Pitkin Historical and Community Association Winter Newsletter February 2011 Message from D.C. Higgins, President Dear Members and Friends, Hope you had a good fall and your winter is going well. If you are lucky enough to live in Pitkin year-around, we envy YOU! Last year was a good year for all of us in Pitkin and the Quartz Creek Valley. The Fireman s Day and Parade, the drawing and dance were successful, as was the Pitkin Day celebration, including the potluck dinner, games, run/walk and the fishing contest. Thanks to everyone who helped make all of these things possible. We are working on an application for a grant to restore the original Pitkin Town Hall, which is on the property adjacent to the schoolhouse. There has been discussion regarding the building of a replica of the old Assay office that would be a representation of Pitkin in the 1880 s. Looking back on the years, we have a lot to be proud of: the Town Hall, church and schoolhouse restorations and a new community center and firehouse have been built. We should not forget the upgrading of the Silver Plume and the front porch town meeting. Does Pitkin have great people or WHAT! We have lost a lot of our dear friends over the years and we miss them but new friends have taken up the Pitkin spirit.

Looking forward to an exciting summer and fall in Pitkin and the Quartz Creek Valley. Vice-President for Community Activities Helen Pillow, Gale Richardson, co-chair We know that everyone is looking forward to another great summer in Pitkin. PHCA will again have Movies in the Mountains but there will not be a dinner before the movie as we have done the last two summers. We will have popcorn, candy and cold drinks for sale beginning at 6:30 p.m. before the 7:00 p.m. movie. We will also have our annual Potato Bar and Spaghetti Supper and of course, our two Pancake Breakfasts in June and September. We want to say Thank You to all our volunteers for their help and support in the past. If you would like to volunteer, please contact any board members. Vice-President for Historical Activities Eleanor Roubique I would like to thank all of the volunteers who helped staff the museum during the summer of 2010 and hope they will join us again in 2011. My goal for 2011 is to catalog all of the material in the schoolhouse/museum and put it on a disk for our use in identifying items for insurance purposes and to help our volunteers when we have visitors. I have asked Pat Huff to write a biography on R.R.

Williams, since we have no information on him before his time in Pitkin. My son-in-law, Jeff Bell, completed a DVD for the museum and we used the little television that we purchased for the museum to see the material. My hope is that Jeff will be able to join us again this year as he did last September. Secretary, Karen Blue As with every other summer, we will be busy again during the summer of 2011. Of course, it is always great to spend time in Pitkin, both summer and winter. Everyone should try to make a visit during the winter months; I promise you that you will enjoy the visit. The PHCA board meetings for 2011 will be at 2:00 p.m. at the Newcomb Community Center. Everyone is welcome to attend these meetings; if you have something that you would like to discuss with the board, please let me know and I will put you on the agenda. If you would like to read any of the minutes from previous board meetings, I can supply those at any time. Treasurer, Karen Grinnell The dues for membership to PHCA are $10.00 for an individual, $15.00 for a family or $150.00 for a lifetime membership. Your dues help maintain the Newcomb Community Center, the schoolhouse/museum and help in our support for local activities and our contributions to local student scholarships. You will find a membership/dues form on the last page of this newsletter.

Board Member, Nancy Mitchell My position on the PHCA board is member-at-large in charge of the Melodrama/Theater activities. I have extensive experience in theater work and I am in charge of all aspects of the production of the summer melodrama or play that we produce. I am currently researching plays/melodramas to find the right one for the coming summer s production. Hopefully, I will have enough cast members this year to do a regular melodrama. So, if you are interested in being in the cast or helping in any other way, please let me know. It will be easier to choose the right script if I know how many actors I will have to work with. This year s production will be presented on July 28, 29 and 30. Nancy Mitchell (GrammyM53@aol.com) 719-680-2818, 213 W. Colorado Ave.,Trinidad,CO 81082, P.O.
