40,000 American soldiers. That is nearly as many as the number of troops killed in action. Some of the soldiers who returned to the United States brought the disease back with them. Soon people throughout the country were getting sick. At the time, no one knew what made the flu spread. Luckily, the Spanish Flu died out after 18 months. Since 1918, scientists have learned how the flu spreads. Vaccines now help to prevent many strains of flu. However, new forms of this disease still occur.

They caught a disease called cholera. Many people also died. Back then, no one knew what caused cholera. Also, there was no medicine to stop it. A scientist named John Snow had an idea. He used a map of the city of London. He marked the address of each person who died. Some streets on the map showed many deaths. Other streets showed few deaths. On one side of one London street, 500 people had died in just 10 days. How did that happen? The map helped Snow discover the answer. People on the side of the street where so many had died got water from a pump. The other side of the street got water from a different pump. John Snow turned off the water pump for the sick side of the street. The cholera came to an end. Snow learned that cholera comes from germs in water.
