Pre-op diets before gallbladder surgery Patient information Part of: South Tyneside and Sunderland Healthcare Group

Introduction: You are on the waiting list for gallbladder surgery. Prior to your operation it is important to follow a restricted diet. This must be followed for 10 days prior to your surgery. The purpose of the diet is to reduce the size of your liver. This is very important as it will make your operation safer. If you do not follow the advice your operation may be more difficult 2

Diet options Diet one (milk) Unless you are diabetic this is the diet you are encouraged to follow. It is based on milk, yoghurt and fruit and is the best diet for reducing the size of your liver. Diet two (alternative) This diet should be followed if you are a diabetic and you are managing it through your diet or with medication. If you are allergic to or dislike milk, you may also follow this diet. Diet three (diabetic on insulin) This is suitable for patients who are diabetic on insulin. You may also need to adjust your insulin intake. You should discuss this with your GP or Diabetic nurse You must follow only one of the above diets. You cannot combine or alternate between the diets. If you are unsure about which diet to follow or have any questions, please contact one of the dietitians on 0191 4041084. 3
