Background The World Master Chefs Society evolved from the International Academy of Chefs founded in 1947 by Jean Conil, Marius Dutrey, Adolf Cadier, Cyprien Jurien, B. Callderoni and Len Howe. The membership dispersed into other organisations over the years, but some of the old faithfuls supported the Gourmet Club known as Cercle Epicurien Mondial. This, in turn, developed into the Society as the sole organisation involving both the Epicures and the Culinarians operating now as the World Master Chefs Society. Under this title it united all previous organisations under the authority of its present elected International Management Committee. Recognition of the World Master Chefs Society is rooted in its eminent founders, patrons and life voting members who hold the grade of Fellow and use the letters FWMCS after their names as the recognised symbol of their status in the profession. The collective expertise of its highly qualified Officers and Fellows also guarantees its prestige and right to be accepted as an authority by the hotel and catering industry and also by the technical colleges and universities of catering with whom the Society has close links as a further verification of membership standards. Membership recruitment is strictly controlled and each chef member will have had his application endorsed by the management of the establishment of which he is an employee. Qualifications of the highest standard are required for members of our Society and these include the Master Chefs City and Guilds Certificate 706/4 for membership in the United Kingdom and, for foreign applicants, certificates of a similar high standard have to be obtained.
The World Master Chefs Society has been recognised by the presidents of other culinary and catering organisations of many countries and it is they who have contributed to the two books published with their co-operation and have since joined the Society as our overseas representatives. The finest cookery books in the trade have been produced by a large section of our eminent members; our chefs have received favourable media coverage in connection with their activities for the Society. The late Jean Conil, Founder and past President of WMCS, was well known for his more than 100 publications and his achievement of a six-year column in the Times newspaper, as well as his television, radio and live lectures to large audiences. Jean is widely respected for his work for the profession going back to his nomination as correspondent in Paris, 1951 of the Academe Culinaire de France. Throughout his working life Jean was re-elected repeatedly by the majority membership of various organisations to which he gave his time and effort so generously. His work for children s charities won Jean the distinguished patronage and the esteem of his friends and colleagues who assisted him in establishing the World Master Chefs Society as one of the most representative organisations in the culinary world. The best assurance of the Society s recognition rests on the maintenance of its high standards, regulations and leadership. This is why our membership remains based strictly on high qualifications, career achievements and managerial recommendation, and never on self-promotion. The Society s involvement in competitions at national and international level, festival promotions, demonstrations, exhibitions and modern training will ensure it maintains its reputation and popularity.
