Statement of Need: The field of onconephrology is a new subspecialty in nephrology that deals with cancer, chemotherapy and the kidney. There are novel treatment options available for many cancers, however, there are also novel renal toxicities associated with some of these agents. Complications to the kidney are important to recognize and need to be discussed in a formal setting. In addition, there have been major changes in diagnosis of paraprotein diseases and inclusion of MGUS and renal disease. Finally, diagnosis of atypical HUS and TMA has recently been recognized to respond to novel available agents that nephrologists and oncologists should incorporate into their care of patients with these issues. The didactic lectures and workshops will enable participants to refine their knowledge of novel cancer agents and their nephrotoxicites and learn about the novel agents available in treatment of TMAs and manage complications of cancer that affects the kidney. Program Objectives: All North Shore-LIJ Health System CME activities are intended to improve patient care, safety and outcomes. At the conclusion of this conference participants should be able to: SUMMARIZE common renal complications seen with cancer patients and develop an interdisciplinary strategy to the evaluation and treatment of these complications. RECOGNIZE and treat a nephrotoxicity associated with cancer (tumor lysis, electrolyte disorders) or with chemotherapy associated with cancer. DIAGNOSE the various forms of thrombotic microangiopathies and implement treatment strategies in a timely manner. RECOGNIZE and treat novel associations of monoclonal gammopathies of renal significance. Target Audience: Nephrologists, Hematologists, Oncologists, Physicians, Residents, Fellows, Medical Students and other Health Care Professionals including PAs, NPs and Nurses, involved in the care of patients with cancer and/or kidney diseases.
