4.4: Overview of Cellular Respiration Key idea: The overall process of cellular respiration converts sugar into ATP using oxygen.

Recall Autotrophs = organisms that can produce their own energy Plants use photosynthesis to create sugars (stored energy)

Recall Heterotrophs = organisms that must consume to obtain energy Humans eat plants, and use their sugars to make ATP Which cell organelle makes ATP?

Mitochondria

Cellular Respiration: Cellular respiration (CR) = Breaks down glucose in mitochondria to make ATP Aerobic process = oxygen required to occur

Steps Glycolysis (pre-step) 1. Krebs/Citric Acid Cycle 2. Electron Transport Chain

Steps (write on the side) Glycolysis (must occur before CR) Anaerobic (no O 2 needed) Occurs in cytoplasm Breaks apart glucose to make reactants for CR 1. Krebs/Citric Acid Cycle 2. Electron Transport Chain

Glycolysis Steps 1. Krebs/Citric Acid Cycle Aerobic Occurs in matrix (fluid) Releases CO 2 & creates energy carriers Electron Transport Chain

Glycolysis Steps 1. Krebs/Citric Acid Cycle 2. Electron Transport Chain Aerobic Occurs in inner membrane Energy carriers used to create LOTS OF ATP! O 2 converted to H 2 O

Pair-Share-Respond 1. In which organelle does cellular respiration occur? 2. What step must occur BEFORE cellular respiration? 3. List the two steps of cellular respiration and where they occur. 4. Distinguish between the terms aerobic and anaerobic

4.5: Cellular Respiration in Detail Key idea: The overall process of cellular respiration converts sugar into ATP using oxygen.

Recall

Steps Glycolysis (pre-step) 1. Krebs/Citric Acid Cycle 2. Electron Transport Chain

Glycolysis:

Stage 1: Krebs/Citric Acid Cycle Goal: Rearrange carbon molecules until energy-carrying molecules (NADH and FADH 2 ) are created

1. 3-carbon molecule broken down; CO 2 released

2. 2-carbon molecule gets 4 more carbons

3. Citric acid (6 carbon molecule) formed

4. Citric acid broken down; NADH made; CO 2 released

5. Break down continues; NADH and ATP made; CO 2 released

6. Starting molecule regenerated (cycle), NADH & FADH 2 made

Electron Transport Chain

Electron Transport Chain Goal: Use e - s from NADH and FADH 2 to make ATP

1. Energized e - s removed from NADH & FADH 2

2. e - s use their energy to pump H + s across membrane

3. H + ions flow through ATP synthase to make lots of ATP!!

4. Oxygen s role in CR O 2 + e - s + H + s H 2 O

Pair-Share-Respond 1. What is the goal of the Krebs/ Citric Acid cycle? 2. What waste product is released in the cycle? 3. What are the energy-carrying molecules called? 4. What is the goal of the electron transport chain? 5. What is made in the ETC?
