FMD Vaccination and Post-Vaccination Studies in Myanmar Chantanee Buranathai OIE Asia pacific Inception Meeting of OIE/JTF Project for FMD Control in Asia, 13-14 December 2011
Constrains of the FMD control in East Asia and Expected Outcome of the Project Final Goal: To strengthen prevention and control measures against FMD in Asia Constraints Lack of the Information Sharing - Out break information - National strategy and control measure - Virus information - Scientific information Eligible countries: Japan, Korea RO, PR China, Mongolia, Hong Kong, Chinese Taipei Expected Outcome of the Project Strengthen Information sharing Annual meeting for sharing the information Establish Scientific Net work Exchange the scientific information Develop the Regional Roadmap and cooperation Analyze National strategy in each countries Develop the regional cooperation and the Regional Roadmap Regional Level Constraints Lack of the Regional Strategy - Long term strategy - Middle term strategy - Lack of the cooperation within the region - Border control Unknown Source of infection - Diagnosis technique - Capacity of Laboratory staff Strengthen the capacity of diagnosis for FMD Training the lab staff to improve the diagnosis of FMD Improve Control measure (technical and institutional ) Epidemiological study to identify the risk factors Poor Control Measures - Lack of the epidemiological study - Field study/ investigation National Level Background of the Project
Achievement 4 : Improve the FMD control Objectives: measures in the region To assist regional members to improve FMD control measures by providing technical and nontechnical supports To share and efficiently mobilize resource to enhance regional and global control of FMD
III. Country specific activity 1. Upon request of MC and supporting countries, the technical assistance could be provided (country-specific training and field study). 2. In some cases, mission team may be dispatched for feasibility study
Proposal: FMD Vaccination and Post- Vaccination Studied in Myanmar
Justification LBVD submit proposal to MAFF in 2008, 2009 to accept FMD vaccine from MAFF Myanmar is good candidate for strategic control of FMD Capacity for FMD diagnosis is sufficient FMD vaccination in Myanmar will contribute to FMD Roadmap for Asia
Objectives FMD vaccination and post vaccination studies will be used as a model of FMD vaccination for further implementation in other member countries Scientific information gained from the studies will contribute to FMD prevention and control in Asia and benefit scientific community To share and efficiently mobilize resource to enhance regional and global control of FMD
Early Activities Mission team for project formulation in Myanmar, October 2011 to discuss with LBVD on Necessary arrangement for FMD vaccination Field Study Other on going projects to avoid duplication Visit a few pilot sites proposed for vaccination Visit FMD Laboratory center and discuss laboratory works
DG Office In Nay Pyi Taw Lewe Township Vet Office Studied Farm
Field Work in Myanmar Target site : Lewe township, Nay Pyi Taw
Targeted Site Sagaing Khin Oo Monywa Pyinmana Magway Magway Lewe Nay Pyi Taw
Field Work in Myanmar Target site : Lewe township, Nay Pyi Taw Retionale : Lewe Township is in the Livestock Production Zone It receives animals from Magway. The nearby, Magway township, in Magway Division, was infected in 2009 and Magway Division is infected area for many years before.
Field Work in Myanmar Target animals : Buffaloes and cattle in Lewe township Population (cattle and buffaloes): 126, 380 70 % population = 88,000 80% population = 101,104 FMD outbreaks 2003, 2007, 2009 Type of virus O There is one cattle market Lewe Tahrwithhi
Cattle Market in Myanmar Lewe Tharwithhi Cattle Market
Activities 1: Vaccination 200,000 doses of FMD vaccine, 6 PD50, Type O (Manisa), Merial Company (Expired on 20 November 2011) 100, 000 doses for first shot 100,00 doses for booster shot, one month later Vaccination coverage is 70 80% of cattle and buffaloes population in Lewe Township
Activities 1: Vaccination (cont.) History record, vaccination record will be documented and reported Public awareness material on FMD prevention and control will be distributed for the participating farmers
Activities 2: Post-vaccination studies Studied Groups : Among vaccinated animals, selected farms and villages are targeted for post vaccination study. Group1 : 100 200 cattle is in a confined farms, less or no movement in and out the farms, individually identified, no FMD vaccination within one year Group 2: 300 beef cattle, 100 from each selected village
Group 1: Dairy Farm
Group 2: Beef Cattle
Activities 2: Post-vaccination Serum Collections: 3 times. studies 1st and 2nd rounds 1 month apart, while the 3rd round is at least 2 weeks from the 2 nd vaccination Laboratory analysis Group1 will be analyzed for FMD antibody in NIAH, Japan Group 2 will be analyzed for antibody titer by LPB ELISA (Pirbright, UK) by FMD Laboratory Center in Yangon.
Expected Outputs: Vaccination Vaccination To prevent FMD in the selected model site To reduce the infection in the areas To raise public awareness of livestock farmers and breeders Post Vaccination Studies
Study 1 Expected Outputs: Post Vaccination Studies To evaluate efficacy of vaccine To differentiate antibody by vaccination from that of infection Study 2 To evaluate vaccine efficiency in field trial To demonstrate protective level after vaccination To compare efficiency of vaccine in different studied groups
