Buffalo Athletic Training The Athletic Training Staff at Haltom High School consists of co-head and student athletic trainers. Working with team physicians, our goal is to provide quality medical care of the student athletes at Haltom High School. Each member of the Athletic Training Staff will work to provide leadership, advice and service necessary to prevent injury, care for the injured, and rehabilitation and recondition the injured athletes. Student Athletic Trainers are students who are interested in helping the Haltom athletic teams by learning skills in first aid and athletic training. Athletic training starts in August and runs through June. Student athletic trainers are expected to be available Monday through Friday and the occasional Saturday and holiday. As a student athletic trainer, there is the privilege of earning varsity letters and awards similar to what the various sport teams receive. They have the opportunity to observe surgery, visit other athletic training rooms, and attend different student athletic training workshops. Student athletic trainers must work under the direction and supervision of certified athletic trainers, Tom McLean and Lucy McLean; they may also work under the supervision of team doctor and coaches. It is the sports medicine staff's intention that the experiences of each student athletic trainer are enjoyable and educational. Qualifying to be a Student Athletic Trainer 1. Student must be passing all classes for at least 5 of 6 six week grading periods. 2. Student must have at least an 80 for all classes averaged together. 3. Student must complete the application and be enrolled in at least sports medicine 1 4. Student must be willing do more than just the bare minimum. 5. Student must conduct them self in a mature, respectful manner at all times. The Sports Medicine Program Progression Year 1: Sports Medicine I (SMI). This class will be during the school day. You will be expected to excel in this class and complete additional hours of practice and game coverage afterschool. Year 2:Sports Medicine II (SMII). This class will be held during an athletic period. You must have completed SMI to be in the SMII class. Year 3: Sports Medicine III (SMIII). SMIII will be held during an athletic period. It will also allow for an opportunity to visit additional locations where sports medicine is practiced. Athletic Training Class. Depending on driving abilities at this time a student can also take Athletic Training Class which will be during an athletic period. The student will continue to progress their skills as an athletic training student but will not go to the offsite clinical locations. Year 4: Athletic Training Class. IF the student has taken all 3 sports medicine classes they can take Athletic Training Class which will be during an athletic period. The student will continue to progress their skills as an athletic training student during this time. Sports Medicine III (SMIII). SMIII will be held during an athletic period. It will also allow for an opportunity to visit additional locations where sports medicine is practiced. Note: If you are a student athlete and wish to become a student athletic trainer, you may do so. Guidelines on attendance can be discussed between the certified athletic trainers and the student on an individual basis.

General Duties of all Student Athletic Trainers 1) The student athletic trainer's first duty is to his/her academic studies. The students may be excused from training room duties to pursue academic responsibilities when personally excused by the supervising athletic trainer. 2) The student athletic trainer is expected to attend all team games assigned unless excused by the supervising athletic trainer. Non football you are responsible for finding out bus times. 3) The student athletic trainer will conduct herself/himself as a lady or gentleman at all times. Respect is to be shown to coaches, teachers, administrators, and other students. 4) The student trainer will not talk to anyone outside of the training room about a particular athlete's condition. All matters discussed in the training room should stay in the training room. 5) The student athletic trainer is expected to arrive in the training room before practices and games to prepare the necessary equipment and tape the athletes. When practicing directly after school, the student athletic trainer is to arrive in the training room no later than 10 minutes after school is dismissed. When an athletic contest is not directly after school, the student athletic trainer is to be in the training room 1 hour before the beginning of the event unless that time is changed by the supervising athletic trainer. 6) During practice, the student athletic trainer is to stand and watch practice. There should never be a group of students together socializing and not watching practice. The student athletic trainer should constantly be aware of the potential for injury to athletes. 7) The student athletic trainer is expected to stay with the team until the event is completed, assist with the treatments before and after the event, participate in the evaluation of any new injury, and help clean the training room. The student athletic trainer is encouraged to ask questions about injuries at appropriate times. 8) The student athletic trainer will assist the supervising athletic trainer by preparing equipment for use when asked. 9) The student athletic trainer will be responsible for cleaning and storing equipment used during practices and games. 10) The student athletic trainer will work to learn new taping techniques, treatment techniques, and general first aid. 11) The student athletic trainer must be sure that athletes are signing into the training room properly. In some cases student athletic trainers must sign athletes in properly. 12) The student athletic trainer will be subject to the Code of Conduct rules and punishments as stated in the Haltom High School Buffalo Student/Parent Athletic Handbook and Honor Code.

