Building a Strong Defense for Flu Season Looking for some ways to rev up your immune system so you don t get the cold or flu this year? That s a great idea. When your immune system working well, it can help you avoid illness. But if you let it get run down, you re more likely to get sick. Learn what your body s defenses do and how to strengthen them so you can boost your odds of staying well. What Is the Immune System? Simply put, it s a balanced network of cells and organs that work together to defend you against disease. It stops threats like bacteria or viruses from getting into your body. Think of it as a powerful search and destroy task force that sends immune-cell forces out to hunt down the unwanted intruders and get rid of them. Onset Flu Sudden Cold Gradual Sneezing Flu Occasional Cold Common Fever Flu High (102-104 F) Cold None or Mild (Less than 100) Chest and Headaches Flu Common, More Pain Cold Mild, if Any Muscle Aches Flu Often Severe Cold Slight 1 Duration Flu 6-7 Days Cold 3-4 Days Sore Throat & Cough Flu Early Cold Mild Course, Peaking Day 2-3

How Does your Immune System Work? Your body makes proteins called antibodies that destroy abnormal or foreign cells. They help fend off common ailments like the flu or a cold, and protect you against major illnesses like cancer or heart disease. You also have a backup response known as the cell-mediated immune system. This involves immune system cells rather than antibodies. They help your body create memories of past defenses against certain threats. When your body sees that invader again, it calls up that memory and sets out to destroy the threat before the disease develops. This is what makes vaccines or immunizations work for illnesses like the flu, measles, chicken pox, or hepatitis. The shot has a small but harmless amount of the disease in it so your immune cells can react, learn, and remember how to protect you from it next time. Do Lifestyle Changes Help? Yes. Bad health habits can slow your immune system. That s why doctors urge you to make certain lifestyle changes. 5 things to BOOST your Immune system 1. Stay Hydrated and Follow whole food based eating style 2. Move your body 3. Manage stress 4. Support consistent sleep patterns 5. Customized Nutritional Support from Nutritional Frontiers Types of Flu 1. Type A, B and C Flu VirusesThere are three types of flu viruses: A, B, and C. Type A and B cause the annual influenza epidemics that have up to 20% of the population sniffling, aching, coughing, and running fevers. Type C also causes flu, but the symptoms are much less severe. 2. Bird Flu (H5M1)Should you be concerned about a particularly bad strain of bird flu - H5N1? Public health experts answer common questions about it, including how it s spread, its symptoms, and how to prevent it. 3. H1N1/Swine FluH1N1 flu is also known as swine flu. Like seasonal flu, it can cause more serious health problems for some people. 4. Stomach Flu Sometimes people mistake symptoms of stomach flu, or gastroenteritis, for the viral infection we commonly call flu. But they re not the same. 2

Conventional Treatments Are there signs or symptoms that should cause concern after getting a flu vaccine? According to the CDC, mild side effects from the flu shot include soreness, redness or swelling at the injection site, low-grade fever and aches.... Symptoms of serious side effects include difficulty breathing, swelling around the eyes or lips, hives, racing heart, dizziness and high fever.aug 15, 2017 Antibiotics are medications that fight infections caused by bacteria, but the flu is cause by a virus. Taking antibiotics when you have a virus may do more harm than good. Taking antibiotics when they are not needed increases your risk of getting an infection later that may resist antibiotic treatment. 3 With any vaccine, look for any unusual conditions, such as a high fever, behavior changes, or signs of a severe allergic reaction after vaccination. Signs of a severe allergic reaction can include: Difficulty breathing Hoarseness or wheezing Swelling around the eyes or lips Hives Paleness Weakness A fast heart beat or dizziness Life threatening allergic reactions to the flu shot are rare. These signs would most likely happen within a few minutes to a few hours after the vaccine is given.
