FEATURED SPEAKERS Nicholas Hart, MB, BS, BSc, MRCP, PhD, FFICM Clinical & Academic Director, Lane Fox Respiratory Services, St Thomas Hospital, London Professor in Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Lane Fox Clinical Respiratory Physiology Centre, School of Basic and Biomedical Sciences, Kings College London Director of Research Delivery, Guys and St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust, London Joint Editor-in-Chief, THORAX, International Journal of Respiratory, Sleep and Critical Care Medicine Professor Hart was appointed as the Clinical Director of the Lane Fox Respiratory Service in 2012, which is an internationally recognised weaning, rehabilitation and home mechanical ventilation service. It is the largest weaning and rehabilitation service in the UK. Professor Hart s research is focused on improving quality of life and reducing hospital admission in patients with chronic respiratory disease and post critical illness. Professor Hart established the Lane Fox Clinical Respiratory Physiology Research Centre in 2007 and he has developed a programme of translational physiological research focused on: Admission Prevention In COPD Muscle Wasting Prevention During Critical illness Improving Outcome in Sleep Disordered Breathing and Chronic Respiratory Failure Beverly Orser, MD, PhD, FRCPC, FCAHS Professor of Anesthesia and Physiology, University of Toronto Director of Research, Department of Anesthesia, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre Canada Research Chair in Anesthesia (2004-14) Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences Dr. Orser is the Chair of the Department of Anesthesia, and a Professor of Anesthesia and Physiology at the University of Toronto. She is a practicing anesthesiologist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Toronto, Canada. Her research seeks to understand how general anesthetic drugs depress brain function, what side effects are caused by these drugs, and how these side effects can be mitigated. Her studies have identified the unique properties and therapeutic potential of extrasynaptic GABAA receptors in health and disease. Her research and leadership contributions have been recognized by the Gold Medal from the Canadian Anesthesiologists Society (2017), the Peter Dresel Award in Pharmacology from Dalhousie University (2017), the first Canada Research Chair awarded to an anesthesiologist (2003), the first Frontiers in Anesthesia Research Award from the International Anesthesia Research Society (1995), and recognition awards from the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists and the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland. She was inducted as a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences in 2013. 4
