Our Stories: You can only imagine my excitement when I was going to be a grandma for the first time and then again less than a year later. I never expected that my grandsons would have the experiences they had, witnessed the things they did and would suffer such profound consequences for something they never asked for. It wasn t until they were one and two that I found out about the extent of their abuse and neglect. They came to me undernourished, under lived and afraid of everything. I was Grandma and I would fix everything. By the time they were four and five, their mother had completed suicide and their father was in jail. I don t think they had any idea the effect they had on these boys. It all started with a small disagreement and in a very short time ended in broken doors, walls, yelling, cursing and threats. Soon every day was an argument from morning until night. That is if I could even get them to go to sleep. This was about the time I heard about Attachment Disorders. Here I thought I was doing something wrong, I thought they really hated me. Their behavior was based on lack of trust, fear and anger. (But not with me) I started learning how to interact and create an environment where they could feel safe. It wasn t always a bed of roses, but there were some good days. Eventually there have been more good days than bad. My grandsons will soon be graduating high school and we have all done some pretty terrific healing. I can t say it was ever easy, but I never gave up on myself or on them. Today I can honestly say we are attached.
