Community Dental Service Our aims l To provide a specialised referral service for patients who have genuine difficulties in obtaining care from local family dentists l To deliver oral health promotion programmes for priority groups l To carry out surveys which measure the dental health of groups within the population as required by the Commissioners and the Department of Health l To work in partnership with the University of Sheffield in the training of student dentists and hygiene/therapy students Our service is staffed by dentists, dental nurses, oral health promotion workers and admin staff who are committed to delivering a good quality service. Dental disease, such as tooth decay and gum disease can largely be prevented. However this depends on a partnership between dental staff, other health workers, patient and parent/carer. We are here to help you achieve and maintain a healthy mouth through treatment, support and advice. Service manager Mrs Ranee Townsend Telephone 01709 423110 3

Community Dental Service What do we provide? l Dental advice and treatment for: - Children with specialised treatment needs l Specific groups of adults which include: - Adults with learning difficulties - Adults with complex physical disabilities - Adults with severe mental health problems l Home visits for patients who are unable to leave their home for medical/mobility reasons. However there is only a limited amount of dental treatment that can be carried out in a patient s home l A hospital-based general anaesthetic service for patients with disabilities for whom treatment in the conventional way is difficult l Information and advice on how to prevent dental problems on a one-to-one basis l Oral health/food related programmes for targeted groups e.g. children s centres, community groups and schools l Training of other health care workers, teachers and carers in oral health promotion l Dental screening in special schools, day centres for people with learning difficulties and residential homes for older people NHS dental charges will apply for all patients who are not exempt. Dental staff will inform you of the current NHS charge for your dental treatment where appropriate. 4

Community Dental Service Referrals Referrals to the Community Dental Service can be made by: l Your dentist l Your doctor l Health visitor, district nurse and any other health worker l Social Services or voluntary agency l Hospital People can refer themselves in certain circumstances. If you are unsure as to whether or not our service can provide your care, please contact the Dental Department at the Rotherham Community Health Centre. The length of dental care provided by the service varies with each patient. Some patients may attend for one course of treatment, while others may need to attend for continuing care. When we think the time is right to transfer your care we will discuss this with you. Your treatment may be provided by a student dentist or hygiene/therapy student. All students are closely supervised by a qualified dentist and their work is regularly checked. We will always seek your permission first if your treatment is to be carried out by a student. Help us to help you by l Brushing morning and night with fluoride toothpaste l Keeping sugary foods and drinks (biscuits, cakes, sweets. Pop and cordials to meal times) l Dried fruits and fruit juice are healthy options but because of their suger content should be kept to mealtimes l Visiting your dentist regularly 5
