Unit 4: Sensation and Perception

Sensation a process by which our sensory receptors and nervous system receive and represent stimulus (or physical) energy and encode it as neural signals. Perception a process of organizing and interpreting sensory information, enabling us to recognize meaningful objects and events Refers to how we select, organize & interpret information. Making sense of raw energy received.

Our sensory and perceptual processes work together to help us sort out complex processes

Sensation Bottom-Up Processing analysis that begins with the sense receptors and works up to the brain s integration of sensory information Top-Down Processing information processing guided by higher-level mental processes as when we construct perceptions drawing on our experience and expectations.

Selective Attention The focusing of conscious awareness on a particular stimulus. An example of selective attention is: Cocktail Party Effect: ability to listen to one voice among many to pay attention despite distractions.

Sensation- Thresholds The Absolute Threshold minimum stimulation needed to detect a particular stimulus 50% of the time. Difference Threshold minimum difference between two stimuli required for detection 50% of the time Or also called the JND just noticeable difference (JND)

Standard absolute thresholds have been determined for each of our senses. Vision-a candle flame seen at 30 miles on a clear night. Hearing-a tick of a watch under quiet conditions at 20 feet away. Taste-one teaspoon of sugar in 2 gallons of water. Smell-one drop of perfume diffused in a 3 bedroom apartment Touch-a bee s wing falling on your cheek from 1 centimeter above.

Sensation- Thresholds Signal Detection Theory predicts how and when we detect the presence of a faint stimulus (signal) amid background stimulation (noise) assumes that there is no single absolute threshold Signal detection depends partly on person s experience expectations motivation level of fatigue

Sensory Adaptation Diminished sensitivity as a consequence of constant stimulation. It is the gradual loss of attention to unneeded sensory information. It enables us to focus on important changes in our environment. What we sense is determined by the attention or what we focus on perceiving. Example: socks, Band-Aid

Perception Gestalt an organized whole. Gestalt psychologists emphasized our tendency to integrate pieces of information into meaningful wholes

Form Perception Figure and Ground Figure-ground the organization of the visual field into objects (the figures) that stand out from their surroundings (the ground).

Form Perception Grouping

Depth perception the ability to see objects in three dimensions although the images that strike the retina are two-dimensional; allows us to judge distance. Visual-cliff a laboratory device for testing depth perception in infants and young animals.

Vision

Vision Transduction - conversion of one form of energy into another. Wavelength - the distance from the peak of one light or sound wave to the peak of the next. Hue (color) - the dimension of color that is determined by the wavelength of light Intensity - the amount of energy in a light or sound wave, which we perceive as brightness or loudness

Vision- Physical Properties of Waves Short wavelength=high frequency (bluish colors, high-pitched sounds) Great amplitude (bright colors, loud sounds) Long wavelength=low frequency (reddish colors, low-pitched sounds) Small amplitude (dull colors, soft sounds)

How does it work?? #1 - the reflected light first enters the cornea, which is a protective covering. The cornea helps to focus the light. #2. The light then goes through the pupil. The pupil works like the shutter of a camera. #3 The muscles that control the pupil are called the iris, and they dilate it or open it to let in more light and make it smaller to let in less light. As the light passes through the lens, the image is flipped upside down and inverted. #4 The focused inverted image projects on to the retina, which is like a screen on the back of your eye. The retina contains receptor rods & cones that begin the processing of visual information. On this screen are specialized neurons that are activated by the different wavelengths of light.

Vision Acuity- the sharpness of vision Nearsightedness- condition in which nearby objects are seen more clearly than distant objects because distant objects in front of retina Farsightedness- condition in which faraway objects are seen more clearly than near objects because the image of near objects is focused behind retina

Visual Information Processing Parallel Processing simultaneous processing of several aspects of a problem simultaneously

Visual Information Processing Young-Helmholtz Three-Color Theory the theory that the retina contains three different color receptors one most sensitive to red, one to green, one to blue

Opponent-process theory the theory that opposing retinal processes (red-green, yellow-blue, white-black) enable color vision. For example, some cells are stimulated by green and inhibited by red; others are stimulated by red and inhibited by green.

Binocular Cues We need both of our eyes to use these cues. Retinal Disparity -as an object comes closer to us, the differences in images between our eyes becomes greater. Convergence - as an object comes closer our eyes have to come together to keep focused on the object.

Hearing

Audition Audition the sense of hearing Frequency the number of complete wavelengths that pass a point in a given time Pitch a tone s highness or lowness depends on frequency

Outer Ear - Ear -Auditory canal -Ear drum Middle Ear- - Hammer, anvil, stirrup Inner Ear -Oval window -Cochlea Basilar membrane -Auditory nerve -Auditory cortex

Audition Place Theory the theory that links the pitch we hear with the place where the cochlea s membrane is stimulated Frequency Theory the theory that the rate of nerve impulses traveling up the auditory nerve matches the frequency of a tone, thus enabling us to sense its pitch
