MIDWEST FOOD PROCESSING INDUSTRY STATISTICS BY STATE WISCONSIN Wisconsin Food Processing Share in Wisconsin Manufacturing, 2016 74.0% 26.0% Manufacturing Food Processing The 2016 Annual Survey of Manufacturers indicates the food processing subsector accounted for 26 percent of the total value of shipments by Wisconsin manufacturers in 2016. This makes food processing the leading manufacturing industry in Wisconsin in terms of value of shipments.

Wisconsin food processors reported over $43.4 billion* in food shipments in 2016. Since 1997, the value of food manufacturing shipments has increased 111.7 percent. The stability of the Wisconsin food manufacturing market is evidenced in the relative growth trend in the value of shipments even during the economically difficult periods. In 2016, dairy manufacturing reported $20.2 billion in industry shipments (46.6 percent of food manufacturing shipments). Following in second place is meat manufacturing with $8.3 billion in industry shipments (19 percent of all food manufacturing shipments).

Other food manufacturing came in third at 64.4 percent followed by fruit and vegetable preserving and specialty food for which industry shipments, which grew 62.9 percent. Placing fifth was bakeries and tortilla manufacturing at 55.2 percent.

In 2016, food manufacturing establishments in Wisconsin employed 64,057 people representing 14.9 percent of the state s manufacturing employment and provided over $3.2 billion in annual payroll.
