What Can I Do Ahead of Time? Many students want to know what can be completed prior to notification of acceptance into the program. Spreading some of the following out, will help with finances. CPR certification and Immunizations It is also a good idea to have these current and have copies readily available. You will be required to submit documentation of your immunizations and CPR at the start of the 1 st semester of the program.
CPR Everyone Should Be Certified!!!!!! All Health Sciences programs require CPR through American Heart Association and MUST be Health Care Provider Adult and Child CPR The College now has an AHA training center through CCE. If you are in need of a class, please go to the following link: https://www.sccsc.edu/aha/ Click on View Current Class. You can register online or you can call 864-592-4900 CPR certification is good for 2 years
Immunizations All Health Sciences Programs at SCC require the same immunizations. Many immunizations were obtained as a child, and it just requires that you obtain your immunization records. It is a good time to start now, gathering this information. If you have not received one of the required immunizations, you may want to get a head start as there are multiple shots and several weeks between them.
Immunizations (cont) MMR (Measles, Mumps & Ruebella) Should have received as a child in 2 separate doses If you cannot find your immunizations, have a TITER drawn first (it s cheaper). If you are immune to all 3, then you will not require a booster. If the TITER results show that you are not immune to 1 or more, than you will require the booster. Some International students only received immunization for Measles and Mumps and NOT Ruebella. This means, these students will REQUIRE the MMR immunization.
Immunizations (cont) Varicella Vaccine against Chicken Pox This was administered in 2 doses 4 weeks apart starting in 1995. If you never received the vaccine, have a TITER drawn first. If you are immune, you are fine. If you are NOT immune, you will be required to receive the entire vaccine 2 doses 4 weeks apart. DO NOT wait until the last minute to have this immunization administered If you were born in the US after 1995, you should have received this vaccine as a child.
Immunizations (cont) Tetanus (Td) Booster booster is required every 10 years Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) this is a 1 time immunization as an adult followed by an every 10 year Td booster. It is HIGHLY recommended that health care students receive this immunization. If Td is within date, you are NOT required to receive the Tdap. Flu Vaccine All Health Sciences students are required to obtain a flu vaccine. New flu vaccines are available in late August or early September. They are only good for the current flu season.
Immunizations (cont) PPD Tuberculin Skin Test If you are currently working in a health care environment, then all that is required is your yearly, 1-step PPD result If you have NEVER had a PPD, you will be required to complete a 2-step PPD A subsequent yearly PPD will be required for the department. Please note that International students often have a positive skin test, and are required to have a chest x-ray and/or written documentation from their healthcare provider that there is NO active disease. This will also be required to be updated on a yearly basis.
