DENTAL IMPLANTS BRING QUALITY BACK TO LIFE Improved Appearance: When teeth are missing an ongoing shrinkage of the jawbone occurs making the face look older. Dental implants can slow or stop this process. What are the Benefits of Dental Implant Therapy? Eliminates the pain and discomfort of full removable or partial dentures. Implant supported replacement teeth are like natural teeth because they are anchored securely to jawbone. With ill fitting dentures, the teeth slip and slide around the mouth. This often results in mumbling, slurred speech or clicking noises. Replacement teeth allow to speak with confidence in a relaxed and natural tone. Who is a candidate for dental implants? Adequate bone in jaw is needed to support the implant(s) along with healthy gum tissues that are free of periodontal disease. That too is done after a careful evaluation of your dental and medical health history.

OPTIONS FOR ALL TEETH MISSING: OPTION 1: Snap-On Denture (Semi Fixed Type 1) It can be done with as few as two implants. This is an entry-level treatment which can later be upgraded to a higher level at later time also. Since the cost is usually directly related to the number of implants placed, this is the least costly option. It is an excellent upgrade from a completely removable full denture because it is stable and provides very good function. This is a model of a snap-on denture. With only two dental implants, it is the most economical choice. It relies on some tissue support, so there is a possibility of tissue irritation. But it is firmly anchored and will not float or shift in the mouth. The piezoelectric effect of the two implants will prevent bone atrophy around those implants. To prevent bone atrophy in the entire jaw, you need to upgrade to more dental implants.
OPTIONS FOR ALL TEETH MISSING OPTION 2: Removable Bridge (Semi fixed Type 2) This is an upgrade from the "snap-on denture. With this option, four to six implants are placed in each arch, with a bar connecting them, and the teeth are fastened to the bar. If your case involves replacing upper teeth, you will like the fact that there will be no need, with a removable bridge, for a plate covering the palate, as there would be with a snap-on denture. This feature will add greatly to your enjoyment of food and will make speaking much easier. Here is a model of a removable bridge. There are six implants, connected by a bar, and the removable bridge is attached to the bar. The bridge is entirely implant supported, so there will be no tissue irritation. Additionally, it is stable and secure in the mouth, and the multiple dental implants will prevent bone atrophy and facial collapse.
OPTIONS FOR ALL TEETH MISSING OPTION 3: Fixed Implant Hybrids (Fixed Type 1) These are another choice, and are an upgrade from a removable bridge. A hybrid replaces teeth and also missing gum and bone tissue. Fixed hybrids have eight to ten implants, and removable hybrids have fewer. This is a model of a fixed hybrid. On the left you can see the implants. On the right is the way it would look in place. In this illustration, there are eight implants. There is no flange, no tissue irritation, and it is very comfortable. And with eight implants there is excellent protection against bone atrophy and facial collapse.
OPTIONS FOR ALL TEETH / FEW TEETH MISSING OPTION 4: Fixed Implant Bridges (Fixed Type 2) If there is enough bone and tissue, you can have individual teeth and fixed bridges attached to individual implants. This is the highest level of quality, comfort, and function, because it is very close to having your own teeth back. The new fixed-retrievable implant-borne bridge is an exciting new option that has the comfort and solid feel of your own teeth, but yet has the convenience of being removable by the dentist for maintenance. Facial Collapse After the teeth are all extracted, the jaws begin to shrink. The body now considers the bone in the jaws to be useless, and it takes those minerals for use elsewhere. Over a period of ten or twenty years, you will end up with a condition called Facial Collapse. Here are a series of models of the lower jaw, showing the progression of bone loss that will occur over the years. The top model shows all the teeth present. Each succeeding model shows more and more bone loss. Many patients who have had no teeth for maybe twenty years have a jawbone that looks like the lowest model, and find themselves totally uncomfortable and unable to function, because there is no bone left to support a conventional denture.. Many of you who are reading this will live well into your 80s or beyond. Do you want to be able to eat normally at that age? Or do you want to be like many of those at that age who keep their teeth in a drawer, who are limited to soft foods, and who have gastric or other health problems because of that? Do you want your long-term quality of life issues to be decided by an insurance company whose primary concern is cutting costs? We will help you no matter how you decide these issues, but we have seen too much misery not to want to bring these long-term consequences to your attention. If you are presently in a situation where you have little or no bone left, we can still help you. Comfort and function can be restored with implant surgery. Restore your lost smile and confidence with dental implants.
Dental Implants and The Piezoelectric effect When teeth or dental implants are present in the jaw, a stimulus is sent to the bone that keeps it from dissolving away. This is called the piezoelectric effect, and it is one of the most important reasons for restoring missing teeth with dental implants rather than some other method. It is especially important with people who are missing all their teeth, because they will eventually suffer facial collapse if implants are not placed. If you're missing all your teeth, placing eight dental implants in each jaw is enough to preserve your bone nicely. If that doesn't fit your budget, then the more dental implants you can have placed, the better. The x-ray below illustrates this effect dramatically. The patient here, a 68- year-old female, has no teeth left. Fifteen years ago, dental implants were placed in her lower front. Now, after fifteen years, there is practically no bone left in her upper arch, or in most of her lower arch. But there is a lot of bone present in the lower front, where implants have kept the bone stimulated and kept it from atrophy. Where the implants are located the bone atrophy has been prevented. She would have been best off to have had four more implants in her lower posterior and then eight also in her upper jaw and the facial collapse and bone loss could have been prevented. Besides she could have enjoyed good function and cosmetics.
