What is Sleep Deprivation? Sleep deprivation is the study of the effects of sleep loss. Sleep deprivation causes serious problems. It often is cited as a primary or secondary cause of industrial and motor vehicle accidents. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that in 2013 drowsy driving was responsible for 72,000 crashes, 44,000 injuries and 800 deaths.
