HI AND THANKS If you re anything like me, your training is well underway for the epic journey we re about to undertake together on The Captain s Ride from Sydney to Byron Bay. Thank you for committing to fundraising for the SWF. We are here to offer you our support with your fundraising activities, from handy tips and ideas as well as a fundraising one-pager you can forward on to prospective sponsors, family and friends which explains the event and the cause. The Steve Waugh Foundation is about Strength of Character. It s at the core of what we do, from the people we support to the people who support us. On behalf of the young people and families we support, thank you.
START FUNDRAISING STEP 1: CREATE YOUR PROFILE The SWF has it s own fundraising platform from which to create and manage your own personal fundraising profile. It s really simple to set up and a great tool to help you fundraise. Visit stevewaughfoundation.com.au/thecaptains-ride then click on FUNDRAISE and follow the steps on how to set up your profile. You can personalise your profile with images and information about yourself. STEP 2: START PLANNING Its important to plan how you will fundraise. If you are planning an event, think about when, where and who to invite. You must seek approval from SWF to host your event and to use our logo. Simply download our Fundraising Event Form, complete, sign and return to us to get started.
FUNDRAISING TIPS GET SHARING Social Media is one of the quickest and easiest ways to raise funds. Post your fundraising link to Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, to encourage your friends, family, your boss and colleagues to donate online. Also use your social media profile to promote your fundraising events. WORKPLACE GIFT MATCHING Many companies offer to match donations raised by staff members for approved charities like the SWF. Why not approach your company or another local business to ask if they could consider making a commitment to gift-match what you raise. COMMUNITY FUNDRAISING There are all sorts of ways you can fundraise withing your community - garage sales, car wash, the Bunnings BBQ. Be sure to see the required permission from land owners or council. WORKPLACE EVENTS Hold a fundraiser at your workplace where donations can be made directly to your fundraising profile or by cash on the day. Organise a Morning Tea, Casual Day or Office BBQ, for example. HOST AN EVENT There are many different fundraising events that you could organise to reach your goal, such as:- Trivia Night Cocktail Party Movie Night Golf Day CAUSE RELATED MARKETING Negotiate with your employer or one of your local businesses to run a special promotion to drive sales, e.g., 50c from every cup of coffee sold during September is donated John Citizen who is raising funds for the Steve Waugh Foundation. CELEBRATION DONATION Casual Day Talent Contest Movie Night Wine Tasting In lieu of receiving gifts for celebrations such as a birthday, you could ask for a donation to your fundraising effort instead.
MEET TAMARA Age: 24 SWF has helped Tamara with funding for her wheelchair and physiotherapy. The fact so many families seek support from the Foundation highlights a broader systematic problem of resources and funding for rare diseases and disabilities. The Steve Waugh Foundation is doing something that directly and instantaneously betters these people s lives. I truly appreciate what the Foundation has done for me. I m able to continue my life without stresses of finding or raising considerable funding needed. Tamara has completed a university degree in architecture and will be starting an internship with an architecture firm this year.
MEDIA INFORMATION You may wish to the media to seek support from the community. We encourage you to approach your local media outlets to promote your fundraising activity. Contact SWF to get a copy of The Captain s Ride Media Release. A FEW TIPS Local newspapers are sometimes resource-poor therefore may not have a journalist or photographer available at the exact time you have specified you may need to be flexible to have them come along. Have a good quality photo available to give to the media as back up. Local newspapers are generally weekly publications therefore need about 1 2 weeks notice in order to plan the paper and make the news applicable. Conduct an interview - newspaper will probably want to conduct a short interview. Remember to talk from your own experience about why you re participating in the event, when it is and how the community can support you.
RENEE ELIADES Foundation Ambassador I agreed to be an Ambassador of the Foundation because I can understand how other families with children that have rare diseases and disabilities feel. I know how much help and support we all need! We just have to remind ourselves, we are rare but equal no matter what. The Steve Waugh Foundation has supported Renee in an ongoing capacity since 2007, providing portable oxygen cylinders every month so she can have a life outside her home; and further in 2012 with a lounge sofa bed with an extended piece specifically for Renee that accommodates her Bipap machine. We are rare but equal, no matter what. Renee
