HIGH SCHOOL NURSING OR HEALTH CARE CAREER SCHOLARSHIPS Scholarships awarded to seniors from Belton High School, Raymore-Peculiar High School and Grandview High School to pursue a nursing or other health-related degree. Nursing student scholarships are renewable for up to 4 years. Scholarships range from $750 to $2,500 each. Awarded $41,000 in scholarships in 2014. FEBRUARY DENTAL SCREENINGS National Children s Dental Health Month Partnership with MO DHSS s Oral Health Preventive Services Program Gather data for the State while providing service to the community Local volunteer dentists, hygienists & dental assistants Medicaid & low-income uninsured referred to CCDC for examination & treatment Nearly 1400 students screened in 2014 included: Belton, Harrisonville & Adrian Head Start & Early Head Start Programs Belton and Raymore-Peculiar School Districts: 3 rd graders Grandview School District: 3 rd & 5 th graders Archie and Sherwood Cass School Districts: 3 rd & 6 th graders Students screened receive: *Oral Health Screening by a DDS or RDH *Oral Hygiene Education/Instructions *Fluoride Varnish Treatment** *Toothbrush & Toothpaste **Parental consent is required for fluoride varnish treatment **A second fluoride varnish application is applied by the school nurse 3 6 months later

WHY ORAL HEALTH? RESEARCH SHOWS Tooth Decay is the #1 most common chronic disease among children (American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry) ~51,000,000 school hours are lost each year because of dental-related illness (National Maternal & Child Oral Health Resource Center) http://www.mchoralhealth.org/pdfs/learningfactsheet.pdf Pew Center on the States reports: Dental care is the single greatest unmet healthcare need 60% of children have decay experience 80% of disease occurs in 20% of children (those from low-income & minority families) 1 in 5 children do not receive dental care each year In Missouri, less than 30% of Medicaid-enrolled children received dental care in 2010
