Liaison Psychiatry Team Information for patients and carers Chelsea and Westminster Hospital

Who are we? The Liaison Psychiatry Team is a team of doctors and nurses who look after the psychological health of patients in Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. Patients are referred to us by staff in the hospital and we see patients on the hospital wards and in the Accident & Emergency Department (A&E). Could we help you? We meet people with many different psychological health problems, such as: Problems with worry, stress, or depression Difficulty coping with a physical health problem Problems with alcohol or drugs Self-harming behaviour, such as taking an overdose Eating disorders, such as anorexia or bulimia nervosa Postnatal depression Psychosis Dementia and delirium

What do we do? When you meet a member of our team for the first time we will ask you about your problems and how they affect you. We will give you time to talk about your difficulties from your point of view. We will discuss with you what help you might need, and what treatments are available. What happens next? Where appropriate we seek advice from other experts in the team to provide the most appropriate treatment package for individual needs. For some people, one meeting with us is enough to help with their problems. Sometimes we see people a number of times for treatment, particularly if you are an inpatient at the hospital. Alternatively, we might refer you to another service that is able to help you. We provide the most appropriate treatment package for individual needs

What should I do if I have a mental health crisis? There are a number of support options available to you if you feel that you are in a crisis. It is always preferable to make an appointment with your GP first, however we understand that this may not be possible in some situations. If you have harmed yourself in any way, you should always go directly to your nearest Accident & Emergency Department or call 999 if you require urgent assistance. If you need help or advice out-of-hours the Single Point of Access offers mental health triage for routine, urgent and emergency referrals, information and advice 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days per year on 0800 0234 650.

What if you want to know more? Some people are worried about meeting us because they don t know what to expect. It isn t always easy to discuss your problems with someone else. If you have any concerns about meeting us, please speak to the nursing or medical staff at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital who will be able to advise you. A telephone call with the team can be arranged before your appointment if you would like more information. More details about the services available to you are available from the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) for Chelsea and Westminster Hospital on 020 3315 6727 or email m-pals@chelwest.nhs.uk
