Listener Question

Ask Terry Dear Terry: Recently I have been having problems sleeping. I just moved and started a new job and I think stress is the problem. I fall asleep ok, but then I wake up in the middle of the night and can t get back to sleep. I know there are a lot of options for sleep products out there. Which one do you think is best? Thanks. Dry Eye Solution (4 slides)

The Anatomy of a Tear Tears are not just salt and water Tears have three layers Inner layer made of mucins a gel-forming protein Middle layer containing proteins, water and electrolytes Outer layer made of fats (lipids) Tears spread across the surface of the eyes to carry nutrients to the cornea protect the eye from damage and infection keep vision clear Tears are produced by special glands in and around the eyelid

Dry Eye Stinging, Burning and Scratching Two main reasons for dry eyes Not enough tears Poor quality tears that evaporate too quickly or do not spread evenly (not enough water in them, or not enough lipids in the outer layer of the tears) Two lesser known risk factors for dry eye Hormone use: women using estrogen replacement had a 69% increased risk of dry eye according to the Women s Health Initiative Study Electronic screens: 90% of people who spend more than 3 hours a day looking at a computer screen have problems including dry eyes and vision changes Normal blink rate is 5-8 times per minute; staring at a smartphone or tablet drops blink rate to 2 times per minute, and eyes dry out

Restore Moisture to Your Eyes A unique Sea Buckthorn Oil (SBA24) has been shown to Reduce inflammation in the eyes Increase moisture content of tears In a clinical study of 100 people with dry eyes, 4 capsules daily of SBA24 significantly relieved dry eye symptoms, including redness and burning Separate study on women with Sjorgen s syndrome (disease causing dry mucous membranes, including dry mouth and dry eyes) SBA24 significantly improved moisture and decreased dry mouth and eyes

Sea Buckthorn Oil: the best choice for dry eyes and more Sea Buckthorn is excellent for more than dry eyes Use for any condition involving dry mucous membranes and inflammation Dry skin and wrinkles Dry mouth and Sjogren s syndrome Peptic ulcer (heals the lining of the stomach) Prevention of heart disease Dosage: 500 to 2,000 mg (1 to 4 capsules) daily

Probiotics for Gout (1 slide)

Treating gout with probiotics Gout = painful form of arthritis warmth, pain, swelling, and extreme tenderness in a joint (usually a big toe) Increased uric acid levels and crystal formation number of gout cases has increased 44% in the last 20 years New research on probiotics and gout Probiotics can break down uric acid so that it doesn t form crystals In an animal model of gout, Lactobacillus plantarum reduced uric acid levels by almost 50% versus untreated animals Lactobacillus plantarum is also very stable and resistant to stomach acid

Telomeres (3 slides)

Telomeres Telomeres are the cap at the end of chromosomes that keep strands of DNA from being damaged Every time a cell divides, the telomeres get shorter When telomeres get too short, the cell can no longer divide so it dies The shortening of telomeres is associated with aging, cancer, and increased risk of death

How long are YOUR telomeres? New company in California has developed a test to measure the average length of your telomeres www.teloyears.com; blood test (send in a drop of blood); cost is $89 and the order must be sent in by a physician Like a check engine light in your car, short telomeres can t diagnose a specific disease, but can be an early signal that a tune-up is necessary

How to Make Your Telomeres Longer A 2013 clinical trial followed 35 men with low risk prostate cancer for 5 years 10 of the men who followed a program of diet, exercise, stress management and social support - lengthened their telomeres by 10% versus the 25 men who didn t make lifestyle changes The Nurse s Health study found that high vitamin D levels were significantly associated with longer telomeres EGCG a compound from green tea prevented telomere shortening associated with heart disease (animal model) In an animal model of Alzheimer s disease, curcumin and grape seed both doubled telomere length versus untreated animals

Spicy Foods for a Longer Life (1 slide)

Spice up your life with Chili peppers Researchers in China analyzed data from half a million people who had completed a detailed health questionnaire, including reporting their consumption of spicy foods and chili peppers Seven years later, the researchers followed up with the same group of people Results: versus not eating spicy foods, Spicy foods once or twice a week reduced risk of death by 10% Spicy foods 3-7 times a week reduced risk of death by 14% Eating foods with lots of chili peppers was also linked to lower risk of death from cancer, heart disease and respiratory diseases Why? Perhaps because peppers are a source of capsaicin, which has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties

3 Easy Ways to Increase Bone Density (3 slides)

1. Jump up and down Men aged 65 and older who hopped up and down for 2 minutes a day for one year saw up to a 12% increase in bone density Postmenopausal women who jumped 10 times a day, twice a day, for 4 months increased hip bone density by.5% - which doesn t seem like a lot until you learn the control group LOST 1.3% bone density in the same time period

2. Silica Silica increases calcium absorption and retention in bones by over 50% Stronger bones less risk of fractures, faster recovery after a fracture Increases collagen formation by over 50% Builds the framework for strong bones Collagen is also used to form hair, skin and fingernails 20 mg daily for basic support, 40 to 80 mg daily if you have osteoporosis or are healing from a bone fracture

3. Vitamin D Like silica, vitamin D controls how the body absorbs and retains calcium People deficient in vitamin D only absorb 10-15% of their dietary calcium and 50% of their phosphorus both important minerals for bone density Vitamin D deficiency increases risk of bone fracture AND premature bone aging (brittle, fragile bones) by 30% A recent study found that 50% of people with stress fractures were deficient in vitamin D Most experts suggest 5,000 IU of vitamin D daily as Vitamin D3

Berries in the News (1 slide)

Two new studies on the benefits of berries Study 1: Berries reduce inflammation associated with heart disease Researchers gave 146 people a placebo or 320 mg of anthocyanins from blueberries and black currants for 24 weeks Results: berry group saw up to a 12% decrease in inflammation versus up to a 12% increase in the placebo group Study 2: Blueberries reduce blood glucose levels and increase insulin sensitivity Researchers analyzed the results of 21 animal studies and 8 human clinical trials on blueberries for glucose control Results: anthocyanins from blueberries reduced serum glucose levels, and blueberry extract was more effective than blueberry juice
