HOBART REAL TENNIS CLUB NEWSLETTER February 2014 SOCIAL NEWS JANUARY 2014 THE CLUB ANNUAL DINNER 14 TH DECEMBER The Club Annual Dinner, with a Black Tie/1920s theme, was held at the Tasmanian Club on Saturday 14 December last. The dinner was fully subscribed with a waiting list, which was a great response from the members. Some of the diners turned up at the tennis club in their finery and black ties to watch the final of the Class 1 Championship between Hilton Booth and Al Ramsay. With drinks in hand, they weren t disappointed with the quality of the tennis, seeing a closely fought match. Then up Jennings Lane to the Tasmanian Club for pre-dinner drinks. Dinner was Fresh Tasmanian Mussels and Bruny Island Oysters or Baked Goats Cheese for Entrée, Longford Rare Roast Beef Fillet or Seared South Australian Blue Fin Tuna and Tasmanian Calamari for Main Course and either Poached Peaches in Ginger and Lime Syrup or Black Forest Ice Cream Cake for dessert. After dinner the dancing music was provided by The Original Cut Outs. There much dancing, the snooker tables were fully occupied, and the stayers, while evicted from the Tasmanian Club at midnight, ambled down to the tennis Club for a quiet last drink. The usual formalities were observed during the course of the dinner including the presentation of trophies to the Club Championship winners present and the Pierre Etchebaster trophy. A special moment was the announcement of the awarding of Club Honorary Life Membership to Bob Horner. Bob did not stand again for the Club Committee, having been the Club Treasurer for 20 years and giving wonderful service to the Club through tight and profitable times. An additional acknowledgement at the dinner was the recording of the names of those Club members who had provided exceptional volunteer services during 2013. The volunteers were: Graeme Bradfield, Hilton Booth, Iain Burrows, Sue Davis, Simon Dwyer, Martine Heilman, Mary McArthur, Stuart McClean, Brian Maxwell, Nikki Millard, David Mitchell, Michelle Moores, Avery Patten, Sally Rackham, Eryl Raymond, Anne Reed, Ian Ritchard, Biz Ritchard And with all names placed in a hat, one volunteer was drawn to receive 10 free games of tennis. The lucky winner was Anne Reed.

THE ROBERT FAHEY PORTRAIT COCKTAIL PARTY It was great to see so many people attend the cocktail party to congratulate Rob on his many achievements and to recognise those achievements through the presentation of his portrait to the Club. (see separate report in the January Club News) It was terrific to see Club Patron Andrew Kemp and his wife Elizabeth at the function, both great supporters of Robert. And it was wonderful to see all of Rob's family in attendance, along with his fiancee Claire Vigrass (the Women's World Champion). Peter Scollard arranged and provided the catering through his Welcome Stranger Hotel, and his apprentice chef who prepared the eats was promising junior tennis player Alexander Colbert. All up, a fantastic evening. Rob Fahey & Claire Vigrass 4
