SAWABE Hitomi (Ms.) Profile Born in 1952 in Shizuoka Prefecture, the midland of Japan. Currently living in Tokyo. Studied at Waseda University Graduate School. A nonfiction writer, concerned mainly with biographies. Yuriko, dosvidania! The adolescence of Yuasa Yoshiko (1990) is my masterpiece. In the process of publishing my latest book titled An Introduction to OIRAKU (enjoyable ageing) Life (2010) as an older-citizen-to-be, I became convinced that housing, money, and communication are the three key elements that most older people require to feel relaxed about their ageing (in addition, needless to say, to coming to terms with the fact that we are all mortal). Above all, the biggest theme of OIRAKU (enjoyable ageing) Life is being able to decide where, how and with whom to live. In order to be able to make these decisions for oneself, one needs to communicate with both oneself and others. In an attempt to make this possible for many people, I have been working as a facilitator in workshops to write self-history/herstory which helps prepare oneself for the next steps, as well as in assertiveness training to communicate with others frankly. I am very happy to have this opportunity, at this Symposium, to introduce a Japanese model case of older people s housing run autonomously by the residents.
