I d like to take this time to let everyone know how honored and excited I am to be president of our organization, and I would like to welcome our Board and Advisory Board members: President - Joe Anteau President-Elect - Jennifer Zimmer Secretary - Angela Jones Treasurer - Chris Bloodworth Director - Randy Dykhuis Past President - Breezy Silver Archivist - Open Career Guidance - University of Michigan - Sara Samuel Career Guidance - Wayne State - Jim Van Loon Diversity Chair - Jane Potee Employment - Open Hospitality - Laurie Allen Membership - Leanna Simon Newsletter Editor - Bryce Rudder Public Relations - Christine Flott Vendor Relations - Alicia Biggers Webmaster - Joel Seewald to everyone for volunteering! If any other members are interested in volunteering, let me know. We do look for volunteers during the year and we have other roles that need to be filled. If you are interested in any of the positions above you could also consider volunteering for next year. Next I want to let everyone know where we are at: at our annual Holiday Party/Silent Auction we raised $816 to send a student to San Diego for this year s Annual Conference. The $816 is just short of last year s total but still one of the highest we ve ever had. We had many great items up for auction and several generous members! This past February I was able to attend the SLA Leadership Summit in Dallas, TX. It was a lot of fun and I was able to find some time to go running out doors which I hadn t been able to do for a few months. I was able to pick up on a few things like how well our chapter is doing. We are doing very well member wise and are a financially healthy group compared to other chapters and divisions. You can see handouts from the Summit here: http://www.sla.org/ contentresources/leadcenter/leadershipsummit/13leadsummit/slides.cfm.
Page 2 SLA One of the BIG announcements from the Summit was the launching of a new SLA website. This new website promises to be more user friendly. The original launch date was planned for the end of February but has since been pushed back, hopefully it will be up and running by the time this newsletter is published. Check it out if you have not already done so. Also, SLA is having a membership drive contest. Whoever in SLA can recruit the most new members or get old members to rejoin will get the chance to have lunch with our SLA President Deb Hunt on the beach in San Diego at the Annual Conference. You can read more about it here http://slablogger.typepad.com/sla_blog/2013/02/slas-get-on-the-beachrecruitment-campaign.html. I also want to remind everyone that registration is now open for this year s Annual Conference in beautiful San Diego, CA June 9-11 th. Early Bird registration ends April 11 th so if you plan on attending and haven t registered yet I strongly encourage you to do so soon. Questions? Comments? Let me know. My email address is president@michigan.sla.org. Otherwise, I hope we all have a great 2013. President-Elect/Programming Report The Programming Committee kicked off the new year by surveying the membership to get input for program ideas for 2013. The best time is evening (75%) with afternoon second (47.5%) Requests for types of programming include: - New technology and its uses in special libraries - Data mining, patent research, investigative research, big data for information professionals, panel on careers, SLA President, copyright basics, digital asset management and preservation, career options all stages, changing nature of the information industry. - Networking, in-person, and social events Several of the requested topics also appeared on the brainstorming list the committee has put together, so it is good to see we are on the right track with our thinking. Now that we have a better idea of what the membership is looking for, we can start planning the rest of the year. For our first event, we are planning a Diversity Potluck in mid-april to be hosted by Mango Languages at their headquarters in Farmington Hills. This will be a networking and social event for the members to get to know each other and share a bit about themselves through food and conversation. Watch your e-mail for an e-vite with more details. I am looking forward to a productive program year with several opportunities for members to get together in person for both learning and networking. If you know of a great speaker in one of these areas listed above, or are a bit of an expert yourself and would like to share your expertise with the membership, please let the Programming Committee know by sending an email to jamm@umich.edu.