Student Athletic Trainer Handbook GOALS AND OBJECTIVES Athletic Training at Haltom High School consists of a considerable responsibility that requires hard work, self-discipline, and a commitment to the program. The rewards are generally personal satisfaction rather than public recognition. As athletic trainers, it is our duty to give the highest level of athletic and sports medicine care to the high school athlete. This includes the prevention, care, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. As a student athletic trainer at Haltom High School, you will be required to do the task assigned to the best of your ability. At times you will be responsible for an entire athletic team. You must always follow the directions and teachings of the certified athletic trainers. Only apply procedures that have been approved by the physician, or athletic trainers. Only make statements about athletes to authorized personnel. Be prepared for anything at anytime. This means listen and understand what the athletic trainers are teaching so that you will use the proper method the next time. Athletic training is not a two-semester class. At the instant you walk into the training room asking, "How can I be an athletic trainer?" you are actually saying, "I would like to dedicate myself, for the rest of my time here at Haltom High School, to the prevention, care, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries." There are no set times that you begin or end the day here, only one set of values. These values are to provide the best possible level of athletic and sports medicine care to the athlete. VARSITY LETTERING POLICY 1) A student trainer letter winner candidate will have worked 90% of all Varsity events in the sport being considered (i.e. 9 games in a 10 game season, 27 games in a 30 game season, etc.) 2) The student trainer letter winner candidate will maintain academic eligibility according to the UIL guidelines for participation during the entire length of the sport being considered 3) The student trainer letter winner candidate will not have more than 6 absences during the playing season of the sport being considered. Special circumstances will be reviewed and considered for exception (examples i.e. long term illness, surgery, family emergency) 4) Multiple letters may be earned during the course of an academic calendar year with the same criteria being applicable. DISMISSAL POLICY It is the policy of the Haltom High School Athletic Training program that all student athletic trainers will follow the rules of the athletic training program, athletics, and the school. We will enforce the BISD Honor Code. Dismissal from the athletic training program is not limited to specific violations listed above, and is at the discretion of the athletic trainers. A student that is dismissed from the athletic training program who is also enrolled in the sports medicine program will continue to participate in class but will no longer work with extracurricular activities. PERSONAL APPEARANCE, DRESS, AND CONDUCT

POLICY: Trainers will always observe good practices of personal hygiene and appearance. They will always convey an air of confidence in their every day habits, selection of clothes, and personal appearance. PROCEDURES: I. Personal appearance: II. Dress: A. There will be no undesirable or attention causing hair styles. B. Cleanliness and personal hygiene will be common practice. A. All school dress codes apply while working in the training room, practices, games, or during any other athletic event. This includes face piercings. B. Clothes will be clean and in good repair C. There will be no open toe shoes worn during working hours for practices, games, tournaments, etc that are outside. Functional dressy open toe shoes are allowed during indoor games as long as you can perform your duties. D. Student athletic trainers will wear designated game clothes decided by certified athletic trainers. This will differ by sport. III. Conduct - General Conduct for Trainers A. Observe rules as they are set by the certified athletic trainers B. Never conduct yourself in any manner that would reflect adversely on your moral character or that of the athletic training program. 1. Respect all persons within your organization, school, and program. 2. Assist certified athletic trainers with whatever is asked of you. 3. Be on time and where you are assigned. C. Student athletic trainers will sit at the front of the bus for ALL travel. D. Student trainer will NOT: 1. Talk to the press, radio, TV, or any outsiders about athletes, injuries, policies, or procedures of the athletics department, unless authorized by the certified athletic trainers. 2. Make a diagnosis, recommend or give treatment, medication, or reconditioning programs without consultation with the certified athletic trainers 3. Discuss in detail the seriousness, options, operations, or any phase of reconditioning with the athlete without consultation with the certified athletic trainers 4. Declare any player "unable for participation" without consultation with certified athletic trainers.

5. Make any statements that could be considered as a policy of the Haltom Athletic Department. E. Student athletic trainers will build positive relationships with all coaches. 1. It is the responsibility of the student athletic trainer to communicate with the coach of their assigned sport for scheduling issues, practice times, game/trip departure times, etc. Also communicate these changes with certified athletic trainers. 2. Never discuss injury saturations with the coaches. Status updates on athlete's will come directly from the certified athletic trainers. 3. If there is an issue with a coach report it to the certified athletic trainers immediately. They will help assist in finding a solution. POLICY: CLASSES AND WORK SCHEDULE RESPONSIBILITIES Each trainer will spend as many hours in the training room as it is necessary to ensure complete care of athletes, maintenance of the equipment, and cleanliness of facility. PROCEDURE: I. Academics A. Each student is expected to pass all academic course work. B. In the unfortunate event of a student failing a class: 1. Any student who fails a class will be suspended from game participation for three weeks. The student must pass all classes at a three weeks progress period to become reinstated for game participation. If the student is not passing at the three week period, that student will continue to be suspended for game participation. 2. The student is expected to attend tutorials as scheduled by the teacher of that subject until a passing grade in all subjects is reflected on an official progress report 3. Students are still expected to work all practices as scheduled C. Failing two or more six week grading periods is grounds for dismissal. II. Class and work schedules A. Each Student is given two copies of their sport s schedule (parent copy & student copy). If there is any conflict in the work schedule, students are expected to find their own replacement and approve the schedule change with the athletic trainers. Only emergencies will be excused otherwise. Each student will submit a list of days they need off as soon as possible.

