Featured Topic: Boswellia for IBS (4 slides)
IBS and 5-LOX Question: What do diseases including asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, and irritable bowel (IBS) have in common? Answer: Inflammation. Especially inflammation from compounds called leukotrienes produced by the enzyme 5-LOX (5-lipoxygenase) Clinical trial: Inflammatory leukotriene levels were almost 45% higher in women with IBS than healthy women in the control group
What stops 5-LOX? If IBS is caused by inflammation, why don t doctors prescribe NSAIDS (like Tylenol) to treat it? Because NSAIDS do NOT stop 5-LOX inflammation Boswellia (Boswellia serrata) is a natural antiinflammatory that acts on the 5-LOX pathway without adverse effects This makes boswellia ideal for treating diseases associated with inflammatory leukotrienes and 5-LOX activity Clinical trials show that 60-70% of people using boswellia will experience a reduction in their symptoms (arthritis, colitis, asthma, ulcerative colitis, IBS, and more)
Boswellia for IBS 71 people with IBS were randomized to receive antispasmodic drug treatment when needed, or boswellia extract (250 mg) daily for four weeks Boswellia participants could also use rescue medications if symptoms got worse IBS symptoms (abdominal pain, changes in bowel movements, cramping) were evaluated for a week before starting the trial and during week 4 of the trial Results: The number of people with active symptoms declined by 80% in the boswellia group versus 50-60% of patients in the drug group 13% of the drug group needed additional medical treatment, versus 8% in the boswellia group 28% of the drug treatment group experienced side effects versus only 8% in the boswellia group who experienced mild constipation
Essential oils Coriander: reduces overgrowth of harmful bacteria in the intestines Fennel: normalizes digestion and reduces oxidative stress and damage to the intestinal lining Caraway: relaxes smooth muscle cells in the intestines, relieves gas and bloating Peppermint: many studies on IBS; particularly effective for abdominal pain - reduced abdominal pain by 20% in a recent clinical study
How to use boswellia for IBS The beneficial activity of boswellia is strongly associated with the key compounds, boswellic acids and AKBA However, one specific boswellic acid beta boswellic acid actually CAUSES inflammation, it doesn t reduce it Look for boswellia extracts which are labeled to contain less than 5% beta boswellic acids and at least 10% AKBA the most powerful compound in boswellia Take in combination with coriander, fennel, caraway and peppermint essential oils: 400 mg, two or three times daily
Dairy for Diabetes Prevention (1 slide)
Increased dairy intake prevents diabetes Researchers followed 3,000 people for 12 years, tracking their dairy consumption and risk of diabetes Of the patients who were healthy with no diabetes or prediabetes at the beginning of the study, 48% had developed prediabetes by study end In this group, dairy consumption resulted in a 39% decrease in prediabetes risk Of the patients who had prediabetes at the beginning of the study, approximately 20% developed type 2 diabetes For this group, diets that included full-fat dairy and cheese were associated with up to a 70% reduction in risk of type 2 diabetes A separate study looking a milk consumption found that daily milk intake was associated with a 12% decreased risk of type 2 diabetes
3 New Studies on the Health Benefits of Olives and Olive Oil (3 slides)
Olive oil is antidiabetic Researchers tested a compound from olive leaves called oleuropein, and found two ways it prevents diabetes #1: oleuropein helps the body secrete more insulin #2: oleuropein detoxifies a molecule (amylin) that is overproduced in the early stages of type 2 diabetes, and forms harmful deposits in the pancreas Regular intake of olive oil has been shown to reduce risk of type 2 diabetes by 16%, and ehttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2839 4365
Olive oil promotes weight loss Researchers gave 41 overweight women a controlled diet, with half receiving a high fat breakfast with soybean oil, and half receiving extra virgin olive oil with their breakfast After 9 weeks, the group receiving extra virgin olive oil Lost 80% more fat than the soybean oil group Had a 5 point decline in blood pressure, versus a slight increase in blood pressure in the soybean oil group
Olive oil polyphenols reduce arterial stiffness 11 day study of 36 otherwise healthy people with beginnings of arterial stiffness Arterial stiffness = rigid blood vessels Risk factor for high blood pressure, heart attack, and stroke Received olive fruit extract (500 mg) or placebo Olive group experienced in just 11 days: Almost 20% reduction in arterial stiffness 21% decrease in triglyceride levels 11% increase in energy LOOK FOR: 160 mg of olive leaf and fruit extract, and olive fruit oil concentrate, daily
Vitamin D and the MS (multiple sclerosis) connection (1 slide)
Vitamin D deficiency linked to Multiple Sclerosis MS is a neurological disease involving the immune system that leads to degeneration of the central nervous system The cause is not know, but women are 2-3 times more likely to have MS than men Researchers in Finland recently looked at vitamin D blood test results (normal, insufficient, and deficient) from over 800,000 women, and then looked at how many went on to be diagnosed with MS over the next 9 years Results: Women deficient in vitamin D were 43% more likely to have MD versus women with normal D levels, and 27% more likely to have MS than women with insufficient vitamin D levels With each significant increase (50 nanomoles per liter) the risk of MS decreased 39% Conclusion: correcting vitamin D deficiency in young and middle-aged women can significantly decrease future risk of MS
Boost Thyroid Function with Ashwagandha (1 slide)
Ashwagandha normalizes thyroid hormones Fifty people with high TSH levels (indication of underactive thyroid) and low T4 Received 600 mg of a specialized ashwagandha root extract (KSM-66) or placebo for 8 weeks Result: ashwagandha group experienced 19% improvement in TSH 45% improvement in T4 21% improvement in T3 Researchers noted that thyroid hormone levels effectively returned to the normal range 1 person in the ashwagandha group and 3 people in the placebo group reported mild and temporary adverse effects For more on ashwagandha, listen to the Burnout webinar on the Terry Talks Nutrition YouTube channel find the link at TerryTalksNutrition.com/webinars
