Demystifying the Cell Biology of Cancer Saturday, September 25, 2010 8:00 AM 12:00 noon Presented by: Linda Workman, PhD, RN, FAAN The Christ Hospital; A Level; Classroom 4 2139 Auburn Avenue; Cincinnati, Ohio 45219
Are you interested in broadening your knowledge base of cell biology of cancer, including: Membrane receptors? Signal transduction pathways? Genetic factors influencing malignant transformation? Targeted therapies for cancer therapy?? Then this course is for you!! FACULTY: Linda Workman, PhD, RN, FAAN, graduated from the University of Cincinnati with her BSN and MSN in Nursing, and with her PhD in Developmental Biology. She completed her postdoctoral work in Cancer Genetics at Children s Hospital Medical Center. During the last 30 years, Linda has honed her ability to effectively teach complex biology-based information to many levels of nursing curriculum. Recently, Linda was the PI for an extensive R25 grant from the National Cancer Institute, and was responsible for developing and implementing a five year program for enhancing genetic knowledge among advanced practice nurses for the Oncology Nursing Society. Linda Workman has published extensively in peer reviewed journals and has written numerous book chapters related to genetics and cancer. Linda has received many awards, including being inducted as a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN, 1992) and receiving the Excellence in Teaching Award (Case Western Reserve University, 1995, 2004, 2005; University of Cincinnati, 2001). She has presented locally, nationally and internationally on the topic of genetics and cancer. COURSE OBJECTIVES: 1. Compare the characteristics and responses of normal cells, early embryonic cells, and transformed cells. 2. Analyze the influences of membrane receptors, signal transduction pathways, and transcription factors in the regulation of cell division. 3. Examine genetic factors influencing malignant transformation, including mutational events in suppressor genes and oncogenes. 4. Differentiate the mechanisms of current and proposed targeted therapies use to disrupt cancer cell division.