B. Special cases in schedules should be discussed with the certified athletic trainers. C. Student athletic trainers are expected to work home games during holiday breaks. Traveling for away games is at your discretion and arrangements need to be made with the head coach. If you arrange to go to an away game and do not show up it will be seen as a missed game. D. If a student trainer will miss a day of class for an athletic event, they are responsible for their own missed work. 1. Each student will find out before they leave what work they are going to miss 2. If the student will miss a test or quiz, they will try to make arrangements to take quiz or test before they leave. STUDENT ATHLETIC TRAINER DUTIES AND ATHLETIC COVERAGE POLICY: The Athletic Training Staff will provide medical coverage to all sports sanctioned by the Haltom Athletic Department. The Athletic Training Staff will not provide medical coverage to Club Sports, Physical Education Classes, any student not in athletics, or athletes injured at home. I. Athletic Training Room A. Arrive after school and be sure the following are in order: 1. Sufficient tapes of all sizes are available and ready for use. 2. All Containers are full and ready for use. 3. Medical kits are full and ready to be taken to the field. Use checklist if necessary. 4. Prepare ice and water coolers to be taken to the field. 5. Hydrocollator unit has sufficient water. 6. All clean laundry is folded in its proper place. B. Pre-practice care of athletes: 1. Apply only the wraps, dressings, bandages, protective pads, and taping you are qualified to apply. 2. Do not permit crowding at tables. Take each athlete in their proper order. If crowd becomes too large, ask some to wait in the line outside the door. 3. Be sure the injury treatment record is filled in or needed for any care given. C. Conduct in the athletic training room during practice:

1. Put the room in order after the last athlete has left. Clean tables and restock supplies. 2. Provide treatments only when directed by head athletic trainer. You should be supervised under the direction of the certified athletic trainer to supply ice massages, moist heat packs, whirlpools, ice packs, contrast baths, and other modalities. 3. If there are no athletes to treat, use this time wisely. Be practicing procedures on each other or reading related material. You may study your class work once training room duties are completed. 4. Be prepared to care for any athlete who is brought in for first aid. II. Practices A. Practice conduct: 1. Take practice supplies to the field before practice begins. Injuries can occur in the first minute of practice. 2. Station yourself and your equipment so you are near the action and can be easily spotted, if needed. 3. Do not turn your back to the practice area to talk. Keep alert at all times. 4. Assist in water breaks. 5. Care for injured players and escort them to the athletic training room if necessary. B. Post practice training room conducts: 1. Be sure all injured athletes are cared for before leaving. 2. Make a list of supplies needed for the next day, which are out of stock. 3. Clean tables. Generally, put the room in order before you leave. 4. Be sure all dirty wraps and towels are in the laundry bin. III. Contests A. Pre contest conduct (home) 1. Dress appropriately. (Wear what the coaches wear) 2. Help with the pregame taping at the appointed time. Be dressed and ready to work on time. 3. Go over pregame checklist. Be sure all necessary items are on the field well before the start of the game.

B. Pre contest conduct (away-you will have the opportunity to travel with teams): 1. Be on time and dressed appropriately. 2. Be sure to complete the away game checklist before leaving. 3. Ride with the players. You are a part of the team. Sit at the front of the bus. 4. Find the home athletic trainer, introduce yourself as the high school student athletic trainer, and that you are able to help with any injuries that may occur to your athletes. C. Contest conduct (home or away) 1. During the game, stay close to your equipment. Pay close attention to what is going on. Never turn your back to the field or court. This is also for your safety (especially at football games). 2. Stand ready to bring needed equipment onto the field. 3. Always carry scissors, gauze, gloves, and tape in your pocket (or fanny pack). 4. Be prepared to assist the head athletic trainer or coaches with caring for injuries. 5. Assist with giving water to those on the bench during the game. 6. During halftime, assist with water needs. D. Post game conduct: 1. Be sure all equipment is returned to the athletic training room. 2. Assist players in removing tape, dressings, wraps, and bandages. 3. Put the room in order before you leave.
