Use your professional skills to serve a community. Practice your profession with integrity, and inspire others to behave ethically through your own words and actions. Help a young person achieve his or her career aspirations. Guide and encourage others in their professional development. If you do any of these things, you are performing vocational service. And if vocational service motivates and energizes you, then you re in the right place, because vocational service is the very essence of Rotary. IS YOUR CLUB MAKING A DIFFERENCE? Dear Rotarians, We have only six months left to achieve the goals we have set for 2017-2018. I ask you and especially the club board to check what progress the club has made in the past 6 months. Which goals have been achieved, which have not, why not, is an adjustment required? Questions that can be addressed during a club assembly. Over the next six months, the district will put even more emphasis on realizing our goals. One of these goals to significantly increase the number of clubs that achieve the Rotary (Presidential) Citation. I am convinced that we can do much better and we should. The Rotary Citation is not just a prize, it is a recognition of the Rotary International President to a rotary club that is vibrant, that has worked in 2017-2018 on strengthening the club, on increasing humanitarian service to the local and / or the world community, on strengthening the Rotary Foundation and on improving communication with the community and that has the right to say I am a true Rotary Club, one that indeed serves humanity and contributes to Rotary: Making A Difference. Take a look at the next page you will find a report per 1 January 2018 of the progress clubs have made achieving the Rotary Citation. The club will receive the Rotary Citation when 4 out of 4 categories of activities is achieved. There are 34 clubs (48%) that have achieved ZERO categories. Yes, we have to do a much better job if want to be a district that is making a difference. BE HAPPY, LET S SERVE HUMANITY AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN 2018. District Governor Waddy Sowma 3

GLOBAL GRANT PROJECT PERISUR Organizations join forces against teenage pregnancy Under the theme 'Conscious Pregnant', the Lobi Foundation and Perisur Foundation (Perinatal Interventions Suriname) have joined forces with the support of the Rotary Club Paramaribo Residence (RCPR) to combat teenage pregnancy. From 15-22 December, internal sessions were held for the development of an interactive educational program. This program promotes the making of well-considered choices by students, among others, as part of the 'Perisur Rotary Global Grant' project. The sessions were led by Inger Aalhuizen, midwifery policy officer at the Royal Dutch Organization of Obstetricians (KNOV) and member of the advisory group Perisur and Kenneth Slijngard, physician at Lobi Foundation. The sessions were attended by trainers and aspiring trainers from Lobi, members of the juvenile arm of Lobi and midwives from Perisur. In Suriname, an average of 10,000 births take place annually, 18% of which are from teenage mothers (younger than 20 years). One in five babies is born with complications such as, preterm birth, low birth weight or stillbirth. The risk of these unfavorable birth outcomes is much greater among teenage mothers. For the first time seeing and holding your child is a very beautiful and special moment. The joy can only increase if the child is also healthy and has good development opportunities. That is why parenting also brings a lot of responsibilities. All kinds of risks are still present before, during and after the pregnancy. Issues such as - how does your life look like at that moment and how it could change, are you ready for parenthood, have you found the right partner, do you have sufficient financial resources for the care of a child, shelter - all of them affect a conscious pregnancy. The first weeks of pregnancy and even well before that, are very crucial for a healthy baby. Having the baby grow in good conditions starts from the moment you decide that you want a child or have sex without contraception (pill, contraceptive, condom or spiral). Perisur and Lobi therefore focus on becoming pregnant, planning healthy pregnancies or postponing a pregnancy to increase the chances of a healthy start for a child. The Perisur Foundation, an initiative of the Sint Vincentius Hospital and the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO Healthy Living) in Leiden, focuses on improving the care for pregnant women and their babies in Suriname. Lobi Foundation is committed to a wide range of preventive healthcare services including Family Planning, the prevention of Sexually Transmitted Infections, Cancer Prevention and Education and Training. "We found a good dynamic partner at the Lobi Foundation," says Ashna Hindori-Mohangoo, project leader Perisur. The Rotary Club Paramaribo Residence strives to be a dynamic, action-oriented service organization, whose contributions improve life in communities inside and outside Suriname. During a project period of one year, with the support of Perisur, TNO, KNOV and Lobi Foundation, the interactive educational program will be further developed and rolled out, aimed at high school students and young women in areas with unfavorable birth results. The topics that are discussed are Contraception, STDs, Sexual Resilience and Healthy Pregnancy. The intention is to start the sessions with young people in March 2018. The project will last until December 2018 and will be executed with funds from The Rotary Foundation through the intervention of Rotary Club Leiden and Rotary Club Paramaribo Residence. 6
2018-19 RI PRESIDENT BARRY RASSIN 2018-19 RI President Barry Rassin wants Rotary members to Be the Inspiration. Rotary International President-elect Barry Rassin laid out his vision for the future of the organization on Sunday, calling on leaders to work for a sustainable future and to inspire Rotarians and the community at large. Rassin, a member of the Rotary Club of East Nassau, New Providence, Bahamas, unveiled the 2018-19 presidential theme, Be the Inspiration, to incoming district governors at Rotary s International Assembly in San Diego, California, USA. I want you to inspire in your clubs, your Rotarians, that desire for something greater. The drive to do more, to be more, to create something that will live beyond each of us. Rassin stressed the power of Rotary s new vision statement, Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves. This describes the Rotary that leaders must help build, he said. To achieve this vision, the president-elect said, Rotarians must take care of the organization: We are a membership organization first. And if we want to be able to serve, if we want to succeed in our goals we have to take care of our members first. Rassin asked the incoming district governors to inspire the club presidents, and the Rotarians in your districts, to want to change. To want to do more. To want to reach their own potential. It s your job to motivate them and help them find their own way forward. https://www.rotary.org/en/rotary-international-president-rassin-theme-2018 7
